How Did Jackie Robinson End The Jim Crow Law

Jackie Robinson, The Dark Destroyer, The Colored Comet, Jackie the Robber. He was the first African American baseball player to play in the M.L.B. I chose to do my report on Jackie Robinson because I thought that he was very interesting and different. He was a baseball legend in my book. I have heard his name a bunch of times, but I did not know anything about him. Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Rural Georgia.

Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. Jackie died on October 24, 1972. He died just months after the Dodgers retired his number 42. The cause of his death was heart failure and diabetes. He would be 99 today.

An icon is a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something. This man was not only an Icon in baseball, but a civil rights leader, a father of three, and a role model for all young adults. Jackie Robinson was a small town boy who had big-time dreams. He was from a small city in Georgia and always had outstanding athletic abilities. Not only was Jackie a baseball player, but he also played a major role in breaking the color barrier.

Jackie Robinson is known to be one of the most influential people in baseball and in society. He eternally changed the aspect of American history. It was unusual to have a colored person be treated equally as a white person during the time of the 1900s. He was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 and later moved to Pasadena, California to pursue a better life. He came from a poor family of sharecroppers in the South and was the youngest of five.

He was called names and was discriminated against but chose not to fight back. Jackie Robinson has opened the door for

Jackie Robinson shows that everyone can be emotionally and mindly changed of how people react to other races during that time. The people in the society was having a hard time to adapt with Robinson joining the major leagues in baseball. “The integration of major-league baseball proceeded without critical incident. Though Robinson was scorned by some of his teammates, was harassed by enemy bench jockeys, and received a steady diet of fastballs close to his head; he faithfully abided by his promise to Rickey to turn the other cheek.” (Swaine).This quote proves that even how many people do not like

(Robinson, letter) and (Wilson,web). Robinson’s impact on society portrayed his legacy as a great one and made people realize that he was a hero, but also that everyone can be a hero. Jackie Robinson truly has left an impact as the man who broke the color barrier. Withstanding all hate that was thrown at him and doing it while keeping a smile on his face and inspiring others. Jackie Robinson is a hero of change because he was able to break the pro sports color barrier by signing the contract putting himself of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jackie Robinson fought to end segregation, and the rights for all people through many different ways. The most recognized and probably the biggest thing he did was transform all sports through being the first African American to play professional baseball. This did not only stop discrimination in baseball but this helped stop discrimination in all sports together. After his impact on baseball he wasn't done there, he join the National Association for the advancement of colored people. He became the chairman for the freedom fund and later raised over a million dollars.

The third reason why Jackie Robinson was so impactful was because his influence on African Americans. In the text it says "Robinson also became a vocal champion for African-American athletes, civil rights, and other social and political causes. In July 1949, he testified about discrimination before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1952, he publicly called out the Yankees as a racist organization for not having broken the color barrier five years after he began playing with the Dodgers" (biography.com). This quote shows how he courageously spoke out for all African American rights.

Jackie Robinson continued to make an impact on civil rights even after his retirement from baseball. With his life in baseball winding down, Jackie ramped up his off- field involvement in advancing racial justice (Schutz 116). He continued to help and make his mark as one of the most influential people in helping blacks achieve their civil rights. Jackie was very involved in the Little Rock Nine School crisis which was an early effort to begin desegregation of southern high schools (Schutz 117). Dwight D Eisenhower, the President at that time, told Jackie that all blacks needed was patience for de-segregation to occur.

Jackie Robinson not only made impacts on the field that were monumental, but he made impacts off the field that were equally as important. Jackie helped presidents get elected, get kids off the streets and into the most prestigious schools there is, and most importantly he broke the black color barrier in baseball. Jackie Robinson is one of the most influential people to ever live, he did things that people would dream about, he stood up for what he believed. To begin, Jackie’s biggest accomplishment was breaking the black color barrier on baseball, “ Jackie Robinson broke through the color barrier that kept blacks out of the Major League Baseball [MLB].

In 1947, Manager Branch Rickey, of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed Jack Roosevelt Robinson to play baseball on the Dodgers’ minor league team. From there, Jackie Robinson played his way to becoming the starting first-baseman of the Brooklyn Dodgers and helped lead the team to a division title. Robinson was the first negro ball-player to play on a Major League Ball Club, while this was an enormous accomplishment for all negro ball-players, it took its toll on Jackie. To Jackie, he was just a ball player.

Hard Working, Strong,and Committed are three words that people think of in connection to Jackie Robinson. Many people know who broke the color barrier in baseball,was jackie robinson, but he was so much more. As a normal kid, Jackie Robinson showed the world that anyone could make a positive change is you stay hard working, strong and committed. He left a legacy as a world changer. There were many racial remarks against Jackie, either physically, or he couldn't do anything about it.

Jackie Robinson challenged white America’s societal perception of African American at the time. “Robinson won Rookie of the Year in 1947. In later seasons, more African-Americans joined other teams in the Major Leagues, as Robinson continued to excel. His success gained him fans from all over the country.” (Mcbirney 14).

Many people try to change how they are to fit in . In school kids try to act cool, making up stories about themselves. Even if they don't try to change, other still judge them for fitting in or not trying. This is a problem now and back in times when color people were not accepted as equals. With this in mind, a great example is Jackie Robinson for his struggle to integrate.
