The north and south side of the mountain is expected to have contrasting difference due to the amount of sunlight each side receives. Exposure to sunlight affects the plants growth and overall life.
For this lab the objective is to see how the properties of individual substances compare with properties of mixed substances. For this lab the research questions is mixture, homogenous mixture, and heterogeneous mixture. A mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances that are mixed together physically but not combined chemically. Also a homogeneous mixture is a uniform in structure or composition throughout the substance. Lastly, a heterogeneous mixture is a consisting of dissimilar parts of elements (not the same).

You could distribute the task among employees by doing it in pairs or assign a list of supplies that each person is responsible for keeping inventory of. A very vital tool for completing an inventory check is having a list of the supplies and equipment that you need to take inventory of. You can use Excel to create the inventory list. In this lab, three unknown compounds were separated from a mixture and identified by melting point. Unknown mixture #124 has components of acid, base and neutral compound. The compounds were identified by melting point and matched up with the known melting points from a given list. In order to identify the compound it was important to separate by dissolving the mixture in an organic solvent which was not soluble in water, and then extracting the solution first with HCl, and then dilute sodium hydroxide solution. From the separation mixture, the aqueous layer were obtained and labeled as TT-1 (base), TT-2(acid) and TT-3 (neutral) in three different test tubes for later recovery.

My partners and I figured this out because the physical and chemical properties of both of the substances are very similar. For example, both powders are not soluble in water, and they both turned red when they reacted with the universal indicator.

Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to identify given Unknown White Compound by conducting various test and learning how to use lab techniques. Tests that are used during this experiment were a flame test, ion test, pH test, and conductivity test. The results drawn from these tests confirmed the identity of the Unknown White Compound to be sodium acetate (NaC2H3O2) because there were no presence of ions and sodium has a strong persistent orange color. The compound then will be synthesized with the compounds Na2CO3 and HC2H3O2 to find percent yield.
Exercise 14: Unknown Identification Lab Report The purpose of the study was to identify the unknown bacterium using various biochemical tests in addition to using scientific methods in determining the outcome of the hypothesis. Each biochemical test will help determine the bacteria based on specific characteristics of each organism. I was giving unknown number 232. The first procedure that needed to be done after obtaining unknown bacterial mixture was to isolate the two bacteria in a pure culture using the streak plate method described in Microbiology Laboratory Manual Eight Edition. The material used was trypticase soy agar (TSA) plate, nutrient plate, starch agar, hydrogen peroxide, iodine reagent and microscope.
Experimental Procedure Identifying the Unknown We performed three tests on our compound to definitively identify it. First we combined 5 g of our unknown compound with 10 mL of distilled water and measured the pH change in the water to test its solubility. Then, to try to identify the cation present in our compound and narrow down the possibilities, we held a sample over a flame and watched for color change. We performed an acid test where we applied a few drops of HCl and watched for a bubbling reaction, to test for the presence of carbonate.
TLC was used to identify the actual unknown product as well as other products/reactants present in the filtered solution. The procedure was conducted by placing a TLC plate in a developing chamber that is filled with a small amount of solvent. The solvent cannot be too polar because it will cause spotted compounds on the TLC plate to rise up too fast, while a very non-polar solvent will not allow the spots to move. The polarity of the spots also determines how far it moves on the plate; non-polar spots are higher than polar ones. After spots on the TLC form, the Rf values are calculated and used to analyze the similarity of the compounds.
