Freak The Geek Poem Analysis

The essay will consider the poem 'Practising' by the poet Mary Howe. It will explore how this poem generates its meaning and focus by analysing its techniques, metaphorical construct and its treatment of memory. The poem can primarily be seen to be a poem of missed opportunity. In this way is comes to form, alongside other poems of Howe's a study about a certain kind of loss and the recuperative efforts of memory, alongside the certainty of the failure of this recuperation. The paper will begin by giving a context to the poem with regard to Howe's life and work and will then proceed to analyse it directly, drawing attention to how it can be seen to fulfil this thesis about its content and meaning.

The main theme of the book, Speak, centers around feelings of isolation. Before beginning her freshman year, the main character, Melinda, attends an end of the summer high school party. For reasons that are not made known until later in the story, Melinda ends up calling the police, which causes the party to get busted and makes everyone hate Melinda. In addition to being an outcast among her friends and peers, Melinda also struggles in her relationships with the adults in her life. Throughout the course, we have discussed how many topics of adolescence can be critiqued through books and movies.

Alexandra Robbins, a choice award winning author, discusses high school life and the ‘cafeteria fringe’, or the outcasts in school who often sit on the outskirts of the cafeteria during lunch, separated from the populars, in her non-fiction novel, The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth. Jocks have made their way into our hearts in television and media all over the world. Stereotype of jocks are clear and is further displayed in the book “skud” and in the movie “The Breakfast Club”. The book “skud” by “Dennis Foon” is about four boys who attend the same high school all face problems relating to their understanding of what it means to be masculine. Tommy, a model student, is headed for the militar; Brad is looking at a hockey career; Andy, who has just secured an agent, may or may not break into the movie. These three have shared a common friendship that is challenged when Andy turns to a new kid, “ Shane” to teach him how to be a punk for an acting audition.

In Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld, the main character, Lee Fiora, decides to go to the north eastern boarding high school called Ault. Though once an outgoing person when she lived at home, Lee begins closing up at Ault. As a result, Lee finds herself living in two worlds: her old life at home and her new one at school. However, she doesn’t adjust herself to either. Because Lee feels she is living in two worlds, she does not let herself fit into either of them, separating herself from both of them.

The 1970s were a rough year for African-Americans, still fighting for social and political rights in the United States. Consequently, women still did not receive equal rights. A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a young adult book about the essence of innocence and grace among youth. Throughout this story, we are taught many things about jealousy and friendship. I feel the issue has put a large burden on society because of the different intensities of jealousy and rivalry, how i and how others interpret such situations, and how the lesson is interpreted throughout the story.

‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”

The poem, Useless Boys,is one that portrays a feeling of indignation, rebellion and finally, understanding by two boys who grew up with bitter views of their fathers’ onerous jobs. The narrator believes that the only reason his father stays at his job is for the money. In his naivety the son does not realize that at times living selfishly is the way things have to be. Sometimes commitments are made in a self-sacrificial and cowardly manner. No matter how “wrecking” his father’s career, he stays in order to provide for his family.

Friendship “When you're up in life, you get to know who your friends are. When you're down in life, you get to know who your friends are.” -Anonymous This quote fits perfectly with the novel. First of all, in the novel Freak the MIghty, Max and Kevin demonstrate a strong friendship.

While most adults fear peer pressure, it has been noted that most peers help adolescents make better choices instead of poor ones. (K.S. Berger, 2014) Peers had a huge role in The Breakfast Club, when Brian asked what would happen Monday and if they would all still be friends Claire broke his heart by saying she probably wouldn’t acknowledge him more or less. The reason Claire made this statement is because she was afraid of what her friends would say or how they would perceive her being friends with Brian.

In the poem “Ego-Tripping” by Nikki Giovanni, she normalizes her worth by continuing to royalist herself as a black woman who is essential to mankind. Giovanni creates a vision throughout the poem, which leaves a thought in mind of how woman should look at themselves with much confidence as Giovanni does. “Ego Tripping” was written by Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, Jr. who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 7, 1943. G9iovanni is a writer, poet, activist, and educator whose work was influenced during the Black Power Movements and the Civil Rights Movement. The poem was released in 2002.

How would you feel if someone could control what you were thinking? In “The Feed” written by M.T Anderson, everyone living in the community had a feed in their brain that was controlled by one large organization. Violet, the main character, suffers through a malfunction in her feed that changes the way she sees her society. Most people’s opinions can be changed when they have experienced the benefits and the disadvantages of something. Since Violet is aware of how life is with and without the feed, she becomes hesitant to believing that her community is being run efficiently.
