Being a setter in volleyball can be very difficult. A setter has to set the ball very high so that one of the hitters can get a nice hit. Often the setters make a mistake, either by setting it to the wrong hitter or not setting it high enough. Even if they make a lot of bad sets, they can still make the next one hittable. People in real life or characters in books are like this as well; sometimes they do bad things or make bad choices, but they still do some good things. In Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, a few of the characters are bad people with good in their hearts. First, Magwitch has good in his heart, even though he is a convict. Magwitch saves all of his extra money for years to become Pip’s benefactor. “ ‘ Yes, Pip, dear boy, I’ve made a gentleman on you! It’s me wot has done it! I swore that time, sure as ever I earned a guinea, that guinea should go to you.’ ” (Dickens 139). Magwitch tells Pip that he has made Pip a gentleman. The convict also says that he swore to himself that every coin he earned should go to Pip. Next, after Magwitch is imprisoned, Magwitch tells Pip only to visit if he comes with Wemmick. The convict says this to protect Pip’s reputation. Lastly, Magwitch …show more content…
First, Magwitch is a convict, but still does good things for Pip. Next, Mrs. Joe tells Joe to forgive Pip, even though she dislikes Pip. Third, Pip made poor choices in the way he treated others and how he spent his money, but decided to be much kinder to Joe and Biddy and set aside money for Herbert. Even though these characters were bad, they still did good things. Sometimes people do this in real life. Volleyball setters can come back from a bad set to one that their hitter can get a kill on. Setters have a big responsibility on getting the ball to where it is supposed to go. It is very difficult to be a setter in
However, when he meets Estella and she ridicules him for his mannerisms and appearance, he instantly becomes distraught about those things. It is a huge blow to his self-esteem and he becomes insecure. Instead of standing by Joe, Pip leaves to pursue higher social
Although the rapid dog in "To Kill a Mockingbird" only appears in one chapter and is killed rather quickly, it acts as a symbol for the reoccurring theme of the evilness in racism throughout the book, illustrates the courage that is gained from overcoming difficult situations, and being an experience that allows for the development of maturity. In a setting that is dominated by racism, such as in Maycomb, a majority of the population also have aspects of evilness due to the damaging effects of their racist behavior, which is represented by the rabid dog. During the Tom Robinson trial, Scout thought to herself how watching Judge Taylor was “like watching Atticus walk into the street, raise a rifle to his shoulder and pull the trigger, but watching
Pip's fairy tale like view on the upper class is shattered when Magwitch, a convict, declares that he's Pip'd benefactor. Pip can't believe that a low-class criminal had wealth rivaling that of a wealthy gentleman's. It's a wake up call for Pip. (page 294) Magwitch's death also brings out Pip's softer, more sentimental side as Pip learns to love a person for who they are now and not what their standing or past was. (page 428) Pip sells all his belongings to pay for his debts and starts anew as a humble clerk at Clarriker and Herbert's company.
You can see that John Proctor is a good man, he tries to help everyone and he does not meddle in the lives of others, he is considered an upstanding member of the community. John Proctor is a hardworking middle aged farmer, husband, and father. People love and respect him although they know he is not without human failing. For example with Mary, when the Counsel take Proctor’s wife, He starts to scream at her and almost hits her. I understand that he doesn’t want to lose his wife but, he can be gentler with her or when he has an affair with their teenage servant Abigail Williams, a girl that tells lies, manipulates her friends and the entire town, and eventually sends innocent people to their deaths.
Most may argue that being a good person is easy and that anyone can easily do it. But the reality is that it's hard, you need a lot of good traits and to learn that it's not always about you. Throughout the book Nick is that person, always putting others before himself. Though a good majority of the characters in the book aren’t the most genuine and good of people, Nick is one that stands out the most. Based on my reading, Nick is a good person because of his selflessness and trustworthiness towards others.
This is just one of many examples of how Charles Dickens shows love and compassion through
Pip confided in Joe at the forge, Herbet in London, had a love interest in Estella, and was enemy's of Orlick and Drummel. Adding Biddy to that list would make things repetitive. In the book Biddy was there to show Pip the practical
Everyone has their own character traits. Many character traits can have a negative or a positive effect on others. Some character traits include nice, funny, and mean. Not only do people have attributes like these, but so do literary characters. In the realistic fiction, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, all of the different characters have different traits that affect others in different ways.
He not only pleads for the life of a thief but also wants to help him. The boy does not stumble the thin line separating good and evil but rather, he does not even see the line. Too good to truly understand that a small evil is sometimes necessary. But is his goodness good or a danger to their survival? Readers are left wondering where they stand on the scale of good and evil.
Divisions among such must come, and must be met as they come,” (page 192). In reality, Pip does not deserve Joe’s friendship, but Joe continues to act kind-hearted and remain in Pip’s life, even though Pip displays rude behavior. This right here, represents true friendship, and the power that Joe’s bond has with Pip. When Pip needs help, and comes back to his home, Joe still helps Pip. Joe always supports Pip and exemplifies a great friend.
In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens tells the story in the perspective of a young boy growing up in England during the Victorian Era. Philip “Pip” Pirrip is the protagonist, where we discover his life experiences and expectations through his narration. Pip’s sister, Mrs. Joe, and her husband, Mr. Joe, greatly influence his childhood. He meets many people later on who teaches him that not everyone will be happy and what it really means to have “great expectations”. Through Pip’s journey, Dickens suggests that happiness becomes achievable if one learns to accept and fix their flaws.
Another time is when Pip is introduced to Aged at Mr.Wemmick's house. Mr. Wemmick informs Pip that it pleases Aged when people nod at him while he is talking. Every time that Pip nods at Aged during their conversation Aged gets
He undergoes a contrasting change of character, kind, ambitious and in some cases, immature. Young Pip is a gentle boy who treats people with kindness. His kindness goes out to help a convict, Magwitch, that he meets on the marshes. Pip is terrified at the sight of a man with a leg iron.
Through her attempts she replaces her daughter’s heart with ice and breaks young men’s hearts. In Dickens’ bildungsroman Great Expectations, Pip and Miss Havisham’s morally ambiguous characterization helps develop the theme, that one needs to learn to be resilient. The internal struggles that Pip experiences through the novel, reveal his displeasure to his settings and
In that way, it is possible to get a happy ending even after experiencing something similar to what Pip felt. In the end, Pip became friends with Estella, even after knowing that she was the cause for his change which lead to all his misery in life. A moral theme that was taught in Great Expectations is to not change yourself for anyone or any reason. It is important to always keep your individuality and not to be susceptible to being swayed by someone. Overall, everyone should be their own individual person and not change for
