It’s not with every college that one may come across opportunities such as those Westminster offers to its students. After visiting the school and attending a breakout session for the Honors Program, I knew that I had to apply. The program immediately appealed to me for multiple reasons, a couple of these being its challenging nature and uniqueness. In not many other places can students have sit-down conversations with guest speakers and get one-on-one attention from professors. In not many other programs would I have the opportunity to write a graduate level Honors Thesis my senior year. Through interacting with students working toward a broad range of majors, I may find interests in things I had never thought to study before. In addition to this, I feel as if it is incredibly important to be exposed to opinions other than one’s own in order to learn and grow, and this program could provide the perfect opportunity for this through conversations inside and outside of the classroom. I appreciate the Honors Program’s push for students to have off-campus experiences, such as studying abroad (something I certainly intend on doing my junior year), as I believe these experiences are yet another wonderful opportunity for personal growth that allow students to step out of their comfort zone and develop communication skills that can be used throughout their lives. Additionally, The Honors Program would be a great way to help me prepare for graduate school. Not only would I have the opportunity to challenge myself through upper level classes, which on its own would be of benefit when applying to a graduate program, but by having an Honors Thesis or Honors Project under by belt, I would undoubtedly have an edge over other applicants as this would show the university that I’m prepared for advanced courses and the application of my
A number of high schools, colleges, and universities have adopted an honor code to cultivate integrity amongst students at their institution. These principles vary from cheating to tardiness, to plagiarism and have garnered praise from multiple outlets for apparently being successful in preventing cheating and enforcing punishment for those who break the rules. However, others like myself, criticize the honor code due to skepticism in its abilities to prevent such rule breaking, its success in being enforced, and whether it would actually convince a student to not cheat. I find it is very gratifying to know that when we all work together for a common cause, the outcome is beneficial to people in our community. These experiences in the New Hampton community have created and strengthened my values of hard work, academic success through education, and community participation. As an eager young person, I believe these are the key factors in having a career and being successful in life. I know that many of my peers share my enthusiasm for success and the New Hampton community has a history of strengthening young people to become successful adults. I also know the difficult decision that is before this committee in making the choice for those whom will be selected into this year’s National Honors Society, this decision will require both thought and hard consideration.
Implemented since the beginning of a student's first days of education, the honor code has stuck to every essential stage of a student’s education. While an honor code dictates a student to remain academically honest, the honor code has not always been follow through. Honor codes should not be established in my school or any at all, as it does not reduce academic dishonesty, can create tensions between students and the punishments toward breaking the honor code is too strict. The honor code must be eliminated as it does not reduce student dishonesty.
Today I am deeply humbled to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society. To me this means I have exemplified everything you look for in a student who goes above and beyond, not just in academics but in athletics, the community and at home as well. For the past four years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic pursuit of quality work in the legal system. While in college I pursuit a criminal justice major with the intention to go to law school after graduating. I dreamed of becoming a lawyer since I was a young girl. As mentioned before, I have a passion for conducting experiments to expand my knowledge; I believe through the Honors College I would be able to find other interested students, and obtain the grants and funds necessary to conduct research projects. Currently I am working on a cognitive neuroscience and educational analysis research project with other undergraduate students and few graduate students. We are measuring fluid intelligence with matrix reasoning and using the data to predict tested individual’s success in educational and professional environments. The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one. I would like to see the Honors College embrace non traditional classroom learning, such as, hold a Humanities class in an art gallery or a History class in a museum. I want to expand learning from reading about experiences to relating to the experiences we’re reading about. This outside learning expands the mind into deeper thought than and gives more material to fuel discussions than just words on a page. This way, Honors College students are introduced to a new way of learning that they can practice everyday amongst society without being in a traditional classroom
Before deciding to apply for the Honors Program at National Park College, I recognized that I aspired to be a part of something that not only challenged myself but to be a part of an organization that would make a significant impact on future students that attend National Park and the college itself. When I first was informed about the Honors Program I was considerably excited and anxious about what the program may intel and all the opportunities that would be provided to the students who were admitted. Many of my peers and teachers in my high school motivated and urged me to apply even with the chance that I may not get accepted. After the application process, I attempted to not bother myself with the prospect that I may or may not get admitted because I knew only the most exceptional students were going to be eligible. Luckily, I got accepted.
Academic honor codes You better watch out for these honor codes or you’ll get suspended for something you didn’t even know you were doing. Two college students in a science computer class punished for breaking the honor code. They helped each other with the work without specifics. Isn’t it possible they accidentally came up with the same choice code for a computer hack.
At the end of my first semester, an advisor told me that I was eligible for honors courses which boasted small class sizes, more hands-on learning, and the best professors. I decided to take Honors American Government and I was absolutely stunned by the enthusiasm of the students around me. I never thought I would end up in this program. In a strange and perceptible way I’m glad I did. This program allowed me to come into realization of what I really wanted to do and laid down the foundation of me taking those steps to achieve my goals.
