Despite their deeply religious values, the members of the Puritan Society in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible are equally as sinful as the rest of the world. The Puritans, known for turning to God when given any matter at hand, lay blame on the Devil, regardless of their contradictory values. By blaming on him for their wrongdoings, the Devil earns power through the Puritans restoring to involve him whenever any one thing goes wrong. Power is defined by one’s reputation, status, wealth, gender, and age; although the natural deciding factor of one’s power in the Puritan society is land, the Devil himself holds ultimate power. Despite the fact that he does not appear as a human figure, he controls the thoughts and actions of the Puritan society, serving as the ultimate threat.
In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, a prominent conflict that ensues is the community versus power seekers. The story takes place at a time when people are living in a very closely knit community based on Puritan principles, and, consequently, prone to intolerance towards opposition or dissent. Not to mention, the whole town is involved, not simply one family whose drama might be representative of the plight of the community. In addition, such a rigid society implies that any form of individuality is considered dangerous. With a society this controlling, community members are more likely to act out and pursue personal interests.
Title Sometimes, it’s hard to see what someone’s intentions are. It may be especially hard to tell if a person in power is truly using their power to do good, or if they’re putting up a front in order to gain personal benefits. In The Crucible, Reverend Parris used his title and influence for personal gain. Things like this don’t just happen in literature. There are people in our world today using their status and influence to gain money or more power.
She threatens the other girls with violence if they refuse to go along with her plans, and she does not hesitate to accuse them of witchcraft if their loyalty proves untrue. Such is the case with Mary Warren. She frightens them enough over her talk of witchcraft and devils in a God fearing town and makes for a scary enemy to have. She tells Betty about her childhood and seeing her parents murdered by Indians. “I saw Indians smash my dear parents' head on the pillow next to mine.
When Mary Warren and Mr. Proctor go to court Mary admits that her and the girls were only pretending to be afflicted my witchery when she confronts the girls with the truth, the girls reject what Mary says and they begin to tell the court that Mary is sending her spirit on them. Mary realizes that the court will not believe her and Mr. Proctor against the girls and she betrays her faith and Mr.Proctor to tell the truth and lies once again with girls and tells the court “My name, he want my name. "I'll murder you," he says, "if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court," he says! (Act 3, Miller)”.

After Betty, last living daughter of Reverend Parris, falls “ill” and panic breaks out as the Girls of Salem are to soon be accused of witchcraft. Once Tituba and Abigail “confess” that people in the town are witches the stage has now been set. Throughout The Crucible three categories of people show their lust for power over the theocracy that rules over Salem.
n the Puritan society, power is often given to people because of the land that one owns, one 's age, one 's race, one ’s religious beliefs, or one’s reputation in the community. In Act I of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is a clear sense of hierarchy in their community. There are few people who pull away and actually gain or lose power regardless of their standing. With the idea that the devil has come into this community, some see this as an opportunity to gain the power that they have been lacking for most of their lives. Even though in the Puritan society, men are much more dominant, Tituba and Abigail Williams are two women who hold great power due to their involvement in the alleged witchcraft.

Power and influence in society have a huge impact on the way things happen and affects perception. A prime example is the power that presidents and prime ministers have.
