Art has been around for centuries, expressed in various ways through different mediums; painting, drawing, photography, music, and so many more. Each having smaller categories within them. One can create a portrait with different types of paint, chalk, pens and pencils, the lens of a camera. A musician can convey a feeling within lyrics, or notes of a song. Separate forms of art, yet if you look closely enough, you can see similarities as well.

In Chapter 5, the belief that the “blood remains Haitian”, regardless of citizenship, comes up often. While this notion allows those in Haiti to expand the “nation” and links them to lands of greater opportunity, it is especially significant to Haitian immigrants in the U.S., who often experience racism on a daily basis, as it gives them a location in which they can be proud of their race and to which they will always belong. My culture project is about french Guiana and the food they eat on holidays like Christmas, one of the delicious dish names the orange cheesecake. They make this dish with creamy Carmel-orange sauce on top. To begin, the french guyanese people look at the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. They believed in that December 25 was an ideal date to remember the teaching of the sublime teacher of love and compassion. They also learned to make a contribution for the strengthening of human values in our society.

We all gathered and sat around the dinner table. The hot soup sat in the middle of the table steaming hot with its distinct scent that I get to smell every year. While pouring me a bowl of soup my dad reminded me why on New Year’s Day we eat Soup Joumou. “Remember,” he said, “Haiti became a free country on January 1st, 1804, before that, while blacks and slaves worked hard over a hot stove to prepare Soup Joumou for their masters, they were not allowed to drink this soup in Haiti. It was a delicacy, it was reserved for the privileged French slave masters.

There are several similarities and differences between the American and Haitian Declarations of Independence. The Haitian Declaration of Independence seems to focus primarily on freeing themselves from the French’s influence and slavery. Several times throughout the document, the French are referred to as a tyranny. It is very clear that the new Haitian government wants nothing to do with the French. In fact, they want to “wash away” all memories of what life was like with the French in power.

Because the five cultural regions group together different cultures, they support the illustration in showing Louisiana culture. Mardi Gras, a tradition in Louisiana, fills streets with beads. As a result, beads become a representation of the festival, therefore benefit the depiction of Louisiana culture. Music, constructing the base of our culture, enhances the elements of LA’s culture. Because the music notes symbolize excitement and music, they assist the portrayal of the sketch (p.5-29).

Dominicans have a variety of food, such as dairy products, meats, breads, fruits, and vegetables. Unlike Haiti, Haitians eat the same food every day; for example, rice, beans, mangos and unhealthy food, as cookies, made by them using mud. It is not easy to obtain resources from the nothing because Haiti does not produce enough food crops and livestock to feed its people. As I have said, even though Dominicans and Haitians share history and land, they both finished in a very different situation, so they differ in several aspects.
