“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of their strength, but by the strength of their heart.” A hero is a person that does something to help or they can also save someone 's life. One example of, being a hero is Darry because he takes care of Ponyboy and Sodapop. Another example, of being a hero is Johnny when he saved Ponyboy and the little kids. A further example, of being a hero is Ponyboy when he also saved the little kid’s life and when he wanted to take the blame for killing Bob. Yes any of the greasers can be a hero by just doing one little thing and they don’t even realize that they are a hero. Darry is a hero because after his parents died, he had to take care of his siblings Ponyboy and Sodapop. The text states on page two it states “ Darry’s hard and firm and rarely grins at all. But then, Darry’s gone through a lot in his twenty years, grown up too fast.” This shows that he had to take care of his siblings when his parents had died. Darry is also a hero when he took care of Ponyboy when he was sick. In page 56 it states “ I’m drowning, I thought, they’ve gone too far …” and “ I killed him,” he said slowly. “I killed that boy.” This shows where Johnny saved Ponyboy from drowning. Johnny is also a hero when he helped get the little kids get out of the church that was on fire. He didn’t realise how much he cared for them and how hard Darry worked to live together as a family because the brothers knew they would get separated into boys' homes. Ponyboy loved Sodapop, he was his favourite brother and person, to him, Sodapop was his only family left and was affectionate. It wasn’t until Ponyboy was in the hospital waiting room when he saw Darrel crying because of him. “Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me.” Even if they had argued almost everyday, Darry was only looking out for his younger brother because no matter how much they fight, they will always be family.
After Ponyboy got rescued from the burning church and ended up in the hospital his brothers came to see him. Ponyboy and Darry fought an abundance of times, so Pony thought Darry disliked him. Ponyboy realizes that is not true when he and Darry embrace, “That was his silent fear then-of losing another person he loved. . . . I listened to his heart pounding through his T-shirt and knew everything was going to be okay. I had taken the long way around, but I knew I was finally home.
As George Bernard Shaw once said, "you cannot be a hero without being a coward". In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton many characters think they are cowards but act like heroes and have heroic attributes in their own ways. Three characters are heroic in The Outsiders are Sodapop, Darry, and Dally. Soda pop is a hero because he keeps everyone happy and stops his brothers fights. Soda is always the middle man in fights so he is the one who has to brake them up, like in chapter 3 where Ponyboy got home really late and Darry was yelling at him and Soda had to step in and defend Ponyboy.

Darry has an extremely serious personality and loves Ponyboy with tough love. All three show love in different ways, but they still do love. Ponyboy is a hero. He always thinks of others before himself. At home Johnny is being abused by his abusive parents. He doesn’t get to feel the affection of a parents love. Somedays he even sleeps outside weather it was freezing cold or really hot. Another thing Johnny did was he rescued Ponyboy in the park when the socs tried to drown Ponyboy in the fountain.
After that, Ponyboy finds himself in a situation that he personally can’t back out of. It’s the fire at the church. Ponyboy, starts running in to help save the children, but when he turns around, he sees Johnny. “Hey Ponyboy,” Johnny says. Johnny was following Ponyboy into the fire to help save the kids.
