A novel can influence our understanding of history. I strongly agree with this statement. A historical novel is a novel that has as its setting a period of history and attempts to convey personal experiences and historical events to historical fact. The novel Briar Rose (1992) written by Jane Yolen is an example of a historical novel. Briar Rose influences our understanding of the Holocaust and allows a reader to gain an understanding of how a human who went through the Holocaust deals with and shares their experiences. They also gain an understanding of that period in time, how people were treated during that period in time and what went on during that period of time.
When reading a novel it is more enjoyable to read than reading a factual report or article. It has been proven that if you find something enjoyable you learn and understand the topic better and in more detail compared to if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. From my own experiences I can relate to the evidence. Since a novel is more enjoyable than a factual text the novel can influence the readers understanding of history. “Happy-ever-after is a fairy-tale notion, not history. I know of no woman who escaped

In Briar Rose, Gemma, one of the main characters repeatedly tells the fairy-tale “Briar Rose” with her own twist to her grandchildren. She does this because she is trying to teach her grandchildren about her past but can only teach them through the fairy-tale as it is all that she can remember. This is how Gemma deals with her past and the pain caused from it. Also in Gemma’s version of the fairy-tale, when the prince kisses her she is the only person who awakes however in the actual fairy-tale everyone awakes. This is a metaphor which represents the pain of the survivors who have to continue life by themselves. When the reader has finished the novel they can understand the meaning behind the
The hero’s journey may be old, but it is what allows us to understand the unfamiliar, the new and the scary. Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, used the hero’s journey style of storytelling, which made their story easier to understand, even with all of the detail and description. One example of this is shown through the character Clarisse, the Herald in the story. One morning, when Clarrise walked Montag with him to the train station, they talked, and she could only bring up thought provoking questions and ideas, unknown to this world, and even simple questions like this, “‘Are you happy?’ she said.
I believe that stories from the past are not outdated or worthless, but they contain valuable information and lessons that are still relevant to this day. We can still learn from what was written long ago and we can take away important truths that will help move forward our society. However, stories from the past are also not useful if that is the only thing you accept as truth. The stories have valuable lessons, but they also are from the past. If the society won’t learn the lessons of the past and move forward in the world, they aren’t functioning well.
Fiction is needed to develop other forms of thinking and to expand creativity. Fiction novels could help students view things from different perspectives. It may help us in a similar situation from the book for example,in the book “The hate u give “ by Angie Thomas there is a situation with police brutality and the way he handled it can inspire others to do the same or we could see where it went wrong and not do that. A young African American male is shot and killed by a white policeman. Garden Heights residents come together in the face of unspeakable tragedy which reflects the strong sense of community felt by those who live in Garden Heights.
Non fiction novels are great ways to make people aware of real life issues that happen everyday. People face poverty issues, racial issues, and environmental issues everyday of their life and are affected more than others. For example the environment is affected because of the different things people do in their everyday lives, like things that deal with fossil fuels and gas. Another example is race and how people are treated because of their specific race or religion. Issues like these are happening all around the world and most likely can be found in a nearby non-fiction novel.
Fiction offers the reader a wide range of life lesson that brings issues we encounter today. Fiction also helps
Marie Hull Mr. Santini Global H 16 March 2015 How Religion in Rome Influenced the Development of Culture When most students and even some scholars study history, they view the past as just a series of facts and occurrences. And unfortunately, this is more or less the only way we are able to view history, simply because it has all happened many many years ago. But if we were able to look at history the way we look at our lives today, as not just a series of facts, but as a real era with real, living people, then we can gain an enormous amount of insight into what a certain period in history was truly like. We can begin to view history this way by studying how one event influences another.
The rose bush grew just outside the prison doors and has been there for a very long time. It is seen as imperfect because, while it may look beautiful, each rose has its own thorns. Hawthorne explains, “It may serve, let us hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow” (Hawthorne 46). This quote shows that the rose bush can be interpreted differently by every reader. It can be seen as good or bad because it is by the prison and has thorns, but it also has beauty.
Fiction books can have a great impact with their readers by talking about what happens in our society. Secondly reading fiction books is really beneficial because it helps you be more knowledgeable. There are more than 15,000 gang homicides across the United States. Luis, pg. 83, “ she was just too tired pulling me out of jail cells, of getting reports from school about the fights i’d been in, of expecting a call from a hospital or morgue “. This issue is relevant to the world because it can save someone's life and it prevents readers to getting involve with bad things.
This is shown when the characters in this novel speak out against a concept they know nothing about. Therefore, the literary terms an author uses can make an immense impact to the connections the reader makes to a novel, and help to shape a theme that is found throughout

Science has proven that reading can provoke positive changes in us as human beings. Annie Murphy Paul is the author of the article ‘Your Brain on Fiction’ published on March 17, 2012. Annie explains how researchers have discovered that reading can initiate different parts of the brain, this is the reason why sometimes literature can make the reader so engaged and attached to a piece of writing. Research also explains how reading has the ability to produce activity in our brain’s motor cortex. Finally, Annie explains how reading fictional pieces can change how you interact with other individuals.
In his essay Bakhtin provides an analysis of the relationship between individual utterances and the ideologically charged forces that affect them, he writes: “The dialogic interaction of a word among other words (of all kinds and degrees of otherness) creates new and significant artistic potential in discourse, creates the potential for a distinctive art of prose, which has found its fullest and deepest expression in the novel.” (275) i.e. there are dialogic relations between the narrator and the writer, the author and the character, the story and other stories, culture and text and society and text. A novel is in fact characterized by heteroglossiawhere many voices (writer, character, society) are mixed which gives originality to the text.

Individual Speech “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one. ”- George R. R. Martin Imagine a world without books. We would probably be 200 years behind, and nothing that is around us today would’ve developed yet.
It is like this that books expand our knowledge, conception and consciousness of the world around us. You may say that nowadays there are other ways to do that, like the TV or Google, but books allow you to experience the same story form your own perspective, values, ideas and from your own feelings. Through reading, you introduce yourself to new things, new information, and even new ways to solve a problem. Secondly, reading helps us to
