Smith had a hard childhood, his father died when he was only 4 years. His father was the founder of the Greyhound bus line. He was was born in Marks, Mississippi, and he has two sisters. He had a bone disease that was know as Calve Perthes disease which is a disease that basically give you arthritis in your hips so you can not walk. He later overcame this disease and he actually ended up playing football. After this he served in the Marines Corps fighting in the Vietnam War and he earned a Silver star, Bronze star, and 2 Purple Hearts. He said, “I do not believe I could have built FedEx without the skills I learned from the Marine Corps.” (About.fedex.com) He also said, “My four years in the Marine Corps left me with an indelible understanding of the value of leadership skills.” (achievement.org) He was already an excellent fier by age fifteen.
