In the book Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane. The main character, Henry, has recently enlisted in the Union Army and during his second engagement flees from the battle. The thought of desertion has been a recent dilemma in the mind of young Henry, and he wasn 't sure if that when the time of battle came if he would stay and fight, or desert the battle. When the time comes the regiment Henry is in is told to hold the enemy forces back, and Henry displays courage during the first battle. But as they celebrate, more confederate troops come and a second battle ensues, from which Henry flees from. During the march before the battle, Henry feared that he would run away from battle. And after being told by soldiers he wanted reassurance from that the others would do their fighting he felt more alone. On the march he was afraid that his regiment would be ambushed, but they made it unscathed. While the regiment managed to fend off another attack, they may have lost soldiers. Henry worried for himself above all and worried that whether if he stayed or not he would still die, regardless of the result of the battle. Especially now that he was caught off guard and was more scared than the first battle. Despite knowing his regiment might survive he was sure he wouldn 't and ran away to save his own life. The whole army squad that Henry was fighting with were all rookies they had never seen a dead man or ever killed anyone, none of them had experience. Him seeing his first dead man was kind of a little wake up call, so he could be prepared and that maybe could be him in the future. I believe it also showed him he's going to have to fight back because people are coming for him , not just one , many. This “meeting” with the man laying the ground without movement affect henry in a positive way because it warned him and made him ready for anything. Henry's confidence is somewhat based on the curiosity of his young age. He is confident that war will bring him honor and glory, but he doesn’t yet realise the hardships that are associated with war. “He felt that in this crisis his laws of life were useless. Whatever he had learned of himself was here of no avail. He was an unknown quantity.”
The reason Henry reacts that way becasue he didn't want to look bad in front of his regiment. He also felt like he was a cog in a machine when he was fighting in the first battle. He flees in the second battle since he thought that they were going to lose the battle. He also didn't feel like he was ready for a second battle. He decided to flee when he saw his men running out of their lines and fleeing away from the battle.
He was planning on marching his men through 200 miles of freezing waters and snow. George was going to retake Fort Sackville even if it was last thing he did. During this trip he was quoted as saying,” Great things have been effected by a few men well conducted.” Henry was not expecting an attack in the middle of the winter. Also, most of the men went back to their families for the winter.

Overall most people share these similar traits, such as lacking courage, running away from their problems, and leaving other people to defend for themselves. In the Red Badge of Courage Henry is asking himself if he should stay in his regiment to help fight or leave and make them defend for themselves. Henry's actions throughout the novel may cause the readers to ask, “Is Henry a coward”.
Henry continues by emotionally describing how he is ready to endure any pain that will come his way from finally learning the truth. Patrick Henry uses appeals of shared values, facts and data, and figurative language to entice the colonists to join the fight for independence. Patrick Henry uses appeals to shared values in order to address the colonists that they all share the same mission. For example, Henry claims “But different men often see the same subject in different lights.”
A Soldier’s Dilemma Like many others in his regiment, Henry Fleming, protagonist in The Red Badge of Courage, expects the Battle of Chancellorsville to be filled with heroism and legendary acts of dauntless heroism. Heroism, however, seems nowhere to be found, and Henry is left questioning his own valor. In The Red Badge of Courage, Crane writes Henry Fleming as a flawed yet good-hearted character by revealing his inner thoughts as he runs from the battle, his actions directed toward comrades, and by displaying Henry’s differences at the end of the story to emphasize the inner struggle between courage and cowardice.
This is a clear sign that Henry was not prepared to enlist in the war and was. A true hero would have stayed through it all and would have never given up. At the beginning of the story when only wanted to go against what his mother said, he was immature and misunderstanding. Henry’s mother told him, “Henry, don’t be a fool” (Crane 4). Even though his mother attempted change his mind, the next morning he set out to enlist.
In Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention, the most effective mode was logos. Henry wants to convince the delegates from each colonie why they should fight for their freedom against the British. In his speech, he uses ethos, logos, and pathos, but to try and convince the audience, the delegates, he uses logos for all the reasonings that is happening in front of their faces, which seems like the people try to avoid the situation. As Henry reads his speech respectfully, he appeals to the audience with what is actually happening around them. He puts the British ministry on the spotlight to make the delegates open their eyes and do something to stop them.
