Individuality In The Chocolate War

There are several differences between Robert Cormier’s The Chocolate War and its movie adaptation by Keith Gordon however there is as many, if not more, similarities. Both the book and the film follow the major theme of disturbing the universe, which is essentially what Jerry does throughout the plot. The term “disturbing” is to interfere with the normal arrangement or functioning of something. In a literal sense, the term “universe” is a world in which something exists or prevails, but in a figurative sense it could be, threw the novel, interpreted in three different ways. Keith Gordon’s revamping of The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier respects the theme of disturbing the universe.

The Chocolate War follows the events that Jerry Renault must face the consequences of his actions after he ponders the question “do I dare disturb the universe?”. Jerry’s school is governed by a corrupt principal and who seeks helps of the violent gang who carries out the arrangements of the principal. When the gang assigns Jerry to sell the candy that was bought with stolen school money by the corrupt principal, he stares at a poster that reads “do I dare disturb the universe?” and he decides that he is going to. Standing up against the bullies and refusing to sell the candy, he suffers severe consequences.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self Reliance, he passionately expresses his views on individualism. Emerson’s views on individuality are views of following oneself’s own thoughts and passions, rather than fearing men and following the world. The speaker is successful in getting his point across with the use of allusions, anaphora, and thought triggering metaphors. As discussed previously, Emerson employs strong allusions of well known people to get his claim across, which is how important individuality is.

Usually, it is the protagonist that triumphs while the antagonist suffers, in other words, the good guy thrives at the end. Jerry’s decision to fight Emile Janza leaves him dangerously injured and in need of an ambulance at the end. Emile Janza has no mercy and viciously attacks Jerry hitting him with all the power that he has. Jerry tells The Goober, a main friend that Jerry speaks most with, that it is not worth fighting back with The Vigils and that it is best for him to do whatever they tell him to do. Jerry passes out on the floor mat from all of the horrific shots by Emile.

Individuality allows every person to be themselves and be different from each other. However, In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, Rand describes a society where the people were not allowed to openly be themselves, or else they would be punished for being different. The main character, Equality, notices he is different slowly throughout the novella, but kept continuing to be like everyone else for awhile. These rules exist in this society to strip human individuality in order to achieve total equality.

Conformity is something that humans have been doing for a long time. Such conformity has lead to negative outcomes. This idea is explored through “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Unknown Citizen” by W.H. Auden. In these two texts conformity eliminates individuality and causes the society to be weakened.

Chocolate is one of the most popular type of food in the world. Nearly 53 percent of the chocolate consumer in USA eats chocolate once a week. Moreover, according to elite daily “Chocolate’s scent increases theta brain waves, which induce relaxation. This is mainly why people feel better about their problems after eating loads of it”. In fact, chocolate industry in United States accounts for 13 billion dollars and people consume 3.1 million pounds every year.

How could losing individuality affect a society? The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is about a guy named Equality 7-2521 who is trying to find himself in a society where everything is controlled and different. Later, he finds himself even though he will have to go through many obstacles to get there. The process behind losing individuality in an Anthem’s society are in forcing strict laws, brain washing of their citizens, and removing of family. The Anthem society in forcing of strict laws made it easy for everyone to lose their individuality.
