Introduction The book that I selected is called “Getting Life” by Michael Morton, who is a man that was wrongfully convicted of killing his wife in Texas in 1986. This book takes us from a happy young couple to the day of the murder, through the investigation into his wife’s murder, Michael’s trial and conviction, 25 years in prison, appeals, release from prison, and reintegration into society. One unique fact about this case is that is the first case where the prosecutor in a wrongful conviction case was subsequently convicted of prosecutorial misconduct, stripped of their law license and sentenced to serve time in jail.
The last chapter starts with the criminal Wes. The beginning of the chapter is a story about how Wes, Tony and other two men committed a crime. Wes’ mother Mary was shocked, when she heard the news about jewelry store robbery by four masked men; at that moment she even did not know how much this news would change her life. One of the robbers shot a veteran of police department, because of this police officers were incredibly interested to catch them. A break in the case came really quickly, because one of the perpetrators, who was Wes’ brother, tried to sell one of the stolen watches to a drug dealer who had an authorized wiretap on his phone.
Hubner’s intentions with this study and Last Chance in Texas is to allow others that read the book to recognize the meaning behind a juvenile’s criminal actions. This could be a guide book for a potential probation officer to understand unique ways for them to treat their offender with the motive to not focus on punishment. The potential probation officer and use the ideas of the criminal finding a way to put himself in the victim’s shoes and understand how being a criminal harms more than just the person that was intended to be hurt. The audience of this book varies. The book was poorly written without as much detail, so the stories written down could not have a false accusation that the stories documented from the students in this book
In the book, The Other Wes Moore, Wes Moore illustrates the influences of family and environment through the use of altering narratives. By going back and forth through both Wes Moore’s lives, the audience can see how their differences in families and environments led them to make the decisions they chose. Families are one of the most important factors in a child's life. They influence the child's development and the paths they’re gonna take.
After having his first child the other Wes Moore had been missing school, and later dropped out. Having a child put a lot of strain on the other Wes Moore. And without a high school diploma and a criminal record it would be nearly impossible for Wes to find a job. For the time being, however, Wes was able to stay with his aunt Nicey. Nicey told him “to either get a job or go to school” (110).
In the short story “Life and Death” the lives of the two main characters, both named Wes Moore, were extremely identical. Suddenly, everything changed when one of them made a mistake that led to his imprisonment while the other one became a successful businessman. Well, if you are wondering how that happened it is because of 2 words “ Being resilient ”.The different outcomes happened because of access to opportunities, supporting systems, and willingness to take responsibility for their actions and learn from their mistakes. First off, Wes Moore's success was largely a result of his access to nice opportunities.
According to Freeman (1996), crime is an activity of individuals with low legitimate earnings prospects. Although associated with those at or below the national poverty rate, crime is an expensive act that is costly to both the individual and society. In the United States, more than 23 million criminal offenses were committed in 2007, resulting in approximately $15 billion in economic losses to the victims and $179 billion in government expenditures on police protection, judicial and legal activities, and corrections (U.S. Department of Justice, 2004a, 2007a, 2008). The cost of crime are normally divided into four components: victim cost, criminal justice system cost, crime career cost, and intangible cost. Seldom discussed or often forgotten is the alarming cost of crime indirectly affect the families of many offenders.
From the environment to their mothers, it was the little differences that left a significant impact on the two lives and their choices. Ultimately, if it had not been for Joy Moore’s decision to send Author Wes Moore to military school then perhaps Author Wes would not have changed his behavior and would’ve ended up in a similar position as Prisoner Wes. Wes had a choice; and luckily for him it had been the correct one. And, like Wes, we all have multiple choices, but don’t we decide our choices based on our circumstances? We all do not live the same live and therefore do not make the same choices.
So she had decided to enroll him in a military academy after he had harmed his sister and her, and while Moore was at the academy, he had called her and she says. “Wes, you are not going anywhere until you give this place a try. I am so proud of you, and your father is proud of you, and we just want you to give this a shot. Too many people have sacrificed for you to be there.”.
Learning the significance in regards towards the criminal justice system, and noticing certain aspects and turning points made me realize just how important it is to continue to progress and overcome over every situation we may come across in our life. Both concepts of the books acknowledge the hardships that inmates face and provides many positive examples of how individuals overcame them. As for Mr. Smith Goes to Prison Jeff Smith discussed prison reform and his own personal experience in the prison system he had experienced. Jeff Smith's lifetime of advocacy and civil service make him perfectly suited to write this insightful and damning account of our Criminal Justice System.
The factors that led to the other Wes Moore becoming so different from the author are shown throughout the story, such as him dropping out of high school due to the lucrative drug game or having to return to the said game after trying to get a job which couldn't support his family. The cycle of poverty represented in the novel is almost completely unavoidable, but one of the few exceptions is the author, who had to fight tooth and nail to get out of the cycle. In the novel, the importance of education is repeatedly expressed throughout the novel, whether it was the lack of education the other Wes received or the military education that the author Wes got. The author manages to break the cycle of poverty, while the other Wes is a demonstration of the vast majority of people who fall victim to it.
Wes found almost impossible to find a job. Therefore, he finally went down the wrong path to support his family.

However, when my older brother began to experience repeated run-ins with the law, I found myself forced to face the harsh realities of racism, and generational conflict in ways that I never could have imagined. I remember the first time he got arrested at the age of 14 or 15 for petty theft. He got caught stealing a chocolate bar
