In the beginning of the play, Proctor is introduced as a husband who has committed an affair with an extremely younger girl by the name of Abigail. This is still debatable, because Proctor only confessed because he had to. Abigail decide to use her jealousy of Goody Proctor to set her up and by setting her up she made it look like Goody Proctor had committed witchcraft. Abigail did this because she was trying to make a point and get John Proctors attentions. When John Proctor sees that his wife was set up and he knows why and goes to the court to try to get Goody Proctor out of jail and prove Abigail of falsurey. When at the court he claims that Abigail does it out of jealousy, however he does not have anything that supports his claim. This causes Danforth (the judge) and the others to not believe him, therefore his last instinct is to tell the court about the affair with Abigail to prove his claim about her intentions. When Danforth hears of the affair he ask the others to bring out Goody Proctor, to question her about whether or not the affair is true. Proctor then claims Goody Proctor has never told a lie. Since Goody Proctor does not know that Proctor has admitted to it and she lies. After lying and saying Proctor never committed an affair, Proctor yells, “Elizabeth, tell the truth! Elizabeth, I have confessed it! (Miller 1,148).” Proctor only confessed to affair because it’s his last option to expose Abigail and to get Goody Proctor out of jail. John Proctor can act out in aggressive ways, but some may say he is honorable because when he argues with Mary Warren he tries to reasoning with her first. To continue, the only way that he could convince Mary Warren to listen was to act out in angry. Even though John Proctor tries to reason with Mary Warren's he is in a rounded way a very violent and abusive to Mary. In this event, Mary wasn’t supposed to leave the house, however later that day she appears at the house after Proctor has already arrived home. When John Proctor confronts her about her leaving, she says she must to go to the trials. Disregarding what she has just said he tells her not to leave the house again and he threatens to hurt her. This is when Proctor starts to yell at Mary. When threatening Mary Proctor says, “I’ll whip you if you dare leave this house again” (Miller 1,117). This shows that John Proctor was quick to lash out on Mary and threatens to physically hurt her when all Mary wanted was to be present at the trials and wants to help the trials. However, Proctor gets mad at her and uses abusive threatens only because she goes somewhere when he never claimed he needed her at home for anything
Proctor after a long day of work comes home and has dinner, complements Elizabeth's food, and talks with Elizabeth about her day, and then Elizabeth tells proctor that abigail is the leading accuser in the court, accusing innocent people of witchcraft, and finally tells proctor to confess to the court but he cowardly says, “I know I cannot keep it. I say I will think on it“ (Miller 4.481). Knowing that many people will die the next morning, Proctor, restrains himself of going to the court to confess that Abigail is a fraud, thus he knows that if he confesses, Abigail will accuse him of adultery and his good name in the town will be
Arthur Miller, a playwright, wrote The Crucible, a dramatized and fictionalized play. The setting took place in Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. The play is about the witch trials, which started due to the jealousy and lust of Abigail Williams, the leader of the witchcraft trial, wanting to have John Proctor, the main protagonist, again. At the end of the play, Proctor is led to his hanging. Throughout the play, there are many events that had helped him made his decision.
But Judge Danforth doesn't believe Proctor and the reasoning behind him wanting Mary to confess. And so she tells the court the truth. When the girls are brought in, the court turns the blame onto Mary. Saying she was the one who bewitch them. Proctor in shock, confesses his affair with Abigail.
Before the play has even begun, we are informed that John has cheated on his wife, Elizabeth, with Abigail Williams who was a maid in his house. Proctor, already starting to feel some guilt, says to Abigail, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with. ”(17) while describing the affair they had. Proctor even says to her that even though “I may think of you softly from time to time.
In Act One of the play, Abigail says to Proctor “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near!”(Page 470). Then, Abigail mentions “Abigail (with a bitter anger). Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be-”, referring to Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife and the playwright writes “Proctor (angered-at himself as well). You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth!”(Page 471). Proctor responds the way he did because the reader knows that Abigail is telling the truth referring to the affair, and he is denying everything she says to keep his reputation and not let the secret get out.
The Trials and Testimonies of John Proctor The Crucible by Arthur Miller is set in the spring and fall of 1692 in a small, Puritan town in Salem, Massachusetts. The times are often desperate with people wondering if they can trust their neighbors that they have known all of their life, people who have been settled in the town since it first cropped into existence. Fear races through the villages like the whispers of the wind that stir the hanging bodies on the village greens. The Salem Witch Trials are occurring and no man, woman, or child is safe lest they follow the rules of the theocracy set about by the church and government.
John Proctor was a farm man around his early thirties, who was one to not get easily misled the wrong way. Proctor displays examples of unjust social classes throughout the play through his use of power to induce fear in people, especially women, so that he can get what he may believe to be the truth. He displays this a lot through act two when he states “I’ll whip the Devil out of you! With whip raised he reaches out for her, and she streaks away and yells” (Miller 608). This occurs after the family's maid, Mary Warren, refuses to stop going to Salem due to her position in the court.
“The Crucible” is a fiction story that took place in a small town called Salem in the state of Massachusetts in 1692 during the spring time. The plot of this story is about a group of girls who went into the forest led by a black slave named Tituba. They were all dancing in the forest until Reverend Parris caught them dancing in the forest and even saw one of the girl naked. Parris’s daughter Betty who was there in the forest falls into a coma-like state when Reverend Parris caught them. Reverend Parris only noticed his daughter was sick the next day and accused Abigail William, who is Reverend Parris’s niece, of witchery and caused his daughter to go into a coma-like state.
He defends his wife and tells the court that his wife fired Abigail because of their affair. When the court brought Elizabeth Proctor into the court and asked her about the affair she denied it. Even though she knew the affair was true she denied it because she didn’t know Proctor had confessed and wanted to take her husband’s name
John Proctor changed significantly from the beginning of the play to the end. At first, he is a farmer outside of Salem. He cuts wood, plows, and owns a great amount of property. John is married to Elizabeth Proctor. He had an affair with Abigail Williams, who was the Proctor’s former servant.
Proctor realized the truth behind everything and decided it was time to come forward and tell Danforth, “She thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore's vengeance, and you must see it now” (Miller ). John tries to reveal who Abigail really is but it does not help the lives of those who are to be hanged.
Beating someone is still beating them if you had a reason or not and that what John Proctor did. Yes, he did warn Mary Warren, but he also was forcing her to do something that would hurt and he also was threatening her. He wants Mary to tell the truth to free elizabeth but he does it in a way that could kill another person Even though he warned her, you can 't beat someone like he did Mary Warren. He told Mary that she would go to the court and confess and tell them she had lied. If she didn’t tell the court the truth, he told her he would beat her.
John Proctor never settles for keeping his opinion or what he thinks is right to himself. He knows telling Danforth that he is guilty for adultery won’t help his cause but it shows his desperation to win the case in order protect his wife, Elizabeth. John Proctor was sick and tired of watching Abigail win with a lie, in this case he spoke the truth knowing his consequences. John states, “Excellency, forgive me, forgive me. She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave!
Likewise, when Elizabeth is brought before Danforth to verify Proctor’s confession, she lies to protect her husband, whom she refers to as a “goodly man,” from suspicion (Miller, 113). The affair may have caused Elizabeth to doubt Proctor but both parties still care deeply for each other and try to protect each other from harm. Even in his last moments, Proctor’s last words- “Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!”- were directed toward Elizabeth and were full of love and care (Miller, 144). Proctor may have sinned but his regret over his affair with Abigail and the trouble he had brought upon his wife justifies his
