Thesis: As expressed in The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the theme of intolerance as a stem from personal experience and strict religion, a premise of the witch trials, and the behavior regarding the accusations.
Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, uses the very basis of a time of intolerance in his life as a parallel to the story. In a time period known as McCarthyism, which is anti-communist, a Senator named Joseph McCarthy makes hundreds of accusations against those he suspects to be communists that infiltrates the United States. Arthur Miller, along with numerous other writers and actors, is accused of communist sympathies, goes before a committee, and black-listed. Few are willing to stand up against McCarthy and thus those

In a desperate attempt to get information of out Abigail, he exclaims, “It must come out--my enemies will bring it out. Let me know what you have done there. Abigail, do you understand that I have many enemies?” (Miller, I, lines 82-84). Here, Parris explains that he suspects his “enemies,” members of the church, have a desire to remove him from his job and will be intolerant to any questionable activity. Later, when Abigail accuses Tituba, the reader learns of the townspeople’s intolerance of not only witchcraft, but of Tituba’s status, race, and practices. When Hale asks Abigail what Tituba said in the forest, Abigail tells him, “I know not, she spoke Barbados” (Miller, I, line 886). Tituba already has slight intolerance shown towards her because of the class as a servant from Barbados, but once they find out she speaks Barbados, accusation after accusation falls on her. In the Puritan church, their religion is the only tolerable religion, so for her to be speaking from a different one is interpreted as an act against God. Also, because she is a servant, she can be blamed for anything, knowing that there is little toleration if she tries to defend herself.
After countless people are accused, the scene shifts to the courthouse where judges put people on trial for witchcraft. Judge Danforth and Judge Hawthorne,
Arthur Miller was a playwright and a political activist speaking up addressing societal issues. One of his most well-known works being The Crucible, addressed McCarthyism and its absurd purpose. Miller, creator of The Crucible was blacklisted, and accused of being a communist along with many other entertainers (“Arthur Miller”). Through all this ignorance and delusional fear, Arthur Miller was inspired to explore the similarities and parallels of the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism.
Hypocrites Lies are told to protect people and to harm other people. Lies can get out of control and can lead to some serious damage to people's lives. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play about puritans and their strange beliefs. A group of friends were caught in the woods doing witchcraft. But will not admit it and blame it on a slave named tituba.
In a Puritan belief system, behaviors that don’t seem real or can’t be explained were viewed as witchcraft. If witchcraft was believed to be the cause then the victim or the person accused would be tried in front of the court and possibly if believed guilty they would be hung and if they confessed however, they would still be punished but not in such a severe way. Elizabeth Proctor has been accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams, if found guilty she will hang. Abigail Williams has agreed to go to trial and is arrested
I believe it was the court’s disbelief in hard evidence and total trust in children’s false accusations that led to the Salem Witch Trials. While some could say that it was because of the children giving these false accusations, I think that the grown adults could have (and should have) recognized that they could not base hundreds of condemnations on the whims of children and their antics. Arthur Miller takes us through the time when children could tear down a person’s entire life and reputation by putting on a show in this story The Crucible. Through the lack of common sense and belief in children’s antics, the court affected the problem more than the outside influences ever could.
The times back then were terrible. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 about The Salem Witch Trials of 1692.McCarthyism was the “witch hunt” for the communist in 1953.the parallels between The Crucible and McCarthyism are naming names, lack of proof ,and reststance. The first reason they are parallel is because of naming names. Hollywood director Elia Kazan went in front of the HUAC twice. The first time he did not confess and names.
Tituba is a woman from Barbados who practices what the Puritans view as, “black magic.” Of course, she mainly implements this because the conniving Abigail Williams who manipulates her into summoning it. But when Reverend Hale finds out all that Tituba knows, he relies on her to speak the truth. “Hale, with rising exaltation: You are God’s instrument put in our hands to discover the Devil’s agents among us. You are selected, Tituba, you are chosen to help us cleanse our village.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on the true events of the Salem witch trials. Set in the 17th century The Crucible told the story of a town that ensued a hunt for witches, caused by the accusations of Salem 's young girls and their ring leader Abigail Williams. Arthur Miller wrote this play to symbolize 1950’s McCarthyism. Most readers are unfamiliar with McCarthyism. So for a brief explanation, McCarthyism was carried out under senator Joseph McCarthy during 1950-1954 against alleged communist in the US government and in other institutions.
The Crucible, published in 1953 by Arthur Miller is a very popular book written about the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. While most people use the book to study the Witch Trials, with closer examination it is easy to conclude that it is a direct allegory to the Red Scare and the McCarthy era of 1950s America. An allegory is an extended metaphor in which the characters or objects in the story represent an outside meaning. The Crucible is an allegory to the Red Scare and the McCarthy era drastically by its plot, characters, and the flow and outcome of the court trials. To begin with, The Crucible is an allegory because the plot of the book closely resembles the events that occurred during the Red Scare.
Throughout history the fear of corruption and change has compelled people to go to drastic measures to prevent it. The Crucible, a play by arthur Miller, is set in an environment of religious citizens who fear that the devil and witchcraft will corrupt their society. Much like The Crucible, McCarthyism caused the citizens in America to fear corruption of the government by communism. Arthur Miller used his play the crucible as a direct response to McCarthyism and through this play Miller writes about the Salem witch trials during the McCarthy period to comment on how history repeats itself. The social and political factors in The Crucible resemble those in America during the red scare and McCarthyism.
Although, many people that were condemned weren’t actually apart of the Communist Party, (under McCarthyism around 1950-1954) they got blacklisted or lost their jobs. This social injustice is also portrayed in The Crucible as its characters face the Salem Witch Trials. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as his own reaction to the injustice of McCarthyism. Miller’s purpose was to show how people accused each other with false denunciations because of their fear, jealousy and solely hatred of one another under McCarthyism.
Arthur Miller makes many different connections to the acts of Senator McCarthy throughout The Crucible. The Salem Witch Trials display many similarities to the acts of Communism in the 1950’s. First of all, false accusations and accusations made without any hard evidence are seen in both The Crucible and the acts of Senator McCarthy. John Proctor in The Crucible was put accused and put on trial for taking part or concealing witchcraft without any evidence of this actually happening. Just like Proctor, Arthur Miller was accused for being a communist during the McCarthy era, although nothing could prove this.
The Crucible is a story by Arthur Miller this story was released during the Mccarthyism era and is written to relate what is going on during Mccarthyism time and compared to what had happened during the time of the Salem witch trials. The setting or the crucible will impact the characters, the plot and the tone of the story. The setting of The Crucible affected the characters because during this period of time Salem Massachusetts was a Puritan colony. The Puritans were very strict people, for example on page 1154 of Arthur Miller's The Crucible Paris the town's Minister threatens to beat his slave Tituba “ You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to death Tituba” that statement says that the fact that Parris is going to whip Tituba to death if she doesn't do what he says and confess that he is willing to kill anyone who does not follow the rules. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953, as a response to McCarthyism, which is, in general, accusing people of crimes with little to no proof. It ran rampant through the United States during the Second Red Scare through the early 1950s (exactly when Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible). In The Crucible, Miller juxtaposes the leaders, who rationally think for themselves, and the followers, who believe what everybody else believes, through irony, imagery, and denotation. The Crucible is riddled with irony, and Arthur Miller utilizes situational and dramatic irony to show the difference between followers and leaders.
Arthur Miller constructs his play upon the famous Salem witch trails. Miller's Crucible was written in the early 1950s. Miller wrote his drama during the brief reign of the American senator Joseph McCarthy whose bitter criticized anti- communism sparkled the need for the United States to be a dramatic anti- communist society during the early tense years of the cold war. By orders from McCarthy himself, committees of the Congress commenced highly controversial investigations against communists in the U.S similar to the alleged Salem witches situation. Convict communists were ordered to confess their crime and name others to avoid the retribution.
And of course the court will not question the people's claims nor will the people question the doings of the court. So people see that the court is not looking very much into and use it to their advantage. Some might say that all Judge Hawthorne was doing was his job and that since the town was very religious, that people's word would be enough evidence because they would not lie because that is a sin.
