When you arrive to college there are parties every night of the week. Drinking beer every night will be a good time, but the effects will show up on your stomach. Beer is a lot of empty calories and has no nutritional value. The average beer has around 150 calories and, these calories can begin to accumulate as the night goes on while you’re drinking. When drinking, the liver burns the alcohol instead of fat cells (Zelman). Also, while drinking, eating foods with unhealthy fats don’t help. Unless, you’re a mother to a newborn child trying to get your breasts to produce more milk drinking doesn’t help with much. Avoiding beer completely would be the best decision, but drinking occasionally wont hurt as long as its in
Avery is neither a scientist nor a doctor. Although, common sense and substantial evidence can tell us the major causes of weight gain and psychological trauma can be attributed to students having to stress about grades, financial responsibilities, and one’s future. The validity in connecting students gaining weight from stress is the infamous freshman 15. As has been mentioned, during adolescence, hormonal changes develop, including increases in the sex hormones, estrogen, and testosterone. These hormones influence the growth and development of the body. Drinking alcohol during this period disrupts the hormonal balance necessary for normal development of organs, muscles, and bones. So, underage consumption of alcohol can lead to some serious issues, such as memory, growth, development, and endocrine
I was a victim of the Freshman 15. My freshman year of college, I gained nearly 20 pounds. I remember my parents mentioned that they could tell I gained wait from when they dropped me off for school and picked me up for Fall Break – that is only a 2 month gap! I gained so much weight that I became a snorer. It was really unfortunate for my roommate because she was such a light sleeper and my snoring would wake her up in the middle of the night.

College to today 's youth is a very exciting time. It 's now the time where young adults start to take on full responsibility for their lives, and all the many changes that are happening as they begin their college career. One major responsibility many students seem to negligent when entering college is their health, especially in the case of diet and exercise. On today 's college campuses food is everywhere, but the opportunities for exercise are few. Sternbergh says that “College students are much more overwhelmed, much more stressed, much more anxious, and much more depressed than they’ve ever been. I think we really have a crisis writ large at colleges in how students are doing in terms of self-care and mental health.” (Santos) I think this is very true, especially nowadays. I believe that we as students are given too much work to do in such little time.
As a student, I always find myself stressed about things like homework, tests, due dates, grades, rent, and all other sorts of college-related problems. When I start to feel overwhelmed by all of the noise of being a young college student, I turn to the one thing that gives me the greatest sense of purpose and inner piece; weightlifting. For me, a weightlifting session is a form of meditation, a time when I can be by myself and truly find inner peace. There is no better feeling to me when I enter a gym with a planned and detailed workout in mind. The feeling of anticipation and readiness to vent out my stress gives me the motivation to hit a workout hard.
Homework Homework has been a part of Americans’ learning for so long, that the idea of not having to complete it may seem incredible, surreal, or even impossible. The survey of 1,000 K-12 teachers found that middle school teachers assign about 3.2 hours of homework each week. On a normal day, students have five core classes, and when you multiply that by 3.2, you have 16 hours of homework for middle school students. Although most educators believe that homework is beneficial, teachers should stop assigning it because kids need time to be kids, they need more rest, and students need a brain break. It is true that most people think that kids have plenty of free time; however, this is not entirely the case, as homework takes time away from other leisure activities or house chores.
Individuals have different ways of dealing with stress, some tend to reduce their food intake or increase their food intake. The reason why most of the college students are stress with their school life is because of the pressure to perform well both academically and athletically, to fit in with peers, and to form relationships. One of the research found that students who gain weight during the college period tend to continue a slow, steady gain in weight. One of the studies performed by Gres (2008) among 135 college students, statistically significant but has fair weight increases during the freshman year for most participants. Young adults when moved
There are a lot of problems in the world like poverty and pollution but hunger seems to be the most severe to me. There are so many different types of people who are famished most of the day just because they are homeless or because of their race. Studies show former foster youth, L.G.B.T. students and students of color are at substantially increased risk. One group of people who are in hunger the most is college students. College alone is so expensive that a lot of students can’t afford to even feed themselves.
focused on studying the physical activity of college students. This study found that about 40-50% of students are inactive. From those who are physically active, researchers found that social factors significantly contribute to their motivation to be active. Researchers also found that female students were more motivated by their family members. While males students were more motivated by peers and friends (Xiaofen et al,. 2005).
Students face various challenges throughout their college career. Thus, the problems that students have can range from balance, new lifestyle, to financial problems. Therefore, finding a balance between being a student, possibly working, and keeping up with their social life is a necessity. Similarly, others are away from home for the first time thus, they have a new responsibility with being on their own and findings ways to deal with homesickness. Likewise, being exposed to new financial situations is yet another challenge college students will need to learn how to cope with.
“Stress and related conditions are growing increasingly common among college students” (Conwell 13). Students endure many different academic challenges in college, including not being academically prepared for higher learning and drinking alcohol. Acclimating to college life is often harder than expected.
