Greed Depicted In Scrooge's In A Christmas Carol

This shows that ever since Scrooge had met the Ghost of Christmas Present, his perspective on poor people had changed. When Present was leaving, he showed Scrooge two dolls, Ignorance and Want, which symbolize Scrooge's sins, and how he is fixing them slowly by slowly. Finally, the First Woman said “If he wanted to keep ’em after he was dead, the wicked old screw, why wasn’t he natural in his lifetime? If he had been, he’d have had somebody to look after him when he was struck with Death, instead of lying gasping out his last there, alone by himself.” The Ghost had revealed the scenes of the death of a disliked character whose funeral was not attended by his loved ones but just local businessmen who are eager to possess his properties.

Ebenezer Scrooge is the greedy man in the novel who values his money more than anyone or anything. His greed has caused many people to dislike him, even his employees find him cruel and cheap. He begins to change, however, when he is visited by his dead partner Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that three other Spirits will be visiting him throughout the night, and will help convince him to change his ways.

Scrooge shows that he redeems himself, and proves that he's changed throughout the story, through his generosity to the poor, his generosity to Cratchet, and through his newfound love for christmas. Scrooge wakes up on Christmas Day in a joyous and delighted mood, “And will you have the goodness —-here Scrooge whispered in his ear.(66)” When Ebenezar is approached by the portly men he gives them lots of shillings to help them and the other poor out.

Before meeting the ghosts, Scrooge could be described as greedy because he doesn’t give regard to the feelings of others, but afterward, Scrooge could be described as selfless because he grows to not hate Christmas and becomes more accepting of others.

When Scrooge sees the Ghost, he is scared by its frightening appearance, but he knows that the Spirit’s lessons are important. An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy. " This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature.

One night, in a dream, he is warned by his deceased friend, Marley, that three spirits would come to him. The first spirit is the spirit of Christmas past, and it shows him an event from his past. In the event, Scrooge is seen leaving his lover because she is too poor. Scrooge regrets this decision greatly. The next spirit tells him about the present, and it shows him how his employee, Bob Cratchit, is suffering.

The ghost of Christmas present took Scrooge to a place in London where people who were less fortunate lived At a lighthouse, two men “joined hands over the rough table at which they sat, and they wished each other a Merry Christmas” (Dickens 6.1). Those people had to work on Christmas, but they made the best of it and had their own Christmas. The ghost of Christmas Present also took Scrooge to his nephew’s house. At his nephew’s house, they were playing a game and Scrooge’s nephew was thinking of something while the other had to figure out what it was. He was thinking of “a savage animal, an animal that growled and grunted sometimes, and lived in London.”

He tells scrooge the path he is taken will lead to a bad afterlife. Scrooge is later visited by three more ghosts. They each take him to show him his wrong doings, and Scrooge sees his past, present, and future Christmases. He was warned to change his actions to make his future brighter, and a better afterlife. During his time with the spirits, he learned to be a better man and respect the world he lives in.
