How does the unreliable narrator and their mental illness affect the audience's perception of reality in the films Fight Club and Shutter Island
Introduction
"A mental illness is a condition that affects a person's thinking, feeling, or mood".First person narration can have a huge impact on how the audience perceives the reality of the situation going on in a film.A narrator that has a mental illness can hinder the audience from seeing the story as it truly is, causing the character, who's telling the story or whose point of view we see it from, to be labeled what is known as the unreliable narrator. In the film Fight Club the main character, who is never addressed by his name and is credited in the credits as just "The Narrator"(Edward Norton), is the narrator of his own story. Through the film's first person narration and use of Dissociative Identity Disorder in the form of Tyler Durden(Brad Pitt), his alter ego, we see the protagonist's life take a drastic turn and eventually into a downward spiral. The movie Shutter Island's approach to narration is somewhat different from Fight Club in that the main character Teddy Daniels( Leonardo DiCaprio) doesn’t narrate the story, in fact, there is no narrator at all, instead we see the story from Teddy's point of view and him

He eventually meets Tyler Durden, together they form a secret club known as "Fight Club". Later on they start to make more and more drastic actions such as blowing up credit card companie's buildings. Unbeknownst to the audience the narrator suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. At the end of the film the audience finds out Tyler Durden isn't real and is actually his alter ego that he created " You wanted a way to change your life. You could not do this on your own. All the ways you wish you could be, that’s me. I look like you wanna look , I fuck like you wanna fuck.... Im free in all the ways you are
1.In the previous past chapters and Holden acts more like child than an adult. Holden seems to call adults phonies and doesn’t really call children phonies. It 's immaterial to me," she said. "Hey—how old are you, anyhow?"That annoyed me, for some reason. "
Soha Tariq Ms. Mac ENG3U 6 March 2023 Holden Caulfield’s Psychoanalytic Examination One of the largest themes in Holden’s life is his inability to grow up. Throughout the book, many readers can tell that Holden lacks maturity, and is obviously afraid of adulthood. This can be portrayed by how Holden says, “The best thing, though, in that museum was the everything always stayed right where it was.” (Salinger, 121).
Nothing gold can ever stay. This is the main quote from The Outsiders. The Outsiders is about the rising feud between two social groups. One social group is called the Greaser, and the other group is called Socs. During the story it is about to Greasers, Ponyboy and Johnny, journey.
The outsiders have a lot of heros. Many people think Ponyboy and Two Bit also Johnny are heros. However Dally Winston was brave. He was outgoing.
How would you feel if they tried to take your family away from you or you away from your family? Well they’re trying to put Ponyboy in the system and take him from his family. When his big brother Darry has given up his hole life to take care of his brother. In the book “the outsiders” by S.E. Hinton some of the people wanted Ponyboy to be taken from his family and put into the system. In this essay I will be proving why Ponyboy should stay with his family.
“We gotta win that fight tonight,’ Dally said. His voice was hard. ‘We gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny” (Hinton 125)This quote means that the characters are going to compete against another gang in a fight because they want to make one of the gang members happy, while he is in the hospital. Young adults would be intimidated to follow these examples and start fights.
The captivating story of Ponyboy Curtis and the rivalry between the greasers and the socs has been praised and loved by many for years because of its accurate depiction of what it's like to be a teen, unfortunately this novel has been banned by many schools across the country. The Outsiders should not be banned at Astoria High School. This novel should not be banned because teens are mature enough to handle any mature content this book has, it is a classic book that many enjoy and that students should be able to experience, and banning this book is unnecessary censorship and pushes beliefs onto others. Teens are mature enough to handle the indelicate content presented to them in The Outsiders.
The movie “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” gives an inside look into the life of a patient living in a mental institution; helping to give a new definition of mental illnesses. From a medical standpoint, determinants of mental illness are considered to be internal; physically and in the mind, while they are seen as external; in the environment or the person’s social situation, from a sociological perspective (Stockton, 2014). Additionally, the movie also explores the idea of power relations that exist between an authorized person (Nurse Ratched) and a patient and further looks into the punishment a deviant actor receives (ie. McMurphy contesting Nurse Ratched). One of the sociological themes that I have observed is conformity.
“The Outsiders” is a novel written by S.E. Hinton. Originally Published in 1967, Hinton was only 18 when her novel hit the shelves. Instead of using her real name Susan Eloise Hinton, she used her initial’s so people wouldn’t know she was a girl making the book less desirable. The Outsiders is considered a cult classic and is typically assigned reading across the U.S. She always loved reading but did not like the books they had for young adults
Imagine actually wanting to read a book in ELA class that will later help youth endure some personal problems. In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a fifteen-year-old, the author displays two gangs that perform inappropriate actions and have several consequences for their actions. There are two gangs that go head to head to see who is better. People see greasers as the poor, dumb ones and the Socs as the smart, rich kids. Opposers want to remove this book from getting middle schoolers read the book in language art classes.
When Braddock had to fight with a broken hand, that really happened in real life and he did lose the fight. Joe Gould, Braddock’s manager, sold all of his belongings so that he could pay for Braddock to train for boxing. This event happened in both the movie and in real life. It has been said that Gould was like family to Braddock. Another factual aspect of the movie was when there were long lines stretching out of the building, of people waiting for relief money.
The narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” is unreliable because she cannot determine reality from hallucinations and cannot express herself because she is dominated by her role as a woman. The most unreliable narrator out of all the short stories is the wife who narrated the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman because she cannot distinguish reality. On the other hand, some would say that the narrator from Strawberry Spring by Stephen King is the most unreliable narrator because he is a serial killer and has no recollection of the murders he has committed. The narrator from The Yellow Wallpaper is the most unreliable because she cannot
In this book report I will talk about the book “The outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton, I will do a review of the story, the point of view, theme, symbols and my opinion about this book I really liked to read for the English class. The story is about a boy named Ponyboy who lived in a small town in Texas with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop were a gang war was taking place between two different social class people: The Socs and the Greasers. Ponyboy will learn the consequences bad acts can bring to your life in the middle of a gang war. The greasers were a middle class and not so social kind of people who liked to get in trouble and The other gang The Socs were a most of them a high class or middle-high class group of people who where they went they will always go in groups of like three or four people.
Schizophrenia is defined as a serious mental illness characterized by incoherent or illogical thoughts, bizarre behavior, speech, and delusions or hallucinations, such as hearing voices. (Kazdin, 2000) The narrator, who is the lead character in the movie, experiences schizophrenia which ultimately causes him to start a recreational fight club which is then inhabited by a massive following that intend on blowing up the metropolis in order to save it. Various psychosocial influences contributed to the narrator’s schizophrenia development. The main reason was due to his trouble sleeping which was evident when he goes to see a doctor and begs him for some medication that would allow him to get some sleep.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, prompts very important aspect of the human condition. In the movie, the protagonist, Mac McMurphy, is deemed dangerous, so the mental institute tries to suppress him (Kesey). The film highlights various aspects of human conditions like psychology, sociology and philosophy. The mental institute tries to suppress the mentally challenged people rather than to try to communicate with them.
