Harry Truman Executive Order 9981

Many African-Americans felt it was time to fight the tyranny of oppression within their own country like they were fighting it in Europe. Racism was still prevalent, but the African-Americans’ participation in the war led to the Fair Employment Practices Commissions, whose job it was to ensure that companies did not discriminate based on color. In places like Shreveport, who refused to abide by the FEP, they lost defense contracts because they did not want to be bullied to hire African-Americans. Despite this, many African-Americans were hired to do jobs that would normally go to a white man because of a labor shortage. There was also a bid to stop them from voting.

Truman, Eisenhower, and the American Citizen The purpose of this essay is to highlight the similarities and differences of the decisive actions taken by President Harry Truman (1945 to 1953) and President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953 to 1961) when confronted with two pivotal issues of their administration. Those issues were civil rights for African Americans and the cold war. This essay will also highlight how American citizens responded to the issues during the period from 1945 to 1961.

Annabelle Wintson Bower History 8A March 12, 2018 Title Although the slavery was abolished in 1865, the rights given to African Americans were not nearly equal to those of white Americans. After slavery was abolished, inequality in American society ran high, and many laws were put in place to restrict the rights and abilities of African Americans. Some laws include the Jim Crow Laws (1870 to 1950s) and the Supreme Court Ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) that ruled that there could be “separate but equal” facilities and services for people of color and white Americans.

African Americans still had a struggle even when the war ended until they had equal rights. In the 1900 's schools businesses local streets and restrooms the blacks were classified as second class citizens. In 1909 a group of prominent black and white people created a group called the national association for the advancement colored people their was to increase racial equality. In 1955 a school opened were blacks and whites could go together; causes peaceful marches and protest.

The nation’s mindset revolved around white supremacy, so African Americans were never viewed as human beings, rather, they were viewed as property and white people despised them. White males did not have any respect towards African Americans because they were considered property, so they were put to work as slaves. Once slavery was abolished and president Andrew Johnson heard that congress was planning to grant formerly enslaved people to be viewed as citizens through the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, he immediately vetoed the bill. Johnson was a racist and former slave owner who said, “this is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am president, it shall be a government for white men.” The president was the person that

The Tuskegee Airmen, faced racial discrimination in a segregated military, but was given the technical and tactical skills to be pilots and officers when due to their skin color; they were never allowed to fly prior to WWII. The Tuskegee Airmen proved to American society that “no discrepancy existed between the effectiveness of properly trained black and white soldiers.” On July 26, 1948, President Truman issued an executive order that outlawed racial segregation in the United States Armed Forces. During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big topic and controversy with all of the United States. It was quite clear that African Americans did not get treated the same way that whites did. It had been ruled that it was constitutional to be “separate but equal”, but African Americans always had less than the whites did. For example, the schools that they had were run down, and had very little classrooms, books, and buses. Martin Luther King had a large role in the Civil Rights Movement, as did Malcolm X, and others.

Nevertheless, the protracted journey for the African-Americans to achieve equality was far from over. At the end of the Civil War, the Southern states passed “Black Codes” in 1865, restricting the lives of freed slaves and forcing them to work in low wage jobs. Executive Order 8802 worked to eliminate racial bias in the workplace, however discrimination will always exist. However, with the help of Executive Order 8802, as a nation, the United States has accomplished many things in relation historically. Historical moments like The Civil Rights Movement in the 60’s forever changed the United States. African Americans had been free for almost a century, but did not have civil rights. Executive Order 8802 impacted The Civil Rights Movement as it gave African Americans a voice in the workforce and socially as well.

World War II was fought due to the persecution and execution of multiple minorities such as Jewish people. gypsies, the disabled, and homosexuals. However, the irony of this event is that while America was fighting for the rights of others overseas, there was an immense amount of discrimination happening right here in the United States. African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented minorities were all put at a large disadvantage in terms of economic and social opportunity. While the United States army needed more soldiers to fight in the war, African Americans who were fighting for their country in the military faced immense discrimination from Caucasian soldiers.

Truman’s Decision President Truman was justified in his decision to drop the atomic bombs in Japan. Truman faced many pros and cons of his decision, however, the pros outweighed the cons. There were very few alternatives to the extreme, the casualties in the Pacific were growing and the rate the war it would save lives. Although, there were many lives lost Truman made the right decision for his country.

As the war continued, in 1943, a quota was imposed allowing the number of African American males serving in the armed forces to be no greater than their numbers in the overall population, about 10.6 percent. President Roosevelt’s refusal to allow a mixed army prompted anger and disbelief in the African-American community. George Schuyler opposed the Jim Crow army and stated “Our war is not with Hitler in Europe, but against Hitler in America. Our war is not to defend democracy, but to get a democracy we’ve never had.”
