The Film Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, effectively presented the ideas of murder and schizophrenia through the use of characters, with the double-sided Norman Bates in particular, and visual techniques as well as sound techniques. The ideas of murder and schizophrenia were presented well in the movie "psycho" through the use of characters. The character of Norman Bates was the central character in the film and had a complex and differing personality. One moment he was shy, kind, lonely Norman Bates, a mother's boy, and the next he was a deadly jealous Mrs. Bates, his deceased mother. She yells and her hand hits a light bulb, sending it swinging back and forth casting short-lived shadows across the mostly decayed skull of Mrs. Bates, making her look almost alive, which of course she is, in Normans mind. Norman has revealed his mother no longer exists, her presence was kept alive in the mind of her son. This is cleverly portrayed in the film, with the voice-overs of Norman in conversation with his mother (himself) making us believe that she really does exist, and adding to the horror of the scene when we see who Mrs. Bates' really is. Hitchcock understood the importance of camera work and sound because he began his career making silent films.12 It is why he uses many close up shots so the audience can pay attention to specific details and the emotions on the character’s face. He does not rely on dialogue to tell the story. He uses sound to help convey the message of a scene.

The cook speaks with him and then he is soon picked up by a police officer, but when asked why he ran away from home he never gave away everything about his mother, he could have told the police officer everything she has done but he kept quiet and was picked up by his father and they just stated it was a misunderstanding. Three sensory details that he used, is when we notice a cop following Marion, we see that Norman is stalking Marion, and when a shadowy figure shows up while Marion is taking a shower. The first sensory detail that creates suspense is when we see the cop following Marion. We believe that the cop recognizes something is up furthermore, is going to assert Marion for stealing the money.

Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder in which the patient experiences hallucinations and delusions, and often has difficulty functioning in their daily life (CITATION). A Beautiful Mind allows some insight into what this disorder entails and what it may be like to live with the diagnosis, as it accurately represents various symptoms and treatments.

In Stephen King’s essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies”, he discusses his view that everybody is insane but they keep it within themselves and horror movies is what controls their hidden insanity. King gives examples that even daily, people have small episodes of insanity that gets exposed but they still buy tickets to watch horror movies that challenge their hidden insanity. King then digs into the reasons as to why people are willing to buy tickets to watch horror movies. He simply states that people watch them to prove that they can withstand the scare and adds on how horror movies are similar to roller coaster rides: they both give a scare at unexpected places and is aimed for young audiences.

Set during the 1980’s in New York City, Patrick Bateman is an attractive, and successful man. He is ivy-league educated, works at a high-profile Wall Street financial firm, takes excellent care of his physique and engaged to an intelligent blonde named Evelyn who is “almost perfect looking.” Patrick also surrounds himself with similar people who share identical backgrounds in wealth and education. The concept of psychopaths and sociopaths in Western society and culture is not clearly defined, and covers a great range of character, attitudes and behaviour. This range includes everything from someone who is introverted and not socially adept to mass murderers and cannibals. Characters of psychopaths in early films were often created without a real understanding of psychopathic personalities. They were often portrayed as caricatures, being emotionally unstable, sadistic, sexually compulsive and with an urge to engage in random violence, murders, and destruction. This was often accompanied by bizarre mannerisms, such as giggling, laughing, or facial tics, often creating famous but unreal characters.
