Gender roles affect how men and women are seen and contributes to the inequality of women. If men were not constantly seen as the “breadwinners” or “protectors,” women would not have to do things like fight for equal pay. If women were not forced into submissive roles, and jobs such as nursing (viewed as a common submissive role by stereotypes (How Nurses are portrayed in film)), it would be possible for men to hold such jobs and roles that are catered to women, without the backlash that accompanies such decisions. A simple way of putting is this; imagine if you were a robber. You robbed someone, and now you’re going to go to jail. Now if you think about that in the context of gender roles, one can see that if you believe gender roles do not negatively affect others, it would not only negatively affect others but affect your life as well. To those who believe gender roles do not inhibit the development of men and women, I ask you this: How do gender roles help you? You may believe you want your children to be raised in the right way, but I would argue that when you force gender roles on your kid, it causes them to grow up in the wrong way. Today, people still use offensive terms such as “f*ggot” in their everyday lives, but what exactly is wrong with being gay? Does it make you weak? Well, it, in fact, does not, but toxic masculinity makes it seem like it’s okay to say such words, when really it is negatively affecting other people. Similarly, “b*tch” is used when a woman might stand up for herself, which betrays the typical female gender role. The robber example works because it shows that by enforcing gender roles, you are not only affected, but other people are affected, and you are, per se, taking something away from them. Gender discrimination in the workplace continues to be a major problem in the workplace despite the passing of time since laws such as Title VII or the Equal Pay Act were enacted to combat the issue. Sexual or gender discrimination at work occurs whenever an individual is treated differently on account of their gender and may affect anything from hiring decisions to promotions. Relatedly, sexual harassment is a form of gender discrimination similarly prohibited by federal law.
It can impact how a person treats others, shaping an attitude towards society. In the essay Being A Man by Paul Theroux, the author writes “This version of masculinity is a little like having to wear an ill-fitting coat for one’s entire life (By contrast, I imagine femininity to be an oppressive sense of nakedness).” (2). This explains that the author is uncomfortable with the roles aligned with being a man. The tense feelings towards gender roles allows a person's attitude to change based on how they feel, creating a certain outlook on society.
We are taught these roles at a young age to help us better understand the difference between a boy and a girl, I understand how society sets these roles but I do not agree with them. Gender roles should not define who we should be as a person, little boys should feel comfortable to play with

Men have given the media this unrealistic image that women cannot fend for themselves, cannot do hard jobs, or cannot get as far in life as a man. Even in jobs, though a woman and a man may be in the same position, women “earn just 74 cents for every $1 a man earns” (CNNMoney). This is truly unfair, yet men today still say that women are “equal,” though it is obviously false. Women today, though they have more rights than in the 1800’s, are still not in the place we need to be in ranking with men. Women are still abused, sexually harassed and mistreated more than men because of their sex.
We need to be careful on what we teach our kids on gender roles. How do we learn gender roles? They are passed down to generation to generation. From the age 3 children are able to start becoming aware of the difference between girls and boys based on the action of the parent and the nature of the environment. Looking in from the outside, the journey of Women’s rights was a lengthy one, and it has come a significant way from what it began as. It was a long road to freedom that started with just a few women protesting together for change in the mid 1800’s to the large movement it is today. What started only as an effort to put women on equal footing with men in the voting realm blossomed into a full on fight against gender norms and independence through protesting, speeches, and gatherings.
