On 18 June 1812, president James Madison signed a declaration of war for what is now known as the War of 1812. There were many actions that led to the cause of this war, mainly including the maritime, economic, and territorial issues. Once the war had begun, there were many actions taken and lives lost during the invasions and battles until the war finally came to an end merely three year later. This war has been viewed as a lesson more than anything and even though it was not a very long war, it has impacted the countries that were involved, including Canada, and has helped bring us to where we are today. In 1807, Thomas Jefferson enforced the Embargo Act. This act made all exports from the U.S. illegal, therefore intending to force Britain and France to respect Americas rights during the Napoleonic Wars. The Embargo Act was intended to destroy the British and French economy, which it did not. In fact the Embargo actually helped British policy and it stopped any help the French may have received from American shipping. Brazil and the Spanish colonies had also just opened to British trade around the same time that the Embargo began, so their economy was unaffected. It also complimented Napoleon’s Continental system so the French were not affected either. On the other hand, the act severely affected New England and the south very hard which resulted in a depression that damaged the United States’ economy. Since the economy found itself to weaken, before long they found themselves to have an even weaker military than they had beforehand. The final important cause that called for war was America’s call for expansion both north and south. The Americans knew that Canada was Britain’s last foothold on the continent and they did not like the obvious support that the British in Canada was giving Indians of the Northwest, which proved to be a primary cause in the call to invade the country. Another factor that requested the conquest of Canada was the farmers wish to obtain the Canadian fields because …show more content…
The Americans devised a plan to take over Upper Canada first, considering the maritime provinces were protected by the British navy and lower Canada was too remote and was also protected by the fortress of Quebec. The Americans expected it to be incredibly simple to invade, in fact Thomas Jefferson claimed that it would be ‘a mere matter of marching’ for the capture of Canada. The British were badly outnumbered, but they were more prepared than the Americans had expected. The British Major-General Sir Isaac Brock had been pushing extreme defence measures before the war had officially been declared in order to prepare for the conflict. His most recognized effort was the idea of developing the policy towards making allies of the First Nations. Brock was disappointed that he only had about 1600 troops to fight but the Americans ended up losing so may of their own men that eventually the militia refused to cross into Canada. Once Brock was killed, a new American army came from Kentucky to try to retake Detroit and the were mauled by the British, Canadian, and First Nation force. Further attempts to invade Canada at this timer were abandoned and the only Americans remaining in Canada were prisoners of war. Eventually America struck again and there were more battles, one of which being the Battle of Lundy’s Lane. “The battle of Lundy’s Lane was among the bloodiest of the war. Both sides
(Second Document Summary)In the document, Felix GRundy, Battle Cry of the War Hawks, Grundy and some other Americans believed that some of the hostile actions made by some of the Northern Native Americans were influenced by the British. Grundy wanted to declare war on the British and drive them out of America completely. He also wanted to drive out the Native Americans to prevent them from causing more trouble. Besides driving out the British and Native Americans, Grundy’s other idea was that the United States should take control of Florida from Spain and claim Canada for America as well. Grundy Believed that, “this war, if carried out successfully, will have its advantages.”
Firstly, the effect of the Naval Stores Act was showing up in the condition of the American naval stores trade. Owing to the bounty system in this act, merchants could receive sufficient bounty through the American naval stores trade. Therefore, they regard this trade as profitable and began to deal with American naval stores. Secondly, the end of the War of the Spanish Succession activated the transatlantic commerce drastically. The end of the war caused the decline in the risk of the navigation in the Atlantic, which led the decrease in the
The Dominion of Canada purchased the Northwest Territory from Hudson Bay Company. Prime Minister John A. MacDonald decided a Federal Police Force was needed to establish governing authority in this huge territory. Reports of American Whiskey traders, especially those at Fort Whoop-Up, and the events that culminated the Cypress Hills Massacre was a big concern to bring law and order to this region. Planning began in the late 1800s. Creating a permanent force to safeguard Canada’s borders, posts and land.
pd.2 The War Of 1812 In the War of 1812, the Us went up against the greatest naval power in the world, Great Britain. In a conflict that would impacted on the young country’s future. Brock dressed the Canadian militia in British redcoats to make the appearance that there are more British regulars, whose powers were feared by the Americans. Brock also instructed Tecumseh’s Indian warriors to cross back and forth in front of the fort, which made the numbers of fighters visually increase. Furthermore, Brock strategically placed a letter, “accidentally” discovered by Hull, which stated that the Indians were savage and would be uncontrollable when put in combat. These deceptions allowed an easy victory to the British, involving minimal physical combat. From the Americans, the British captured approximately 2000 prisoners, a large sore of shot, flint, gunpowder, and supplies, and an unfinished ship.
The Embargo Act prohibited American ships from trading with foreign countries, which led to a decline in America’s economy. France had created a law declaring no trade with any neutral countries such as America, and Britain followed through soon after. American ships were being seized by both Britain and France and the men onboard the ships were forced into service in the foreign navy. Britain justified this action by saying, “Once an Englishman, always an Englishman.” Jefferson couldn’t just sit back during these disasters, but he didn’t want a war and wanted to keep AMerica out of conflict, so he created the Embargo Act in the hopes that it would affect France and Britain more than it would the United States.
General Winfield Scott, giving fifty-three years of military service with forty-seven of those years being a General, saw many military wars and conflicts. Notably, just four years from entering military service, he served in the War of 1812. He would also see combat in the Black Hawk War, Mexican-American War, Second Seminole War, and the beginning of the American Civil War. The War of 1812 was declared by President Madison on June 1st. President Madison did not like that Britain was interfering with trade nor the attacks on Indians, but the main reasoning to declare war was that British ships were seizing American seaman in American territory (History.com Staff, 2009).
Captain Campbell felt uneasy about the new rules and laws the British had put into place, knowing that this might upset the Native Americans. As tension grew there was talk of how the French and the Spanish were going to unite to push the British out of North America. This talk had gotten many Indians to prepare for war and to choose sides of the war that might become. Chief Pontiac had felt that he must stay loyal to the French who had shown him generosity and kindness.

a. The War of 1812 was very big and affected many groups of people. One of the reasons why it began was because of Jefferson’s eager decisions to get rid of the Indians and their responses towards that. “Reports that the British were encouraging Tecumseh’s efforts contributed to the coming of the War of 1812.” (Foner 318) The United States and Britain didn’t get along and there were many conflicts between them some of which were related to the Indians. Jefferson wanted the Indians gone and wanted control of their land.
The War of 1812 was declared because of many reasons. President James Madison had asked Congress to declare war against Great Britain with a message with the list of provocations by Great Britain. A few listed by Remini were “the British were impressing American seamen to help fight the war against Napoleon and seizing American
This was a victory for Americans over the Natives and would begin the war. After this victory, the War Hawks push for war increased. And in June of 1812 a declaration of war was signed by the United States. America began attacks in Canada and British Colonies, but would get nowhere with the pompous and overly-optimistic attitude that they had acquired. The U.S would face bad loss after bad loss that would result in them being pushed back over the canadian border.
”(From, mrnussbaum.com) Also from mrnussbaum.com, “Great Britain gave arms and support to Native Americans in the western frontiers who were attacking American settlers.” Another cause that leads to war was the British violations of maritime.
The war of 1812 was a conflict that involve the United States and the United Kingdom. During the Napoleonic Wars, the restrictions on the United States trade resulted in a British Blockade of allied ports which triggered the war. The British and Canadian support for the American Indians plan to resist westward expansion also prompted the war. This was a war that the United States did not want to get involved in due to a weak military force, but they had no other options. After trying to avoid the war, it eventually came anyways and continued until 1814.
