Levi Yates Ms. Ring English 10 Communications 08-02-2023 Gun Usage in the United States Guns can be used in the wrong way, and the reasoning behind gun misuse is not as well known. It is possible to see gun abuse and misuse caused by a lack of security around guns, the rash decision to consider gun usage to fix any one person’s problems, and one’s race or culture. Not only that, but gun violence and the factors behind gun violence are also relatable to real-world cases in the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Gun usage in violence is determined by many things and has causes which are caused by secondary causes. In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, gun usage is disliked but doesn’t go unmentioned, and may also be hinted …show more content…
According to the Washington Post, 76% of school shooters gain access to the weapons and guns used during a school shooting from homes, where weapons are easily accessible, and much less likely to be securely stored. This poses to be a very large threat, as that essentially shows how children have easy access to dangerous guns, and in the hands of irresponsible people, may pose a threat to the safety of others. Furthermore, as stated by Quandl (Owned by the Nasdaq,) “In 2012, 45% of households had possession of a gun.” This percentage shows how 9/20 children may be influenced by parents or guardians to take advantage of the weapons possessed in this house, and the environment in which raised the child may factor into potential gun usage and abuse by the child. From data taken in 2011 regarding gun usage, “According to the FBI, guns are by far the preferred murder weapon in the US, featuring in 8,583 of 12,664 murders in 2011” (Quandl). Essentially, guns made up nearly three out of four murder cases for 2011, which may also be caused due to the influence of guns in homes, and usage and encouragement to use guns by parents or guardians. That goes without saying, Guns are not kept in the right environment and are not held securely or used properly, which will influence children in gun-owning households, or others of gun-owning …show more content…
Well, as studies shown by the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, the main root causes of gun violence include poor Income equality, poverty, underfunded public housing, under-resourced public services, underperforming schools, lack of opportunities, and among other things, easy access to firearms. This really plays into how gun abuse is not just encouraged by one’s mental state, but instead is built up by one’s surroundings. Also stated by the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, exposure to gun violence is generally caused by PTSD, Antisocial behavior, Depression, stunted brain development, alcohol & substance abuse/use, and an increased likelihood to engage in violence. Arguably, some may say these are what causes gun violence, but most of these causes of gun violence are generally caused or influenced by something else, like one’s surroundings and environment. From the National Alliance on Mental Illness California, “The overwhelming majority of people with mental illnesses are not violent. Most people with mental health conditions will never become violent, and mental illness does not cause most gun violence. In fact, studies show that mental illness contributes to only about 4% of all violence, and the contribution to gun violence is even lower” (namica). Mental illnesses are rarely seen in cases of gun violence and are not what should be what people determine gun abuse cases to be caused by. The
So roughly 33,880 people die each year from gun violence. 11,564 people are murdered, 21,037 people kill themselves, 544 people are killed unintentionally, 468 are killed by police intervention, 267 die but intent is not known. Out of the 33,880, 2,647 are kids. This means that 1,565 children and teens are murdered, 907 children and teens kill themselves, 116 children and teens are killed unintentionally, 27 are killed by police and 32 die but the intent was unknown, keep in mind that these deaths are only done with guns, no other objects, The numbers would be much higher if we included other weapons and/or
Guns don 't kill people but it is people who kill people you need someone to pull that trigger in order for the gun to shoot. Multiple studies show that the higher the percentage of people who own guns the greater gun related
“Guns do not kill people, the mentally ill do,” said conservative commenter Anne Coulter. Is there a common link between mental disorders and massive shootings? It is very complicated to prove that mental illness caused any massive shootings, and to prove that if they had the right psychiatric attention that they would not have committed these horrific mass shootings crimes. The Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was done by a man named Adam Lanza in Newtown Connecticut in December of 2012.
Suddenly this leads to the chance that the weapon could end up in the wrong hands with a student securing it or the assailant finding it and increasing his or her weapon power. Some think that innocent children would not touch a gun or know how to use it, but Ken Corbett (2013), an assistant professor of psychology at the New York University, proclaims, “Kids get their hands on guns, and they know how to use them” (para. 7). As a matter of fact, Corbett also includes a 2010 FBI homicide statistic in his article: “The most up-to-date FBI homicide data indicate that of the 1,448 children who died as a result of gun violence in 2010, 165 of those deaths were at the hands of other children” (para. 7). A little over eleven percent of those deaths were caused by other children, nonetheless, those 165 deaths could have been avoided if the guns were secured or not
The article The Role of Health and Mental Health Care Providers in Gun Violence Prevention written by Ariel A. Williamson and Nancy G. Guerra talks about health and mental care providers can educate families and students about gun safety and the sole purpose of preventing any involvement in rage shootings. The article analyzes development risk factors, as well as the community around them, that could lead youth to gun violence. First, the authors discussed how firearm injuries are higher in states where gun ownership is more prevalent and less restricted. They highlight how having firearms at home is not a direct cause of death but failing to safely secure a gun is a known risk for incidents like school shootings.
Many people believe that the main cause of mass shootings are the people who are doing it have a mental health problem, and sometimes they might even be right, but not everyone who has been involved in a mass shooting has had mental health problems. “...data shows that, at most, only around 5 percent of crimes in the U.S. are performed by people with mental illness and that the percentage is the same for violent crimes (link is external)—which means that 95 percent of violent crimes are committed by non-mentally ill individuals” (Psychology Today). There are cases that support that some people have had severe mental health issues, such as schizophrenia. Yet, there are also cases that prove there is very little evidence linking mental health and mass shootings together. There are very few mental illnesses that would make a person want to go and commit such a murder.
Also in another article, Goldberg said, “ Guns are responsible for roughly 30,000 deaths a year in America; more than half of those deaths are suicides. In 2010, 606 people, 62 of them children younger than 15, died in accidental shootings” (Goldberg). Gun needs to be in control due to increasing of shootings, suicide, and
The thought of a mass shooting happening puts fear into the mind of human beings, and the thought of possibly putting a stop to them by providing better mental health services to people may be a soothing thought to people. But like abortion and gun control, Everyone has an opinion that can’t be ignored on the topic. There’s people who think that mental health issues causes the mass shootings, and then there’s the people who beg to differ and think that mental health doesn’t play a role in them(mass shootings) at all and think that people use the mental health as a reason to justify the shootings. Now we come to the million dollar question, Is mental illness the reason for mass shootings? One thing is for sure, Rampage Violence needs a new type of
Mental health and gun violence are two of the most pressing issues facing our society today, and their intersection is a topic that demands our urgent attention. Mental health and gun violence are two complex issues that are often linked in public debate. While many factors contribute to gun violence, mental health is often cited as a key factor. However, the relationship between mental illness and gun violence is not straightforward, and there are many challenges to implementing effective policies in this area. After examining the statistics of mental health and gun violence, it is clear that stricter background checks should be performed for someone who wants to purchase a firearm.
“Among all high-income countries, the US accounts for 91 percent of firearms deaths for children up to age 14, a new Pediatrics article reports” (Michael B). This is a very big topic and most kids end up getting this from their environment and it mentally messes up a kid. This is why most of the U.S. has people with mentally ill problems, it's because they have a bad past and it causes them to have a mental disorder which ends up causing more mentally ill
It does not take long for a debate to arise after a school shooting to argue which side is to blame. However, the debate has done nothing but made it worse for the trend of school shootings as it typically results in nothing. With two opposing sides, they barely consider any reasonable solutions since they are more focused on worrying if the gun or the shooter is to blame for the death of hundreds of people. In an article written by the Gallups’ Lida Saad concluded, “According to two recent Gallup polls, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental-health system than from easy access to guns.” Gun advocates are in favor of this reasoning because they believe that the system is failing to identify mental health patients in regards to gun violence.
Although many of these shootings occur every year, there many steps that can be placed in order to prevent them from occurring in the future. Creating gun laws that provide better background checks on the buyer and family can help lessen the chances of a mentally ill person from obtaining a gun. Spreading awareness of a person with a mental illness-or generally spreading information of the many different mental illness- can also help prevent mass murders such as Sandy Hook from occurring. Finally, researching ways to prevent mental illnesses from forming can help prevent these violent crimes. If the blame is on the illness, why not find ways to cease them from affecting more people?
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
They can be used to defend and protect as well as to threaten and kill. Guns and crime go together. A study conducted by the American Journal of Public Health found that the legal purchase of a gun seems to be associated with an increased risk of violent death. Every year, Americans are shocked by numerous mass shootings and senseless acts of violence involving guns and weapons. And, every year around 100,000 people are shot among which 18,000 are children and teens (Lane, 131).
Much of the criminal activity that takes place today is heavily related to the lack of treatment for mental illness. According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 60% of shooter in mass shootings that took place in the United States after 1970 displayed symptoms of acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their inhumane acts. I am sure that most of you are aware of the Sandy Hook shooting that took place on December 12, 2012. The perpetrator, Adam Lanza took the innocent lives of 20 students as well as the lives of 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Lanza had displayed key signs of mental illness as young as the age of three.
