As Americans, we are supposed to be willing to widely and attentively consider other cultures traditions, practices, and styles of life. I personally don’t presume in this line from the American anthem “the land of the free and the home of the brave. A substantial amount of Americans’ are chauvinist’s, or just simply don’t take other cultures into consideration. This is why Fan Shen chooses to be his Chinese cultured, self while writing in America. There are many differences in American and Chinese writing. For example the word “I” has often been identified as a “bad” word; the word is extremely discouraged and is also known as a synonym for selfishness in Chinese writing. (Fan 61). Writing is supposed to be an active use of expression. Meanwhile in China it isn’t. America regularly focuses on individualism while china is focused on being a collective group. After a while he became more comfortable with only “the shadow of himself.” He felt more at ease to put down his thoughts without looking over his shoulder to worry about the reactions of his teachers. He felt he should write with creativeness, organization, power, and make not only complete but also valid points expressing his opinions within his essay. Materialistic goods aren’t important to Shen. He believes in idealism over materialism and says the materialistic world does not exist in his mind. Amadou Hampaté Bâ is extremely detailed throughout the book, The Fortunes of Wangrin, in explaining the colonial world in West African societies. He provides multiple examples in this work of fiction that precisely describe the factual aspects of African colonialism that we have discussed in class. I will point out a few of the examples that Bâ uses such as: limitations colonial governments set on Africans, the Métis relationships within colonies, and issues that arose, not only between Europeans and Africans, but within the native African communities as well. I will then point out certain details from the book that do not perfectly reflect the components of colonialism that we have studied in lecture.
The American Dream was once the idea of being able to come from poverty and take that and create something from nothing making a better life for one’s family than had in the past. In the book They Say, I say With Readings Cal Thomas and Brandon King have both written papers discussing the topic of the American dream each author using a different angle to exploit their views on the topic. This paper will analyze both author’s texts, creating three different points made by each and comparing them. The first point will be on the American Dream and how it is portrayed in both texts. The second point will cover any texts used in the essays in comparison to the other paper and how those writings improve the author’s argument.

In American Born Chinese, there are many plot elements used to make readers feel multiple things. Three elements I will be talking about in this essay are parallel plots, foreshadowing, and conflict. I will give some examples from the story that show how the author used the three plot elements. I will also explain whether or not I think these plot elements were successfully used.
Zheng He’s voyages have been a constant source of controversy in the historical world because of the differing opinions on whether they should be celebrated or not. In July of 1405, Zheng He was given a task to lead a fleet of ships for exploration. This task was assigned to him by Emperor Yongle of China’s Ming Dynasty. Zheng He went on seven separate voyages over the next twenty eight years through the Indian and Pacific Oceans with the largest fleet of wooden ships in history. He navigated his massive fleet from Nanjing along the Chinese coast and through these oceans to explore new lands and bring prosperity to China.

Gladwell’s “Rice Paddies and Math Tests” shows readers that stereotypes are formed by race, culture, gender, and nationality. He used several scenarios to show people that the Chinese and Asians are smarter than English speaking individuals because of their custom of living and the way in which their numbering system is used in mathematics (Gladwell, 229). Despite all the positive attributes that Gladwell gave to the Chinese and Asians, there is no truth behind stereotyping, only judgements. This is because stereotyping is placing a group of people in a certain category and each individual is different from each other. Some English speaking people are just as smart as the Asian or Chinese.

Two key words carried through the essay is a good man. Although the characters have severe personalities it contradicts the ideals of justice that they bring up so much. In general, the story is a conflict of interests. Each person has their own need to say something and in return pushing down another character. They play off this term by looking at the negatives instead of the positives.
Chinese tradition is opposed to individual glorification and considers anyone who desires personal enhancement as a threat to collectivism (Pye, 1982). Chinese are more group-oriented, they value respect and friendship. China is more Egalitarian, meaning that they share power and share authority and spread the authority out evenly. They do not expect all power as some cultures do. Next is Performance orientation, which means when the community encourages and rewards good things done and completed.
When I was younger, each year that I traveled to China to visit my relatives they always asked the question, “Are you American or Chinese?” And I never knew how to answer. I knew they wanted to hear the answer “Chinese”, but how could I tell them that when I despised going to Chinese School and was embarrassed to bring Chinese food for lunch? As I grew older, they stopped asking the question, but I never forgot it.
