The layers of Racism and Prejudice in “To Kill A Mockingbird”
“There is no such thing as race. None. there is just a human race, scientifically and anthropologically” -Toni Morrison. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a novel by Harper Lee, published in 1960. Set in the 1930s in a fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, it is narrated by Scout Finch, who tells the story of her father, Atticus Finch, a lawyer who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. The novel explores themes of racism, prejudice, and justice through Scout's perspective as she learns about the harsh realities of her society. In the classic novel " To Kill a Mockingbird", author Harper Lee uses the characterization of Jem, Lula, and Mayella to demonstrate that it is important not to be racist or prejudiced because doing so can be harmful and destructive.

The trees referred to are on the property of the Radley family, who are viewed as outsiders and feared by many in the town. This fear is based on rumors and stereotypes, rather than actual knowledge or understanding of the Radleys. The Prejudice Community of Maycomb The book “To kill a Mockingbird” is based in a small town in Maycomb, Alabama during the great depression. Some of the main characters are Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell, Atticus Finch, and many more. Tom Robinson is a black male who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell who is Bob Ewell's daughter. Atticus Finch is the lawyer defending Tom and has to put up a battle against the Ewells and the jury to try and defend this man.
The theme of prejudice is a main topic throughout the novel. The novel takes place before the civil rights movement in Maycomb County, Alabama. The story follows Atticus,Scout,Jem, and Dill as they journey through a world of prejudice towards black people. Atticus who is a lawyer is defending Tom Robinson who is accused of rape. The trial seems rigged as Tom is black and the accuser saw that as an opportunity.
Prejudice is preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. According to Oxford Dictionary. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird prejudice is one of the main topics. This is demonstrated in the trial and The kids tresspancence into the Radley yard & Lulas reaction to Calpernia bringing Jem & Scout to the Jim Crow church.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee has many powerful characters that have been greatly affected by the prejudice system back in the 1930s. Tom Robinson, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley are all characters from this novel who have had biased accusations made against them. Tom Robinson, a twenty-five year old black man with a family of his own, was falsely accused of raping nineteen year old Mayella Ewell. Dolphus Raymond is a white man who is married to a black woman and is profoundly judged for his decisions. Boo Radley is a very mysterious character in this book, he has a very parochial outlook on things as he has hardly ever left his home.
Prejudice meaning adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge of the facts, was a huge factor in the novel, '' To Kill A Mockingbird'' by Harper Lee. There were three types of prejudice throughout the book, they are the racism prejudice, gender prejudice and the social classes prejudice. Also prejudice was pretty common thing in the middle 1900's, so be glad you weren't raised then. There are handfuls of examples throughout the book, some of them being very discreet. ''
The Prejudice of Maycomb County Prejudice has plagued the United States of America for decades, and still plays an important role in the lives of everyday people today. Moreover, it can be in the form of racism, sexism, classism, or one of many other countless methods of presumption towards others. Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, chooses to illustrate the prejudice of Maycomb County through the use of characters’ actions and dialogue. Aunt Alexandra may be full of pride, but she is prejudice nonetheless.
Overcoming Prejudice Prejudice is like a nimbostratus cloud. It blocks the light of thinking with an open and impartial mind. However, through experiences someone can overcome prejudice and see the world through a new, benign light. Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird , Jem illustrates prejudice by being biased towards Boo because of her fear of him. In her description of Boo, she describes him as a "6-and-a-half-foot tall man who eats raw squirrels and cats. His hands are blood stained because he eats raw animals. There is a long-jagged scar that runs across his face; his teeth are yellow and rotten; his eyes pop, and he drools most of the time" (Lee.14).
One of the key themes of the novel is the idea of prejudice. Throughout the book, we see how people are judged based on their race or social status, rather than on their character. This is particularly evident in the case of Tom Robinson, who is falsely accused of raping a white woman. Despite the overwhelming evidence in his favor, he is still found guilty because of the color of his skin. This is a powerful reminder of the ways that prejudice can affect people's lives.
In the novel ¨To Kill A Mockingbird, the author belives that people show the evils prejudice. One example from ,To Kill A Mockingbird¨that proves this is when at the beginning of the novel when scout tells us her original thoughts of Boo Radley. The text states¨Boo was about six and a half feet tall judging from his tracks: he dined on raw squirrels and any catshe could catch¨.(Lee, p.13).This supports the theme because the children have a preconecved prejudiced notion about Boo because of the stories they have heard. According to¨Too Kill A Mockingbird¨,after Mr. Gilmor cross examines Tom Robinson, Dill runs our of the court crying because he does not like the way Mr.Gilmor treated Tom.
During the 1930s in Alabama the Great Depression was terrible. There were no jobs, no money, and very little respect for others with different skin colors. In this novel you will find out what the Great Depression has done to a small community that contains groups of blacks and whites. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme of prejudice is shown by the social class, racism, and gender of a small group of people in a small town.
Prejudice is defined as judging someone based on personal bias without really knowing them. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are all kinds of prejudice shown through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. From her perspective, we get an insight into the prejudice she sees and faces. Prejudice has shown itself in many forms, including ageism, sexism, and racism; it has affected the way people view each other and has negatively affected their lives. Ageism is a type of prejudice that happens to both young and old people.
Prejudice is an opinion formed without knowing the facts, by ignoring them. She uses people like the Cunninghams, Ewells, Aunt Alexandra and Tom Robinson to develop her argument. The first part is about when it is the first day of school and the first grade has a new teacher Miss Caroline. Another section is when Aunt Alexandra wants to get rid of Calpurnia for some things she has done and when Tom Robinson is put on trial for an incident that did not happen the way Bob Ewell portrayed it.

In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many kinds of prejudice that change the everyday lives of the people who are affected by it.
Social prejudice is shown throughout Harper Lee’s award winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee powerfully analyses the theme social prejudice, and its effect on people. Such as how the Social prejudice is discrimination based on your status in society. An example of social prejudice would be the Radley family, which consists of Boo Radley, Nathan Radley and Arthur Radley. As they haven’t been out of their house in years people are lead to believe the rumours.
