Hockey is one of the most well-known sports played by professional athletes and kids as it is a game that has grown in significance throughout history and has created chances for kids to build new relationships and learn new things. Hockey has typically been a game that encourages kids to make relationships with other people and have fun playing a sport they love. Everyone is given the chance to play or watch hockey games. This is what hockey is to people today. However, it can be difficult to place the origin of hockey, it was a sport that brought people together from the very start. It is evident in the following quote that there is an abundance of different origins we could place for hockey, “it is clear that hockey is an example of convergent evolution, a concept from biology that describes how unrelated species develop similar features when evolving in a similar environment.” (13) . Hockey has evolved over several years due to the people who play and watch, and the environmental changes. All of these things can make it difficult to pinpoint exactly where hockey started and what the game was really like. For example, the rules have changed due to the influence of other sports. One point that is evident from the quote, however, is that hockey is related to the people who play and watch, the game changes with the people. In this way, the people and players make the game what it is. This point has been demonstrated in Hockey: A Global History when it says, “For centuries, …show more content…
For a long time, there have been little league teams, school teams, and opportunities for kids all over cities or villages to come together and play. The history of hockey has shown the significance of the culture that started it, as well as what it has become, “So the business history of sport is also about culture.” (5) . Over multiple years, it has gone from a sport that was designed for one culture, to bringing together numerous cultures, encouraging inclusion among everyone. Hockey has brought together so many people, allowing them to feel a sense of freedom, as demonstrated in the quote, “We hope to convey the exhilaration and sense of freedom that have driven hockey’s development for 150 years.” (14) . It is a sport that allows, not only the players but also the fans to get away from their lives when it can be difficult and enjoy themselves, even if it is for a short time. Hockey has not only become a significant part of people’s lives, but also a significant part of countries all around the world, “Stanley Cup hockey games were national events that shaped how cities and regions saw themselves and each other.” (2108) . Various countries around the world either play professionally, or just cheer on the game, but the Stanley Cup allowed the players to represent their countries and show others what they were capable of. Hockey, like several other sports, was seen as a game for men. It
Hockey’s earliest roots can be found in indigenous games, it was
In Shema Khan’s essay, “I was a Teenage Hijabi Hockey Player”, Khan exposes us to her relationship with the game of hockey. She provides readers with relatable memories, as both a fan and a player, and punctuates her stories with the view from a Muslim woman’s perspective. Khan excitedly reminisces about some of her earliest encounters with the game, describing the electric nature of hockey in 1970’s Montreal. Her love of the game continued into her post-secondary schooling; she even spearheading the formation of a women’s house league at Harvard. Throughout her recollections, Khan expresses her thrill at successfully encouraging others to join her on the ice, no matter their skill level, so that they too could experience the joy of the
Saul was getting hit left and right but refused to hit back. He knew that he was going to play a fair game because hockey was what gave Saul an escape from the world even if it did not seem like it
The Hockey Sweater is both a short story and animated film written by Roch Carrier. Over the years, the story has only risen in popularity and has engrained itself in Canadian culture and history. The story is about a young boy who is growing up in Quebec and is a huge fan of Maurice Richard and the Montreal Canadiens. One winter, his coveted Canadians sweater is too small and his mother orders him a new one. However, when the new jersey arrives it is that of a rival team: the Toronto Maple Leaves.
This quote exemplifies how hockey offers Saul an escape from the challenges he faces, allowing him to experience a redemptive sense of freedom and fulfillment. Another quote that emphasizes hockey's role in Saul's redemption is, "Hockey became my way of life, my pathway, my expression" (Saul, Wagamese, p. 232). This quote highlights the transformative nature of hockey in Saul's life, providing him with a means of reclaiming his identity and finding purpose. In a secondary source, it is explained how Saul finds true happiness and joy when he is playing hockey. Through his journey in hockey, Saul not only defies societal expectations but also finds redemption by embracing his passion and unleashing his full
As Saul tries to go pro, the white players on his team make his life as difficult as possible. Saul forgets the reason he started playing hockey. “[he] began to skate with deliberate intention of shoving [his] skill up the noses of those who belittled [him]” (164). Once Saul stops playing hockey and goes through a period of self discovery, hockey returns to him. He recognizes that hockey is not a battle ground.
Saul’s life at St.Jerome 's was hell, everywhere he looked there was agony and heartbreak. “We lived under constant threat. If it wasn’t the direct physical threat of beatings, the Iron Sisters or vanishing, it was the dire threat if purgatory, hell…” Page 80. As a result hockey became an escape for Saul, something so pure that helped Saul cope with the nightmare his life became.
Last but not least I believe that fighting in hockey can be a way of punishment for dirty plays. Dirty plays are somewhat common in hockey and may not always be caught by refs. A lot of fights start this way and it holds both the fighter and the cheater accountable for their actions. This often means that the cheater may not cheat anymore making the game fairer.
Hockey is one of the most important parts for Saul's traumatizing story. It is introduced to him by a priest he met at a residential school, which is ironic as the priests didn't usually bring any good for indigenous kids. He passionately practices the sport using literal feces as equipment which is evidence of his passion. It teaches him valuable life lessons throughout the novel and helps him find a healthy output. Hockey plays a significant role in Saul's story as it serves as a source of hope, freedom and resilience.
Hockey is a fast paced sport because players go across the ice hitting opponents, passing, juking, and shooting at the goal. On the ice players fight for the puck, a small rubber disk, and try to score in the opponents net. Players on each side get tired really fast and have line changes. Hockey is the only sport where you are allowed to switch out players while the puck is in play. A usual hockey player changes within forty five seconds.
A lot of factors go into how people view the sport as a whole and if it was different circumstances hockey could be less of a popular sport or have less attention by America’s society. As expressed I feel that hockey uses fighting as an marketing tool to make their brand bigger and the only way fighting wouldn’t expands hockey was if it was primary played by the younger generations of Americas
Saul states, “In the spirit of hockey I believed I had found community, a shelter and a heaven from everything bleak and ugly in the world” (Wagamese 90). Thus, hockey serves as an escape route for all the emotional turmoil that Saul has gone through, and he uses the hockey spirit as a tool to facilitate his healing
As more women begin to exercise hockey from the 70’s and onwards, these women had to obtain facilities from the community, but it wasn’t easily granted to them. In Williams, Women’s Hockey: A Heated Debate describes the issues experienced by a female hockey player by the name of Blainey. Blainey depicts that, comparing to her brother, whom also plays hockey, the girl’s team had restricted and inconvenient times and the locations provided for them to practise were set far out of their community. Furthermore, “the quality” of their resources was not effective to succeed in this sport.
The Soviet Union's ice hockey team was renowned for its dominance in the sport, having won numerous championships and Olympic gold medals. The American team, on the other hand, consisted mainly of amateur and college players, considered underdogs in the competition which was noted in the book, How a Stunning Upset United a Country: Miracle on Ice, Michael Burgan states “The Americans, on the other hand, were mostly college students”. However, the American players' determination, skill, and teamwork resulted in a stunning upset victory over the Soviet team. The triumph of the United
Alternating between skating and rest (what is known as interval training in the fitness world) improves the efficiency of the cardiovascular system, allowing it to bring oxygen to the muscles more quickly". So they could skate faster and better with that. Also they get very short shifts cause they get so tired skeptical no up and down the ice. Are hockey players tough athletes?
