“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” A man named Sophocles once said this in the play, Antigone. Pride is where a person has a very high and mighty opinion of their own selves. This may lead to turmoil in lives of their self or others. In the literature pieces, “The Scarlet Ibis”, Speak, Ready Player One, The Odyssey, The Lord of the Flies, “Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, and “All Summer in a Day”, the common theme of pride is represented throughout the novels. The long-term outcome of pride led to the destruction of a humble character and led to chaos. Pride is shown throughout any individual who has an explosive amount of confidence in their own self. …show more content…
Brother, Doodle’s brother quotes, “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who could not walk.” Brother obtains an immense amount of pride in himself where he even comments to tell the audience that he, himself, was embarrassed of having a younger brother who could not walk. This remark and the characterization of Brother eventually led to chaos where Brother abandons Doodle in a storm, and the outcome resulted in Doodle’s death. Because of Brother’s pride, it led to chaos that resulted in death. The short-term outcome of exhibiting pride toward a society or others may lead to self-benefit. An example of the short-term benefit of showing pride comes from the novel, Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline. In the novel, Nolan Sorrento displays his pride and threatens Parzival. He quotes, “Log out before I say it’s ok, and your whole world goes boom. Understand? Now start talking.” This is an example of authoritative pride used by Nolan Sorrento. Parzival ends up with the happy ending rather than Sorrento does. As these characters have displayed such pride, nothing came along with it but pure catastrophe. In one of the scenes of The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men are trying to venture back to their homeland, when they meet a Cyclops. Odysseus and his men slay the Cyclops. After he does, Odysseus says, “If any mortal man ever asks you who it was inflicted upon your eyes this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of the cities.” Because of his excessive pride, Poseidon, the god of sea, is committed to kill Odysseus, which; therefore, leads to chaos. In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, pride is also often shown. Adolescent boys were stranded on an island and decide to form together as a society. Jack, one of the boys, doesn’t want to abide by the rules and responsibilities nor does he want Ralph as his leader. His pride sways him to go against the group. He says in the book, “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you.” Jack decides to hold a vote to kick out Ralph as their chief, and no one votes. Jack’s pride was lost and ended up being led to turmoil. Pride can be anywhere at any time, especially in schools. Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a young student named Melinda who experiences depression throughout her first year of high school. Melinda was raped by a boy named Andy Evans. Andy mentions, “I never raped anybody… you wanted it just as bad as I
In the essays “Pride” by Dagoberto Gilb and “Pride and Humility” by Thomas A. Tarrants, III, D.Min., The authors discuss the same topic but they have a different conclusion. In “Pride,” Gilb conclude that we are all shaped by a strong sense of pride, so we should still be proud of ourself. However, in “Pride and Humility,” Tarrants conclude that pride is basically a sin and it’s the devil’s most effective and destructive tool. Although both authors addressed the same topic in their essay writing and both use their methods to explore the forms of pride, they do so by using viewpoints and different attitudes toward pride.
Finally, the final color that was mentioned in F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that supports the novel’s everlasting optimism theme are the color blue. The color blue was used to symbolize calm and heaven. Fitzgerald used the color blue to symbolize calm and heaven for when Nick Carraway came back home after Jay Gatsby was funeralize, and he went on a stroll down into Gatsby’s backyard,”[....] I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it.
It increases self-centeredness while decreasing concern for others. For example, a prideful spouse ruins a marriage because they cause arguments and cannot be compassionate and understanding. Additionally, pride can destroy religious faith because it prevents recognition of sinfulness and produces feelings of superiority, which decreases God’s presence in a person’s life. In conclusion, the narrator’s reckless actions caused by pride and pride’s destructive nature in the real world are evidence that pride is a dangerous
Jealousy is the root of a lot problems this is the case with F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby. In this book we will talk about how jealousy is the main factor in this topic. Consequently proving how jealous Tom Buchanan is when he is surrounded Jay Gatsby.
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald screwed morality is evident throughout the chapters five and six. Many characters in the novel depicted morality, however, most if not all twisted the morality to better accompany their needs. To begin, one of the characters that demonstrated screwed morality constantly would be Tom Buchanan. Throughout the novel, Tom Buchanan can be viewed as an antagonist due to the fact, he cheated on Daisy, his wife, with Myrtle Wilson. Screwed morality was evident in the quote,“ He frowned.
Characters in The Great Gatsby put the thought of money and success before their own health and living standards or personal relationships. When Gatsby takes Nick downtown to go meet up with some associates for lunch, he introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem. Wolfshiem is clearly a mobster of some sort and goes on to discuss an old building across the street from where they were dining after Nick questions its significance,“‘The old Metropole,’ brooded Mr. Wolfshiem gloomily. ‘Filled with faces dead and gone. Filled with friends gone now forever.
In conclusion pride can mean many things and can be shown in many ways. At some point we may be humble. On our way there it may be be more difficult. The concept of pride is like a explantion of how theuniverse started.
Have you ever felt tempted to cheat on your homework or on a test? Have you been prideful of what your status or accomplishments? In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, the brave hero Odysseus encountered these obstacles of temptations and pride that people today still face. Therefore, temptation and pride were Odysseus’ greatest enemy throughout his journey back to Ithaca, as they distracted him on his voyage, prevented him from getting home, and displeased the gods.
Pride. Pride never changes. It has come in the same way since day one and every human and even animals experience the feeling of pride. The emotion starts from something little like getting an “A” on a test but grows a large as the pride of winning a war and living free. In Pride, by Dagoberto Gilb, readers are given both hidden and concrete examples of what pride is and people who have experienced grave amounts of it at once.
In contemporary times, being true to oneself and being open about one’s opinions can be a magnet for hate and criticism; online and in the real world. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this years annual Vox Populi Youth Symposium. My name is Tom Sullivan and I will be discussing one of Shakespeare’s most known quotes, ‘To thine own self be true’, and why it is still relevant today. Romeo and Juliet is a story about the hatred between two families erupting into violence, until two children of these enemy families fall in love and both commit suicide; putting an end to their parents’ feud. The story focuses around the love between the opposites and how they fall in love regardless of which family they belong to.
Pride...is something to fear. This quote is directly connected with the story “The Scarlet Ibis”. Brother’s past now haunts him. Pride is a powerful thing and it's not always good.
One of the seven deadly sins is the act of having too much pride. Pride in general is not an evil feeling to have. It is human to have pride in oneself, but having too much pride is unhealthy and will cause problems somewhere along the way. Two characters who show a harmful amount of pride are Sylvia from Toni Bambara’s “The Lesson” and Sammy John Updike’s “A&P”. A famous quotation states “Pride (arrogance) comes before Destruction... and a haughty spirit, before a fall.”
The two myths, ¨Phaethon¨ and ¨Daedalus and Icarus¨, both share their lesson about pride. The literary elements: character, imagery, and conflict, can be used to build up the story by the author. The two main characters, Icarus and Phaethon, can impact the story. In this essay, it has the three prongs, which are the literary elements: characterization, imagery, and conflict, can impact the shared theme: A prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are wiser can lead to disastrous consequences. For the beginning, the traits of the characters can impact the myth.
Pride often leads to someone’s downfall - this idea has been developed from the playwright “Oedipus the king” through Rey’s interactive oral presentation. He discussed that Oedipus’ excessive pride over his knowledge due to solving riddles allows him to not listen to others including the respected Prophet , his dear relative Kreon - he seldom pays heed to them and decides to pursue further for searching the predecessor’s murderer . His own path opens up hidden , dark truth about his life. From the presentation it has been evident that Oedipus was not smart enough to realize that the path he set for himself, will eventually bring nothing but pain.
Pride Pride is a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired. The word pride both positive and negative meanings that can be seen throughout history. The usage of the word pride gives it a negative cynical connotation, describing people as vain, arrogant or belittling other people.
