Gothic architecture is a specific type of design utilized on edifices such as cathedrals. The marvels of this architecture include detailed sculptures and stained glass windows that represent various religious events. Medieval people interpreted the design as a religious trait because of the abundant appearance in Catholic churches. As described by Edd Morris, “Gothic architecture marked the first time that beauty and aesthetic values had been incorporated into building design". Builders wanted to see who could construct the better, more decorative building and all for the prestige of the Christian region. This is where the pride toward religion began to blend with the creation of religious architecture. Gothic architecture is still very important and used constantly with designers, explained further here, “Artists still gather inspiration from gargoyles, architectural and religious features that were found in churches beginning with the 1200s’ (the rose, stained glass, ribbed vaulting), Gothic text (typography), Gothic floral elements (like the ‘Fleur de lys” Gothic symbol), Gothic cathedrals with pointed arches and high towers, Gothic religious paintings and much more. In some design works, the Gothic style is mainly used as inspiration to create unnatural creatures with masculine, forceful, tough, gloomy, sinister, and mysterious traits.” Many modern-day logos are inspired from gothic architecture and we don't even realize it. For example the logo for the famous band “Iron Maiden” is inspired from it. Gothic architecture has made an impact on modern - day society greatly.

Every color had an emotional connection, as did the size and design of architecture. Buildings were reaching out of Romanesque and into Gothic style, going from compartmentalized and dark, to letting in light and being open. The first example of this is the Rayonnet style, which emphasized the letting of light, and means, “to shine.” The open corridor was a sense of harmony, and the invention of the flying buttress allowed the Chartres Cathedral to have the open flowing and harmonious design it has today. The flying buttress was a support piece that kept the architecture from falling inward due to lateral thrust from the wall.
Gothic literature is a style of literature that takes place in the past, most of the time it has someone who dies and it has a creepy vibe/tone behind it . Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is a good example of Gothic literature because it shows how a man goes to visit an old friend and see how his friend and his friends twin sister die. “The whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day. ”(13)

Various gothic elements are depicted by the following gothic writers: Washington Irving, Richard Matheson and Edgar Allan Poe; elements such as: entrapment and supernatural characteristics are illustrated in the short stories: “The Devil and Tom Walker;” “Prey;” and “The Raven.” Entrapment was a significant element represented in all of the short stories aforementioned. In, “The Devil and Tom Walker,” soon after Tom Walker established his broker’s shop in Boston “he made money hand over hand, became a rich and mighty man, and exalted his cocked hat upon "Change." He built himself, as usual, a vast house, out of ostentation, but left the greater part of it unfinished and unfurnished, out of parsimony. He even set up a carriage in the fulness of his vain-glory, though he nearly starved the horses which drew it”(Irving 326).

The Portrayal of Gothic Elements in A Sicilian Romance 2.3.1 The Setting Radcliffe wrote A Sicilian Romance after visiting the beautiful Island of Sicily. She was fascinated by the magnificent remains of a castle which belongs to the house of Mazzini . In the preface of A Sicilian Romance , she describes her journey and how these places inspired her to write about the past time when these ruins were enormous buildings teeming with life : As I walked over the loose fragments of stones which lay scattered through the immense area of the fabric, and surveyed the sublimity and grandeur of the ruins, I recurred, by a natural associations of ideas, to the times when these walls stood proudly in their original splendor, when the halls were the scenes of hospitality and festive magnificent, and when they resounded with the voices of those whom death had long since death swept from the earth.
The Gothic Influence Although the word “Gothic” is often associated with supernatural creatures or haunted, abandoned places, the word actually originates from an elaborate style of architecture. The reason that the word “Gothic” has become associated with these ideas of horror and death is because the architecture was thought of the ideal place for mysterious, suspenseful, and dark stories to occur. These types of stories became known as the Gothic genre. The Gothic literary genre often includes elements of fear, death, and strong emotions, and is set in set in a dark or mysterious place.

The designs & structure of this style was inspired by the medieval architecture (Figure.02). Though both styles begin with the term ‘Gothic’, each styles has its own significance. [Fig.01 – Saint Gatien’s Cathedral, Tours, France] [Fig.02 – St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, Australia] There is a common public notion that both, gothic and gothic revival styles of architecture carry similar intentions behind their designs. But, in my point of view gothic revival style has been misinterpreted to be the same as the gothic style of architecture. While in reality, the intention behind the gothic revival style is to bring out more aesthetic values to buildings such as romanticism and
Arthur despairingly discloses, “Our baby son had been thrown clear, clear against another tree. He lay there crumpled on the grass below it, dead” (Hill 164). The author made sure that the woman carried through with the curse instead of breaking it. This is the true definition of a gothic element.

Setting is the key element in Gothic Literature. It displays the different places and architectures that are essentials to visualize Gothic. The setting is highly significant in a Gothic novel because it helps to add horror and fear to its mood and dreadful weakness to its characters. As said by Snodgrass, the settings of Gothic literary works present an extensional symbolic psychological case to its human characters (158).Gothic fictions are usually set in isolated landscapes or highly secured prisons, secret passages or corridors, old castles or ghostly houses, and graveyards. According to Hogle, Gothic areas might be "a castle, a foreign place, an abbey, a vast prison, a subterranean crypt, a graveyard, a primeval frontier, or island, a large old house or theatre. . .
Some of the plenty gothic elements are: the evil, the secret places, the scary atmosphere. The protagonist is good at first, but transforms in a bad person; handsome at first but he transforms in an ugly person at the end because of his character and the portrait, represents his inner soul. The portrait, the main symbol of the novel, carries all the marks of Gray 's degeneration, who is exploring all possible vices and desires, without to notice his moral decay. And all these marks show on the canvas, become a sort of conscience for Dorian.
