Many people do not realize that opioids do not only affect the consumers, they also affect the families and friends. It is a hard thing to overcome and often people forget to realize that it affects more than just the person using the drug. Personally, I 've seen how even the strongest person can be taken down. Just a simple night out with some friends can start a whole new addiction and destroy a future but at the same time create a motive to start a new one. Once making $80,000 a year at just 22 to being unemployed, struggling to survive till the end of the week.
My mother went to school for nursing, when she finished, she was one of the top students in the class. She started at $30 an hour she had a lot of money at a young age. She started at Mary Immaculate and worked there for 3 years and supervised over a whole floor. She was in charge of the staff and would oversee the patients and make sure that they got the care they needed.
She was in a car accident and consequently she received a neck injury. She was given medication to help with the pain, but became addicted to it as many others. When she began to work again she, began to steal patients’ prescription, but not enough that it would be

I can now look back to the times she would bring me to her work where I would meet all of the patients, remembering one lady who would give me 5$ every time I saw her and if I wouldn 't take it she would put it in my pocket herself. Seeing all these people made me happy and left me with good memories, but when my mom was fired it all stopped. She decided to get into the wrong groups of people, going to college parties and leaving me with my dad and grandmother. She would stay out until 3 or 4 in the morning, sometimes wouldn 't come home until the next night. She soon began addicted to other drugs such as Adderall, which is given to people with adhd to help them
Regular use of the prescribed drug can quickly and dangerously turn into abuse, which can later turn to addiction. Oxycodone is a powerful pain reliever and offers relief to people who are in pain or struggling with terminal conditions. It can be often hard to stay on top and in control of the situation. Admitting that you have an addiction or recognizing that someone else is suffering from it and offering a helping hand, can help save a life. oxycodone is nothing to mess with, as it is quite a real and possibly deadly
“ Because they produce euphoria in addition to pain relief, they can be misused. Regular use- even as prescribed by a doctor can lead to dependence ,and when misused, opioid pain relievers can lead to overdose incidents and deaths” (Drugabuse.gov/opioids) Prescribing opioids have more dangers to the human than they do
Underlying Causes: The increase in the sale of opioids is considered to be the root of the opioid crisis, as the drugs have been proven to be highly addictive. An addiction to prescriptive opioids, however, can lead to an addiction to synthetic, illegal opioids, such as heroine or fentanyl, which are less expensive and easier to acquire. In fact, in their journal article, “Associations of nonmedical pain reliever use and initiation of heroin use in the United States” Pradip Muhuri and associates discovered that “the recent (12 months preceding interview) heroin incidence rate was 19 times higher among those who reported prior nonmedical prescription pain reliever (NMPR) use than among those who did not (0.39 vs. 0.02 percent)” (Muhuri et. al). In other words, abusing prescription opioids significantly raises the chances of abusing illicit drugs, such as heroin.
Opioids are a prescription medication involving various forms of drugs, it can benefit patients as little as a few minutes, however, it can be extremely dangerous to patients without self-control. Morphine, heroin, oxycodone, and fentanyl are used for many different medical uses until companies started to combine these four ingredients into one small simple pill. The pill reduces chronic pain from a body in a matter of minutes taking a minimum dosage. The company that produces Opioids have discovered that for the most part opioids are healthier and safer than any other medications. Like other medications, opioids can also have its side effects too such as; sedation restlessness, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, constipation and much more.
There are many people that have been through this. Rachell Allen, a mother of three, talked about opioids and how they ruined her life. Allen’s kids left the house and she separated with her husband. Allen knew she was in trouble. She started to control her addiction and started talking to her kids again.
Dependence on prescription opioids can stem from treatment of chronic pain and in recent years is the cause of the increased number of opioid overdoses. Opioids are very addictive substances, having serious life threatening consequences in case of intentional or accidental overdose. The euphoria attracts recreational use, and frequent,
Opioid Epidemic in the United States The opioid crisis has risen over the years here in America. The addiction to painkillers has caused many drug overdoses across America. According to the Vox," In 2015, more than 52,000 people have died from drug overdoses from linked to opioids such as Percocet, heroin, Oxycontin or even fentanyl. This problem did not become an overnight health crisis, but it has become quickly known in America. Expanding our drug treatment centers across America would provide the support to those who are addicted to drugs.
Losing a battle to illness is devastating and utterly heartbreaking. With addiction, it is quite often that people fail and fall into their old habits. Others simply don’t want to be sober. In How to Help Someone with an Opioid Addiction, published by the Chicago Sun Times, the author lists ways for friends and family members to assist in the process of sobriety. But, what if it doesn’t work?
Quinones states, “As the opiate epidemic mangled the middle class, these kids doped up and dropped out. Earlier generations of opiate addicts became self-employed construction workers or painters, because that was all they could manage with heroin, and often jail, in their lives” (274), which is a major problem America faces when trying to solve the opiate epidemic. If we educate the states about the addiction rates and potential danger of opiates, public opinion could shift, creating alternate solutions to solving the heroin epidemic in America. In order to lower the amount of opiate addicts the stigma that used to be associated with opiate use needs to return. The fear that used to surround opiate use was one of the only reasons opiates were not used as medication.
A couple fellow classmates in high school and college were always taking some kind of pills. Myself not knowing much about drugs, I thought they were prescribed. Later, I found out that they weren’t prescribed. My classmates were using them for themselves and also distributing to other students. I never spoke up about it, since I never witnessed the distribution but rumors go around.
These pills, such as xanax and oxycodone allow people for short periods of time to withdraw from the harsh reality faced today. “Between 1997 and 2002, sales of oxycodone and methadone nearly quadrupled” (Okie). Around 15 years later and the prescription pill problem is continuing to skyrocket. Since prescription pills are dispersed out to anyone by doctors, many people do not realize that it is as much of an illicit drug as cocaine and heroin is. “Misinformation about the addictive properties of prescription opioids and the perception that prescription drugs are less harmful than illicit drugs are other possible contributors to the problem” (NIDA).
Prescription drugs (opiates only) have caused over 165,000 deaths within the last 15 years and is currently on the rise. Over 2 million Americans in 2014 were addicted to Opiate prescription narcotics. The most troubling fact is listed directly on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website: “As many as 1 in 4
Nursing offers endless opportunities to anyone and it is one of the only fields that will always be in demand. The nursing field has great opportunities available to its employees. I caught myself getting furious at even nominal things. I thought a lot about how I was going to survive without her being here. I thought I was moving on, until one day someone asked me, “ If you had one wish what would it be?” and the first thing I thought was to spend that one wish on my mother.
