James A. Garfield James Garfield beat Ulysses S. Grant out of the 1880 republican nomination for the presidency. Later on became president and the only president to go straight from the House of Representatives to the White House. James Garfield was the 20th president of the United States and was the only president who was a preacher as president. He was well read, outgoing, a baseball fan, and a, “policy wonk.” He would take policies and write detailed calculations of how they work and how different industries worked. In the summer of 1880 he took off from the House of Representatives at least 4 times to go watch baseball showing the people he was an avid baseball fan.
