With about 80% of it being cover in ice caps and glaciers, Greenland is the biggest island in the world. In the 10th century, Vikings from Iceland arrived to the island. Since 1979, Greenland was admitted under Danish parliament to be self-governed. The native people in Greenland are the Inuit. The main languages include Greenlandic, Danish, and some English. The island expands to 1660 miles long and 650 miles wide. Greenland is known for its vast ice sheet, which is has a capacity of 10,000 feet. The island sits inside the arctic circle. Scientists have insisted that Greenland’s Ice Sheets have shown signs of melting at a dangerous rate, not knowing if it is long-term effect causing it. Ice sheets usually break off and end out in the water. …show more content…
The article, Climate change and forest fires synergistically drive widespread melt events of the Greenland Ice Sheet, spoke about the different effects on the ice when the climate changed or there was a forest fire. The article, Concentrations and mass size distributions of particulate trace elements at summit, Greenland: Impact of boreal forest fires, included facts on the different chemical elements “affected by emissions from boreal forest fires” (Maenhaut, Hillamo, Mäkelä, Jaffrezo, Bergin and Davidson,1997, pg. S565) The article, High northern latitude forest fires and vegetation emissions over the last millennium inferred from the chemistry of a central Greenland ice …show more content…
Forests are not yet resistant to the troubles caused by humans, and only humans can prevent that themselves. There are three main components that a fire needs before it is started: oxygen, a heat source, and fuel. Oxygen is the air humans breathe. Heat sources is the foundation of a fire. Heat sources include lightning, hot winds, even something as little as a cigarette. Fuel includes the combustible substances within the area, trees and grass. The best way to reduce forest fires is to reduce the use of heat sources within the area. First way to reduce forest fires is the enforce “no smoking” within forest premises. After someone smokes, that person has a habit of throwing it on the ground. In the forest, if a person throws a cigarette on the ground, it can definitely start a fire. There should be laws to support this claim and if a person is found, they should be fined. Another way to reduce forest fires is to prevent camp fires. Camp fires are fun during camping trips, but one wrong move can set the whole forest on fire. Many people who start the fires may not even have any knowledge on the fire. People are careless and are not careful of their surroundings, preventing camp fires will prevent a possible
They can be natural, accidental, incendiary, or undetermined. Natural fires can begin because of nitrogen levels in soil, lightning strikes, or dry conditions. Accidental fires are caused by situations such as gas leaks or candles being left burning. Incendiary fires are set on purpose with the intention to cause damage or death. Many times these are fueled by flammable liquids such as gasoline.

First off the weather is so cold there that they have igloos as houses. That means that they can use their surrounding ice and snow to build a home that can stay there even through the summer. The Inuit can also build houses out of wood but it is very rare to see in a village because there are not a lot of trees in the arctic for them to cut down and build as houses, plus it takes more effort and work when they could just have an igloo and get other more important things done. Next thing that is different between the other two tribes is that the Inuit think that they are the most important barometer in the world because what happens in the world, like global changes, always happen there first. Therefore we can figure out what’s gonna happen to us in the next few years from the information based off of the arctic.
This paper will investigate the role of forest health and climate change in changing fire behavior. The paper will explore how human impact has changed fire, and what measures scientists, managers, and practitioners can take to reverse the damage and bring the regions forests back to more
Forest fires are uncontrolled fires in nature. They happen all over the world. Forest fires may be beneficial to many organisms in the environment. Forest fires burn the smaller, weaker, and low growing plants. This allows the other plants to grow healthier, without smaller ones using up their resources.
Ever since mankind initially began building structures out of wood rather than stone, fire and its effects have been a part of the knowledgeable development. Therefore, since the dawn of man, from the early beginnings to the present, fire has been a constant threat, and every era has illustrations of firefighting at its most intense. Fire Departments are filled with extraordinary stories of heroism, tragedy, and textbook examples of overcoming adversity. Fire is a living, consuming, deadly and defiant enemy.
In Nunavut there is prevailing and widespread belief among hunters that climate changes are already well under way. Here, they now see an alarming melting of sea ice earlier in the spring and a later freeze –up in the fall, all due to global warming. There is now also the appearance of flora and fauna, never before seen in the region. There is widespread general agreement among the population that there are climate changes occurring here now and these changes are becoming a source of growing local concern. Nunavut’s capital Iqaluit, population about 4300, the old Frobisher Bay, is now the largest town in Canada’s entire arctic.
The forests always had occasional fires for as long as there had been a forest, but the frequency and the severity of man-made fires resulted in a negative environmental impact as well as social discontent over forest depletion. Large scale fires result in a loss of topsoil. The hot temperatures reached in large fires burns away the topsoil and organic material in the soil that is vital to the health of the forest. Less vegetation as a result of forest fires doubles the amount of runoff flowing into mountain streams, and increases the speed at which snow melts and fills streams. Effects such as these can have unpredictable effects on the environment.
Fire is one of the symbols that is shown in the very first scene of the movie. The large flames of the house fire that erupted when those on the reservation decided to celebrate 4th of July are shown and throughout the movie multiple representations of fire are used. In the first, and biggest fire or the movie, Thomas’ parents perish in the fire and a younger Thomas is saved by Arnold. However, Arnold says that he didn’t meant to save him. From then on throughout the movie, fire has been used in situations were liberation is occurring in so way or shape.
I am against prescribed burning because it alters plant community structure, and it can help spread weeds and increase the erosion rates of steep slope soils. It also removes much of the ground and near ground habitat structure, and makes life very difficult for small mammals and some reptiles. I believe that most of this wildlife dies because it has no where else to go. By removing leaf litter off the forest floor it interrupts soil formation process. Plant matter that would otherwise break down into soil humus is instead turned to ash.
Sources of fuel must be kept tidy and away from sources of ignition where possible. Keeping the work setting tidy and picking up any rubbish which could be considered fuel will prevent the fire from spreading as quickly, installing and maintaining smoke alarms and fire doors also alerts members of staff to the fire risk and enables them to use any fire suppression equipment that has been
Arctic ice reflects 80 percent of the sunlight back into space. As sea ice melts there will be more sunlight hit the ocean which increase the temperature of the ocean and cause raise of sea level. Satellite observations show that Arctic sea ice concentrations have significantly decreased over the last 25 years. Submarine observations also suggest that the Arctic ice pack has thinned dramatically in the last 20 to 30 years. As the sea ice melts the sea level increase.
Canada is a very unique place with an interesting culture, intriguing history, and a wide variety of physical features that make up its geography. It is located north of the United States and also shares some physical features with this country. Canada's history and culture is of Native Canadian and European influence, with French dominating the country's culture. Canada today is a developed country with a strong economy and democratic government. Canada is the second largest country in the world with a location that is far north, with cold climates and rich natural resources.
Recently, many wildfires have taken place throughout the United States. Some of these wildfires are started intentionally, unintentionally, or start on their own as brush fires. Either way, wildfires are damaging to our environment. Now, scientists have been tracking and recording air quality levels before, during, and after wildfires and they are concluding that smoke from wildfires are tipping air quality numbers to unhealthy and dangerous levels. Most Importantly, Wildfires are damaging to our environment.
Aside from deforestation, wildfires affect habitat of the environment population and distribution of species after incident is not the same. It poses risks to human life and health due to heavy smog released in the atmosphere that can cause respiratory diseases. Damages the
