How could someone be responsible for their own brother’s death? In The Scarlet Ibis the element pride was a destructive force because the older brother had plans and dreams of how he wanted a brother to be. Unfortunately that isn’t how it turned out at all. His brother was born disabled and limited him of the brotherly things he could participate in such as running, fishing and all the fun things brothers do. He was given the nickname Doodle. For being born disabled his older brother went to mean measures to show Doodle how he did not measure up. Doodle’s physical appearance limited him in many ways. He had a tiny body that set major limitations on what he could do. (page 345) “ I had plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” His
My image is, “a feather dropping away.” This image occurs when the family finds the Scarlet Ibis in a tree in their yard. They see a feather fall right before the Ibis fall down to its death. For my drawing I drew a feather dropping from a bird equals Brother running from Doodle. I interpreted this image as negative because a feather dropping shows that the bird is weak and is going to die.
They name him William Armstrong, a name only good on a tombstone, tehy later name him Doodle. Doodle’s brother is ashamed of having a cripple brother and hates him. When he is five year old, Doodle’s brother teachs him to walk. He takes pride in it and thinks he can fix Doodle. He starts loving Doodle after this.
Memorable stories describe characters to where the audience feels what the character must deal with. Often these stories relate to the fellow audience, creating a “bond” and or connection. Most readers can relate to the hardship of one of main characters of the “Scarlet Ibis”, Doodle’s brother, and what he must face. Like most memorable stories, James Hurst, author of the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, uses diction and actions and events Doodle’s brother experiences to characterise him in displaying determination, hope, and loving. One of Doodle’s brother’s qualities is determination.

The theme of the story was Do not let pride overrule love, the narrator really expresses this throughout the story with a lot details. Sure pride may not seem like a bad thing but what about when we have too much?
Pride is Ignorance Disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movement, senses, or activities. " The Scarlet Ibis," a short story written by James Hurst, focuses on the relationship between two brothers: the narrator and his disabled brother, Doodle. Doodle is born when the narrator, Brother, is only six years old. Since the narrator is young and does not know how to cope with a situation like this, he plans to kill Doodle. The prideful narrator wants a brother he can play with and is disappointed and embarrassed that he will not be like a regular boy.
Embarrassment can make us do things that aren't always right. In the end The narrator's embarrassment killed his little brother. Next time you are embarrassed of somebody or something, think of this story and Watch your actions. Before doodle died, the two brothers found a dead scarlet ibis in there yard. The Scarlet ibis was forced with the storm to go where it wasn't supposed to be, The bird represents doodle and the narrator/older brother is the storm, forcing doodle to do something that isn't meant to be.
In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, there are many kind and helpful actions done, but the torturous ones that Doodle’s older brother plans and executes surpass them all. For example, Brother starts to realize his feelings for Doodle soon after he is born and decides “ to kill him by smothering him with a pillow” (175). Not only is this cruel, but it is horrible to think that someone would want to harm a relative in that way. Being so young also means that Doodle would not be able to do anything to defend his life. In addition, the narrator pushes his brother’s physical abilities by making him swim until he appeared blue, row more than his muscles could manage, and walk faster than recommended (180).
Doodles brothers pride brings many positive changes into Doodles life but in the same way it causes Doodles death. Bringing with it a lifetime of guilt and conscious. Ultimately this a story of a very confusing and complex relationship between Brother's. This story lead us to believe that Doodle's brother loved and hated
The direct and indirect characterization of Doodle shows the cruelty and how much the mentally handicapped were neglected in the time of the text in the story “The Scarlet Ibis”. The narrator directly characterized Doodle when he said, “He talked so much that we all quit listening to what he said. ” This is showing they don’t care for Doodle. They don’t realize he needs extra help and treats him like a annoying burden. Once they realized Doodle would always be like this they just ignore him, even if he wasn’t speaking.
The Scarlet Ibis How did Doodle die? Why did Doodle die? Was it his Brother? Doodle was born a disabled kid who was loved by everybody in his family except his brother (The narrator of this story). The narrator wished for a perfect brother that his would be able to do things with but when he wasn’t given that it caused him to do things that no brother should ever do or think about doing to his younger brother.
In a person’s life, many situations transpire and make them feel pride over one’s self. Readers can see this in the short story,” The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. “In his spare time Hurst wrote short stories and plays, but The Scarlet Ibis was the only work of his that become famous “(gradesaver.com)”. In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst uses red to symbolize warning, death, and guilt to show the change the older brother goes through, as he takes care of Doodle. The first instance when red is used, is to express warning and the older brother’s attitude, is at Doodle’s birth.
