There were many political, economic, and social changes that occurred during the years 1820-1860. Some of which include Manifest Destiny, financial panics, and reform movements. These changes had many substantial consequences that influenced the growth of The United States as a country and society. A major political change that occurred during this time period was the expansion of the United States westward in North America. This led to many debates in congress and posed a threat to the continuation of slavery in America. The constitution of 1824 was also a topic of political debates. This constitution gave the president increased power and political roles. Similarly the presidential election of 1828 was the first to have such unrestrained and damaging mudslinging. This election sets the example of what all elections try to avoid to this day. Another political change was the Indian Removal Act. Native Americans were forced from their homes westward at gun point on what is known as “the trail of tears”. This belief that god has given America the right to take all land away from the Natives is a direct result of Manifest Destiny. This caused another problem; as the American citizens …show more content…
The financial panic of 1837 was caused mainly by Andrew Jackson. He opposed the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States. This lead to “the bank war”. Another principle economic change was the Gold Rush. This caused a massive amount of people to travel to California and develop western America. Roads and towns were built throughout San Fransisco, which lead to the development of new methods of transportation such as steamships and steam powered trains. These inventions gave inspiring momentum to the industrial revolution. Economic successes and failures lead to the still prosperous San Fransisco, and the financial stability that banks now
Throughout history many factors have affected the way the country was shaped. In the political sense, however, the major factors would be that of domestic and foreign affairs. During the 1790’s, the nation was going through many drastic changes in order to attempt to make the country a long last success. The most significant changes made thanks the country’s domestic affairs would include the Alien and Sedition Acts, loose vs. strict interpretation acts and the Whiskey Rebellion. Both foreign and domestic affairs helped shape American policies in the 1790’s however, domestic affairs helped the country on a much greater scale.
Between 1877 and 1920, America was reborn economically and industrially, which go hand in hand. The United States owe all of this economic growth as the result of Reconstruction during the post-Civil War era. From the 1880s and on, there was a “rapid expansion of factory production, mining, and railroad construction” (Foner 605). The expansion out west contributed to the expansion because companies were no longer limited to working either in the south or the New England area, and “a working free labor system” (Foner 571) established by the Freedman’s Bureau, an agency created during Reconstruction. Andrew Carnegie was a leader for helping the United States being able to be successful in industrializing the country by creating companies along every step of the way to construct a
The United states changed dramaticily between 1776 and 1870. The popualtion increased rapidly . People were given constituational rights. There was no more slavery and less racial discrimination. The U.S became more of a industrial economy rather then agricultural.
The middle 1800s had many changes for America and Americans. One change was the cotton gin. Another change was the Indian Removal Act. These changes affected many citizens of America.
From 1825-1850 America was a nascent nation beginning to experience an increasing demand for social progression and equal rights. Although Americans continued to discriminate against people of different races, genders and ethnicities, change came about through religious movements and improvements in the realm of children’s education. Therefore, although many people were still oppressed during this time, positive change came about by way of religious revival and reform regarding the treatment of children. In the eyes of the South, these 25 years brought on unnecessary change, most of which was spearheaded by people from the North. Growing abolitionist and gender equality movements, along with immigration posed a potential threat to the power
For instance, in “Panic of 1837” (Campbell), it is explained that because of the money deflation the bank’s “confidence evaporated” as “banking and insurance stocks fell.” As explained in the article, all of the regulations from the government caused banks to lose savings and with that go bankrupt, leading to more than one hundred backs to close. Because of the great amounts of money lost, many other related industries started to decay such as agriculture as food products’ prices rose, causing riots among the population as they demanded more accessible prices to be able to eat enough. As an example, Campbell states that because of the withdrawal of other international banks as they refused to be associated with the American banks caused “plantations to be unable to cultivate their crops.” With the demands from the growing American population for goods but with rising prices, farmers found themselves in debt and with difficulties selling their products.
To say the time period following the Civil War in the United States involved a lot of change would be a understatement. Between the years 1870 and 1900 the people of the United States lived through a period of great change. Not only did they witness technological advances that would change their daily lives, they also saw new laws and organizations formed. All of this was done in hopes of improving the country. Many of these changes came about because of the type of businesses that were formed.
Between the year of 1865 and the year of 1920, the United States moved towards becoming a more industrialized and developing society. With this change taking place, resulted in improvement with how people live with family and earned money differently. The three major aspects of industrialization during the 1865 and 1920 that influenced the politics, economy and society of the United States are: entrepreneurship, technology, as well as transport and communication network. Entrepreneurship: the period after the Civil War from 1865 to 1920 was characterized by fast economic growth in the country.
The culture during the 1860s in the United States of America has changed many times and is still changing today. Look back to the times during the Civil War. Clothing was being morphed throughout the decade into different styles and fashions depending on the location of where the people lived such as towns or rural areas. Architecture in the 1860s also had varieties of styles such as the Victorian style.
In the Election of 1824 you got to see John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay in a crooked deal that became known as the “corrupt Bargain”. John Q.Adam agreed to make Henry Clay his secretary of state in return for him to be president. Because of this the next president will not be chosen behind closed doors. The impact the election of 1824 had was it ended the old ways of campaigning and also started the transition into the
The immense growth of industry and an increasing drive to move further westward from 1815 to 1860 marked a time that would forever change the fabric of America. Economic and territorial expansion would further drive sectionalism within the nation and disrupt national unity to a nearly unfathomable extent. Watt and Boulton experimenting with steam in England, Whitney combining wood and steel and creating the cotton gin, Slater dividing factory work among men, Morse spanning a still growing nation with the telegraph, Field expanding transportation and linking the market with steamboats– these men and many more crafted a mighty revolution of industry. This great growth in economics marked the fall of agriculture in the great race for economic
Economic Change in America Change is relevant within every time period, however, very substantial changes took place in the Americas following the War of 1812. Future success of the American society was to be dictated by the support the federal government supplied to domestic manufacturing and infrastructure to make drastic improvements economically. The imposition of high tariffs, advancements in transportation and the development of the cotton gin are among the most important changes made in the United States during this time.
The market revolution, which started in 1815, transformed worker lives, and improved the nation vastly; although it also dropped the economy as well. The traditional market, which was based upon power generated by animals and water, was slow in activities such as transportation. The growing nation underwent peace, which then catalyzed the reform of the organization of the economy. As such, transportation was heavily improved upon, along with manufacturing, banking, and commercial law. However, there were also two panics during the time that occurred that led to many Americans who were anxious and uncertain about working in the country.
There were significant changes in the hierarchy within the states. The American society became more egalitarian and less deferential, more meritocratic and less aristocratic. There were a few changes that were immediately experienced such as sweeping away of the English traditions like laws of land inheritance. The Church of England in America could no longer continue to exist as its head was
Undoubtedly, America has confronted many adversities throughout its history. Moreover, during the course of these challenges America prevailed, and ultimately formed a nation that has the ability to continuously adapt. There exists a myriad of examples that would support this claim; however, this essay will focus on four major events occurring between the 1860’s and 1920’s. The first event is how the American social status changed before and after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The second event is how the Civil War played a role in creating a need for Reconstruction, and how Reconstruction culminated in the Industrial Revolution.
