How Does Hale Change In The Crucible

Miller chose to have Hale change because of the guilt Hale holds as he watches all the people he initially thought worked with the devil be killed. In the beginning of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend John Hale was brought to Salem during Act one in order to look at Reverend Parris’s daughter, Betty. He is a doctor who examines others for signs of witchcraft, and then tries to find a way to rid the victim from witchcraft. He is from Beverly and has dealt with witchcraft prior to Salem. At first, he was convinced that witchcraft was painted all over Salem because he examined both Betty and Tituba while he was there.

Often in literature, a character’s relationship with another person or group changes. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, there is one change that is significant to the plot. In a small town, Salem, all of the townspeople believe that there are witches among them. Terrified, as well as paranoid, a court comes to Salem and starts weaving through everyone in the town convicting the good and the bad people. Reverend Hale was on the court until he realized that the system he believed to be fair and just was anything but.

In Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," Reverend John Hale is portrayed as a man of great faith who is called upon to investigate the mysterious occurrences in Salem, Massachusetts, during the witch trials of the late 17th century. Although Hale initially believes that he is doing God's work by rooting out the supposed witches in the community, he eventually comes to realize that the accusations are baseless and that innocent people are being condemned to death. In this essay, we will explore how Reverend Hale could have prevented the events in Salem by using his knowledge and authority to challenge the prevailing hysteria and superstition. Firstly, Reverend Hale could have used his knowledge of the Bible and his position as a respected member of the community to challenge the accusations of witchcraft.

Hale is confident in his work at first but later on he feels guilty for not seeing that some people are actually telling the truth. Hale is confident about his work in the witch trials.

Many aspects of one's life can change over time, people’s attitude, opinions, thoughts, the way they look, etc. There are times where people don't change. In literature and media most characters change and learn from their mistakes. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible like many plays and media, characters learn from the events that happen and change based on what happened. Reverend Parris, a character in the book, does not change, despite what events happened in Salem.

One key person in The Crucible with ideals that completely changed from the beginning is Reverend Hale. In the beginning Reverend Hale came in believing that he was the ultimate authority on witches. Later on in the story, Hale was shaken by the arrest of Rebecca and the eventual arrest of John where he quits the court. Hale at the end does not believe in religion, but tells others to have faith. Reverend Hale from the beginning to the end is almost a completely different person; this is shown by him coming into the story being the authority on how to find witches, then he is shaken greatly by Rebecca and John’s arrest, and finally by him not having religion but keeping faith.

Throughout The Crucible, during the Salem Witch Trials, Reverend Hale slowly changes from a ‘confident man with a plan’, to a haggard preacher who seems to be losing himself amongst the chaos of these colonial trials based off of lies. This is the moment when the confident Reverend Hale begins to crumble. Reverend Hale maintains his level-head and a degree of self-confidence, wishing for a more proper evaluation of the evidence. He remains much the way he came, level headed and confident, but now the people have broken into hysteria, and even judges of the court will not carry out his wishes. (pg. 103. The Crucible) Reverend Hale is accustomed to people listening to him, but this begins to change as fear, hysteria, and vengeance grips the town, and his good conscience forces him

The definition of morality is the principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad (Webster 1). In stories, characters have varied moralities like; John Proctor and Judge Danforth, Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams, and Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the characters to show how one's morality can be skewed because of the pressure and influence of society. John Proctor and Judge Danforth exemplify the difference of innocence in morality. Proctor is a well-liked man who has a distinct personality for himself (C. Lacovetti 1).

Towards the end, Hale changes from a person who carries his heavy written laws to a person who hates the court. During Act III, after Danforth arrested Proctor, Hale is so angry with the court that he yells, "I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court!” (Act 3, 120). The quote might seem really simple, but it is significant because Hale finally figures out that the court system is a failure to the society, and also figures out what he should be go after. As a result in Act 4 when Hale tries to convince Elizabeth to tell Proctor to confess, Hale says, “‘Beware, Goody Proctor –cleave to no faith when faith brings blood.

In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout  the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible.     In the beginning of the play (Acts 1 and 2), we focus on John Proctor and we know that he is a good puritan citizen, a hard-working farmer and who is a husband and father.

In the play, Hale said, "No man may longer doubt the powers of the dark are gathered in monstrous attack upon this village. There is too much evidence now to deny it" (Miller 171). Evidently, Hale thought that it was near impossible to ignore all the signs of evil. In act 2, his view remained the same, and when John Proctor proposed the idea of the accusations being false, Hale stood his ground and dismissed the idea completely. Hale said, "Only this consider: the world goes mad, and it profit nothing you should lay the cause to the vengeance of a little girl" (Miller 178).

Reverend Hale is the character that changes the most in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible because his feelings on witchcraft turns from full belief to unbelievable doubt, his thoughts on Proctor changes from thinking that he is evil to thinking that he is a good and honest man, and he switches from doing God’s work to doing the Devil’s. In the beginning of the play when Reverend is called to the town of Salem to see if the reason why Betty and Ruth are unconscious is due to witchcraft he brings with him many books. In the beginning acts, Hale was trusting the court more than John and was a big part of handling warrants of the accused individuals along with having much confidence in himself, his knowledge of witchcraft, and knowledge of witches in Salem.
