In all countries, religions, and cultures people are expected to live a certain way. For instance in puritan times people were expected to wear plain concealing clothing, and were supposed to live their lives by the bible. For example in the book “ The Scarlet Letter” Hester Prynne was shunned from society for committing adultery. In many ways people let society control who they are. In the story The Crucible many people are sentenced to death due to false superstition. The reason for these false superstitions, was a well respected reverends slave tituba merely playing childish games with the reverend's daughter and niece along with some other village girls in the woods. When the girls got caught dancing ( which was considered a sin back then) it was a natural instinct to lie to save themselves from trouble. With the popular superstition of dark entities like witches and demons, what better way to get out of trouble than to accuse the slave that accompanied you as …show more content…
In the story People look at George and Lennie as weird and strange because they looked out for each other. This was uncommon for two men to do during the great depression especially since Lennie was mentally unstable and George had no relation with him. In those times people like lennie were not common and many people looked at him as a freak, but only because they did’nt take the time to get to know him and realize that he was just a little different. Society often misunderstands situations because everyone always jumps to conclusions, for instance in the beginning of the story Lennie reaches out to touch a woman's dress, when she screamed it scared Lennie so by instinct he squeezed. By doing this Lennie also scared the woman, when George got Lennie to let go of the dress the woman ran to town and told everyone he tried to rape her, because of this Lennie and George had to flee the town and search for a new
Do the concepts of good and evil exist? Many people would say yes. In late 17th-century Salem, Massachusetts, these concepts were truly put to the test. In the Puritan culture that was descended from the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620, the people of New England were expected to live a life that was strictly devoted to Biblical dictates and ideals. Unfortunately, the Puritan mindset of the time period evolved in such a way that a belief in the possibility of the devil's interference in people's lives, in evil spirits, witches and warlocks, became a part of everyday life.
The friction between evil and good ultimately ignites every battle, from the minutest of internal conflicts to some of the greatest battles. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, great evil has overtaken the town of Salem, Massachusetts. It is a battle between the sinister Abigail Williams and the innocent people of Salem. Innocent lives are being taken due to the fear that some of the people of Salem supposedly practice witchcraft and have sold their lives to the devil. This fear is augmented because of the fact that the people of this town are Puritans, meaning that their entire lives abide by the Bible.
In today’s society the general attitude towards an individual is conform or be an outcast. It is seen in schools where people who do not fit into specific cliques become outcasts, the weird people. It is seen in the work place as well. People have conformed to standards set by society simply because society has said to do so. Society asks people to change themselves to fit in.
A superstition is a belief based on myths and not facts. In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Puritans are living in Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem Witch Trials. They are avid believers in two different worlds: the natural world and the invisible world. The invisible world consisted of evil creatures that hide in the natural world. They also strongly believe in the idea that God gives signs, good or bad, to express how he feels about them during certain times.
Poor Behavior in “The Crucible” Ever wonder why people dies in The Crucible? The impact of Poor Behavior is exhibited throughout The Crucible. Most of the characters act badly.
Society today is really judgemental. If you don’t wear the right clothes or have the right car then you will get judged. It’s kinda like in the book The Crucible if you weren't a puritan then you were an outcast or you might have been a witch. One of the puritan girls Abigail Williams blamed a lot of women who were called puritans and lived the puritan way. In this case people just judged them without looking into far more research.
Society makes people feel as if they are obligated to be what other people want them to be, and perform what society wants them to. Examples of this dates back to the Salem Witch Trials, where over 200 people were convicted of witchcraft and 20 people were executed. There are recent cases of this happening in our society too, such as the West Memphis three cases. The West Memphis
As Bob Marley once said, “The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” Integrity is the quality of being honest and upholding one’s morals and principles. Living in a fast-paced and ever-changing society, human beings have come into contact with adversity and hardship all throughout history. Those who act with integrity during tough times have a major influence on those around them, and taking a stand and upholding ones’ beliefs and morals at great self sacrifice can inspire and encourage others to do the same. Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible is a prime example of upholding integrity, and the characters within the play face difficult choices between doing
In 1692 hundreds of people were sitting in jail for being witches, but none of them were really witches. An author named Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible based of the true events of the Salem witch trials. In the play some girls get in trouble for dancing in the woods. They claim the witches were making them do these bad things. The girls accused a lot of people and got a lot of people of hang for being witches.
Superstition is a belief, custom, or act based on a collection of beliefs. Superstitions are not based upon facts. They are also based upon random situations rather than to be proven on given evidence. Fear can hinder you from living life to the fullest because you are afraid. The Power of the mind can cause you to accuse regular occurrences on superstition and or fear.
This starts a spree of lying and blaming which causes multiple innocent people to be hanged for being accused of witchcraft. One lie started a moment in history people today call crazy, unacceptable, and unrepeatable. “The Crucible” is a play that explains, through a crazy but remarkable story, why lying is a sin. In the present, lying could occur more frequently that truth is told.
Lennie never raped the girl, however he never got a chance to share his side of the story, because of his disability, and the circumstances of the situation were then assumed. Lennie wanted to pet the girls dress because it was soft. “ “Jus’ wanted to feel that girls dress-jus’ wanted to pet it like a mouse.” ” (10) This example is one of many that lead us to believe that Lennie was
In order to be accepted in the current social society, you must follow a certain set of norms throughout life. Social norms are the unwritten rules on behavior that are expected and established opinions on what is appropriate and what is not. People who do not follow these instilled norms may be casted aside, judged, or suffer a consequence. Society’s expectations have dictated what normal human behavior is that people conform to as a way of life. These norms, however, are not set in stone, so they may be challenged.

Throughout the course of history the Great Depression affected the United States in their economy , it lasted 10 years it was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. Lennie and George had numerous of risks in the ranches, they didn't have no one who would help them if they were sick or anything else. The author show us the good relationship of Lennie and George how they care of each other. This shows that George is a good friend but maybe this is not his decision to take care of him he feels sorry for him, I also seen in this text that Lennie receives benefits of George friendship because he is being responsible for him he takes care of him, even though he is a trouble maker George is there for Lennie.
