Within the 1800’s European Explorers forced their way through the insides of western and central Africa. Along the west coast of Africa, European nations traded for slaves, ivory, and gold. Africa was under full assault by the 1800s, as European nations competed with one another for control of the continent. Europe wanted to imperialism (take over) Africa and the forces (what they did) that helped them succeed is the new technology, Nationalism, and lastly the most important industrialism. Europeans invented many different things in order to help them take control of Africa. Their inventions fed into an imperial ideology, explained by Social Darwinism, which stated that Europeans were superior to the people of the rest of the world. Many argue that technology was one of the key aspects of European Imperialism world wide. For example, the Europeans used inventions of transportation, science and medicine, and weapons. The most helpful invention that helped them accomplish their goal would be the, “Method of getting quinine from cinchona tree bark,” (a treatment for the disease malaria). Another example is found in a variety of sources states, “The Industrial Revolution led to many discoveries and inventions that helped Europeans take over Africa,” (Document C). Without the Europeans being nationalist they would have no motivation or reason to imperialize Africa. Nationalism made Europe want to have the most power. It is stated, “Make your country again a royal throne of kings;... She must found colonies as fast and as far as she is able, formed of her most energetic and worthiest men. (Ruskin). This is an example of what they had to do to become the strongest. Nationalism is a patriotic effort to make their country better. And that is what Europe did, which helped them take over Africa.
