There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture. As a recipient of the Gilman Scholarship, I aim to study the French language in Paris, France through the four-week Intensive French program offered by Florida …show more content…
As an Economics major, having international experience in a culturally-rich environment such as Paris will allow me to exercise my language and intercultural skills. I especially look forward meaningful forming relationships with people from diverse backgrounds; my peers and the local residents. The French language in particular is spoken around the world in both Western and developing nations, including my parents’ homeland of Haiti. When I graduate I want to become a Foreign Service Officer, with a specialization in Francophone countries, giving me the power to connect with local communities and make a positive impact through my work in the official government language. My career goal is to one-day serve as the United States Ambassador for Haiti. Because I am deeply passionate about the plight of Haitians that immigrate to the United States every year so I believe becoming the Ambassador will give me a strong voice to influence Haitian public policy and education, as well as improving relations with the Dominican Republic and United States. Attaining working proficiency in the French language is the first step towards attaining this …show more content…
My father has recently become unemployed, and my mother is still recovering from surgery as I write this essay and is also unable to work. I know my parents support my decision to study abroad, but they must prioritize the day-to-day needs of my siblings and their medical bills, and as such they cannot possibly afford to aid me financially. Unfortunately, I have continued to put off participation in international education because of financial hardship. I distinctly remember during the fall of my freshman year of college not being able to afford a one-week international exchange program. I felt devastated as I wrote an email to the program director saying that I wanted nothing more than to participate but I did not have the monetary means to finance my voyage. At the beginning of my junior year, I applied for another cultural exchange program with the eager desire of broadening my horizons, but I again lacked the financial means to fund my participation. Now that I have found a program that is in alignment with my current academic interests and my long-term career goals, I am determined to find the funding that will make my participation
In the article, "Me Talk Pretty One Day" By David Sedaris, the author explains how he conquers his hardships and learns French. From the beginning, he explains his insecurities and fears of his age and returning to school. He continues to tell difficulties he faced with his malicious teacher who torments the students including himself. It seemed neither the class nor living in France was helping him learn French. With his dedication and perseverance, he succeeded in understanding the French language.
All France is coming to Saint Domingue, to try to put the fetters on our limb, but not France, with all her troops of Rhine, the Alps, the Nile, the Timber, nor all Europe to help her, can extinguish the soul of Africa.” This speech led by Toussaint Louverture gained his soldiers confidence and respect; which showed him as generosity, humanity, and courage. Toussaint Louverture did whatever it took to keep Haiti independent from the French. He worked alongside the slaves using his knowledge from once being a slave to assist them in obtaining their freedom.
The Culverhouse College of Commerce houses some of the brightest students here on our campus that aspire to one day be professionals in the real world. I consider it to be a privilege to be one of the 8,500 students, and it would be an honor to represent the college. I would love to pursue other students to experience Culverhouse through my role as an ambassador. The ambassador program will enable me to be more involved in my college, as well as share my wonderful experience with others. These two reasons are what ultimately motivated me to apply for this program.

One last interview, one last tour, one last chance; it was the last year I could become apart of the AAE Ambassador program. Since my freshman year I have craved to been a member of the Ambassador program. I survived the first two cuts of the process; application and interview. Next was the tour, the step that would determine who would and wouldn’t be apart of Ambassadors. Thirty minutes, that all the time you were permitted to inform them of all your knowledge upon the school.
It been ten years since I have not seen Haiti. I miss the smell, the people, the ongoing language, the natural food and the atmosphere. This trip is very important because
I also work well with french speakers, as shown by my refugee hours. I have a lot of experience working with animals, as shown by my work in the Carrboro High School garden and my choice to work for a non-profit rescue for wild animals. I collaborate well with others in group work, finding the discussions associated with teamwork to be very
I’m able to resonate with a plethora of things, yet the thing I consider my identity is I’m an adopted, Haitian immigrant. I was born in Haiti in 1998, in a small village in Thomazeau, I moved to Croix-des- Bouquets right after my birth and I lived there until I was 9 years old. My family's financial situation was adequate. My mom was always able to find a way to make ends meet. This cause our neighbor to be envious of us.
I believe that the mission of a student ambassador is to promote the vision, growth and quality of University of Maryland, by optimizing the experience of current students, prospective students and special guests. I would like to be a student ambassador primarily because I want to get more involved with the university; not to mention the positive impact it will have on my CV. I would also gain experience in public speaking, building friendships with fellow ambassadors and develop my leadership skills. Furthermore, this offers a responsibility that can be both challenging and extremely rewarding.
When I graduate I would like to work for a company that has global operations and potentially someday have the opportunity to work in a country outside of the United States. This experience would help give me an understanding of what it would be like to live and work in a foreign country in order to prepare me for future endeavors. I have chosen to take Intercultural Communication and The International Business of Sport during session one and Italian Cuisine and Modern Architecture during
I am sorry that you were unable to join me at the Study Abroad professional development event. At this professional development event I had the pleasure of speaking to a very kind and informative representative from Arcadia University named Jennifer. Jennifer spoke to friends of mine and I, specifically, about the College of Global Studies at Arcadia. I attended this event because ever since my older sister studied abroad in Europe, I have been very interested to do the same. It would be amazing to go to Italy because there are so many opportunities to go to more areas from there.
My parents always stressed how we should do our best and have to work for the things we want. Growing up I learned this doesn’t come easy. As everything college is upon us I have reflected on these principles and pondered how I will come up with the money for my college education. The clear cut answer is scholarships. You will see in this essay that I am a worthy candidate for this scholarship.
My educational journey has been an experience I will remember. I have attended school in three different countries, Antigua, St. Thomas, and New York. A diverse educational experience has allowed me to interact with many different cultures and confront many of the different topics we discussed in class. At that time however, I was not fully aware of the implications of certain situation but after many readings I can now fully understand many of the experiences I encountered in my journey. All the information I have learned in this class however will bring all my experience together where I can make much more sense of it than I could when I was younger.
Furthermore, i love the feeling I get when I explore new ideas, histories, beliefs, and scenarios. It not only increases my knowledge, but also helps me overcome problems that I am dealing with. I get to experience life’s problems, pleasures, and I come out of my personal bubble to become a better person by exploring new cultures. Travelling is my passion because it’s something that I am not afraid to chase after. I get to learn more and more about myself and I am able to expand my horizons every time I travel.
