We all know the saying “There is strength in numbers”, and this applies in the case of the Civil War, the bigger your army, the bigger the chance you have at victory. Casualties were at an all time high and the Union and Confederacy scrambled to protect their troops. The Civil War’s staggering number of casualties accounted for calculated tactics, the troublesome lives of civilians and the emergence of proper medical practice in a race to win, and in doing so caused an abundance of trauma for almost everyone in the nation. Nonfiction books can often expand ones knowledge, especially in the subject of science. In the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, writer of the book and journalist Rebecca Scloot finds herself looking at an image of an African American whom had a tumor growing in her body without knowledge of it. This woman in the photo, Henrietta Lacks, although her name was unknown by most scientist and teachers, helped change the face of medicine back then and even today. Henrietta Lacks started getting treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 31. The physicians at the hospital cut a dime size piece of her tumor and sent it into the lab where George Gey then put it on clots of chicken blood to see if the cells would grow.
Alexa Kersting was a young fourteen-year-old girl from West Fargo waiting for a life-changing lung transplant. Kersting was diagnosed with lung disease by the age of seven, and developed pulmonary hypertension-- high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart-- by the age of twelve (“Pulmonary Hypertension”). Once she was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, she was placed on the transplant waiting list, and for the upcoming months Alexa was on that list, she was on oxygen twenty-four hours a day. Unfortunately, she could never do any of the things other “normal” children could do due to her illnesses and treatments, meaning her hobbies had to be less strenuous, such as piano and art. The Civic of Christmas When most people think of Christmastime, they picture Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Nutcracker, and snow-covered hills perfect for sledding. At face value, these age-old holiday observances are just ways of celebrating the holiday season, or traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. However, upon further examination, aspects of the holiday season have had deep-rooted impacts on our society. During the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Progressive Era, practiced rhetoricians took strategic advantage of the opportunity to connect the emotional appeals of the holiday season with the widespread social activism that unfurled across the nation. The landmark
As a Master’s student in Justice, Law & Criminology completing my degree in May 2016, I would be an excellent fit for the Youth and Conflict Research and Learning Internship with Mercy Corps. I was alerted to the internships with your organization by a professor and have spoken with Ms. Beza Tesfaye in the past regarding such opportunities. I believe that my demonstrated dedication to understanding violence, my technical research skills, and my varied work experience equip me to serve Mercy Corps’s mission to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. In my coursework, I have studied a variety issues related to violence, crime, law, and justice.

By expanding the mission to incorporate reaching a global pediatric population through invaluable research, education, collaborative efforts and community involvement, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital vocalizes the intent to improve pediatric health on a broad scale through work accomplished by the institution. In addition, changing the vision statement from the present wording allows for a dynamic change from a statement conveying a desire to lead versus a statement
