90.65% of homicides are revenge related. 100% of those happen because of emotional hurt or hatred. Will leaves in a rough neighborhood. His actions are dictated by three rules. His brother dies and he’s faced with the decision of killing his brother’s murderer or letting him walk. Emotions play a large role in this community; especially, Uncle Mark, Mikey, and Will in Long Way Down. Will’s dad let emotion take over his thoughts and decision before he killed the wrong guy. “UNCLE MARK AND MY FATHER/ looked at me with hollow eyes/ dancing somewhere between\ guilt and grief/ which I couldn’t make sense of\ until my father admitted/ that he had killed/ the wrong guy”. (Reynolds 218) Will’s dad, Mikey, allowed the hurt he felt to control his decision of killing who he thought shot his brother. However, he did not think it through and shot off instinct of who he thought had done it. “I didn’t know/ he wasn’t the right guy,/ Pop said,/ a tremble in/ his throat. / I was sure that it was Mark’s killer./ Had/ to/ be”. (Reynolds 220) Mikey needed to avenge his brother to make it right. He justified death with more death because he let his emotions control him. Will’s dad had grown up on rules and in those rules the way you show respect and the only way to show the hurt you feel is by killing the killer; except, he …show more content…
“And in an hour/ had enough\ money to buy/ a new camera”. (Reynolds 183) This part of the story shows how fast doing something bad can turn into “good” and then…addicting. Uncle Mark was making more money than he ever had. “HE HELD THAT CORNER/ for a day,/ for a week,/ for a month,/ full-out/ pusher,/ money-making/ pretty boy”. (Reynolds 185) He found happiness in the money and material things he could flex. He was addicted to the quick cash and did not think about the dangers the job brought to him. Uncle Mark made the mistake of letting “happiness” and even greed make the decision to stay on the
Chris McCandless was born into an “upper-middle-class” life courtesy of the hard work of his father. Although he often rebuked wealth, he was given opportunities only possible through his family’s small wealth such as his education and his knack for business. However, it was this exposure to money that allowed McCandless to form his own opinions and the unnecessary value placed on social status leading to his life in the wild. He left the confines of his structured life to live out in nature as an escape from the world he was born into. No matter his opinion on the wealth his family earned, ultimately McCandless’s life could not help but be shaped by it.
Now murder is of course an extremely unethical act yet in this case it was a murder for a murder. According to the law, this is unjust but to some moral content. Maybe in someone's mind or ideals a couple centuries ago. It’s reasonable and in Matt Fowler's mind. Revenge was the only way to avenge his son's death.
He knew that in order to satisfy Daisy’s standards of wealth and his own, he needed to make enough money for himself. He turned to bootlegging and made himself wealthy by taking part in this illegal activity. Once he felt like he had enough wealth, he intentionally built his huge
The mistrust and betrayal is real. Throughout the reading, I did not want to believe that Amy and Billy Holcombe had anything to do with Hollands death. The truth came out of the darkness not instantly but slowly revealing the truth of everything and why it happened. It’s so devastating and disturbing of how a woman could even do that to a human being. Holland had feelings and trusted Mrs. Amy.
This life that Hazlitt wishes upon no one is detailed in a dreadful manner as one must “forego leisure, freedom, and ease of body and mind” to obtain wealth. Throughout the whole excerpt, many allusions are written comprehensively to give emphasis on the deplorable effects of this life of “pains, anxiety, and hopes.” As a result, Hazlitt leaves a lasting impact on the reader by detailing the gloomy effects of desiring money. Furthermore, while Hazlitt’s use of detail helps the reader understand the effects of the lust for money by fleshing them out, figurative language will make the reader ponder upon the subject of money, particularly whether it is crucial or
Each character shares a commonality of being killed due to the ruthless cycle of gun violence. Every character plays a role in swaying Will’s decision of revenge. Certain characters had
“He did not smoke, and of course he did not drink; indeed, he had never tasted spirits, and was inclined to avoid people who had—a circumstance that did not shrink his social circle as much as might be supposed, for the center of that circle was supplied by the members of Garden City's First Methodist Church,a congregation totaling seventeen hundred ,most of whom were as abstemious as Mr. Clutter could desire.’’ (10) ( Culture and Community ) Capote used this quote to illustrate the culture of the village of Holcomb, where Mr.Clutter lived and how the social life of a religious family is rooted in their church. This quote represents culture, because is trying to tell us that people in Holcomb should live a life according to their religion ,because their actions affect their social circle and their community.
Today, money has made many people believe that you need to have a lot of money to live a great, happy life. People in the world, especially the people who don’t have as much money as the ones that do, look up to people like popular idols, because they have money. People think they have a great living life with all the money they have earned during their lives. In the short story “Why You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes, the author uses diction, colloquialism and dialect to express the fact that just because people have the money to go out to eat somewhere expensive or buy the newest clothes, does not mean that a person is happy all the time and expresses how people in the town talks. Money is what makes the world goes round and everyone has come

His passing influences Will to find who killed Shawn and motivates him to get revenge for his brother’s murderer. “The middle drawer called to me/its awkward off-centeredness/
That one bullet cost Shawn’s life, and the next may do the same for Will. These rules had a bad impact on many lives in their neighborhood. They saw revenge as an act of justice. They believed it was the right thing to do. Which is why Will wanted to kill
However, this is not the case. He got his wealth through immoral actions of his; He got rich by selling alcohol, which was illegal at the time. In the future, the government lifts the prohibition laws. However, at the time, it was immoral; it was wrong to sell alcohol. “ ‘Oh I’ve been in several things,’ he corrected himself.
A gust of wind swept into the house. “As he saw the yellow paper...sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and closed the door behind him. ”(p 125). No longer are thoughts of success and money on his mind; Tom’s priorities have
“Bad Blood”, by Will Weaver, is a short story about a teenager named Jared. Jared is from a family of thieves and con artists. His family has now settled in a rustic Ohio town where people still leave their house and car windows open. After reading the story of “The Short, Happy Life of Frances Macomber”, by Ernest Hemingway I Learned that money isn’t everything to keep humans happy. Even though this story was from the 1900’s, I am pretty sure money did make a difference to the people. What I enjoyed the most about this story was the build up of the action when Macumber and Wilson would go hunting. The reason I enjoyed that part of the story was because I’ve never been hunting and the reading gave me such realistic image as if I was living the moment while reading the story. Something I found frustrating about the story was the betrayal from Mucumber’s wife.
