James Garfield's Presidency

President Garfield’s assassination led to the Pendleton Civil Service Act because when he became president, he did not undergo patronage for a man named Charles Guiteau, who assassinated him because of that. The service act eliminated patronage after his death acted as a reason to rid of patronage and its affect on government jobs.

From a broad perspective, the Republican Party nominee for President in 1868 was Ulysses S. Grant. Evidence from the text that further bolsters this claim is shown when the authors state, “Wrangling between Congress and President Andrew Johnson had soured the people on professional politicians in the Reconstruction era, and the notion still prevailed that a good general would make a good president. Grant was elected as the 18th president in 1868 when he was 46 years old. When Grant moved into the White House he was married to a girl named Julia and had four children: Dent Grant, Nellie Grant, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., and Jesse Root Grant. During his presidency Grant confirmed/passed the fifteenth amendment, Developed and Indian Peace Policy, Sent military to help protect African Americans from terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Grant did not turn to Republican leaders for advice instead, he turned to people he thought he could trust. The lead to some good people for him to turn to and some that doubting ones.

Hiram Ulysses Grant, more commonly known as Ulysses. S. Grant, was an army general who later became the 18th president of the United States. It’s a known fact that General Grant's family was one that supported the abolishment of slavery and this later affected Grant's own views on the topic as well. General Grant, unlike many other presidents, also lacked political knowledge; this would later influence his presidency. General Grant's Presidency was considered mostly chaotic as he led the United States into one of its economic depressions, made little effort to handle the reconstruction, and he had poor administrative skills.

The three presidents, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover were the presidents who lead the county of America during 1920s that also affected the lives of every single American by the way they lead the country. Warren Harding was an isolationist who wants to return the America to normalcy. He avoided political and economic alliances with foreign countries in which the anti-immigrant sentiment (nativism) radically increases. Harding reduced the number of immigrants after 1922. Calvin Coolidge who is also became a president, believe in laissez-faire business philosophy and once stated “The chief business of the American people is business”.

Andrew Jackson was from the west, and not a politician making him more of a common man than previous presidents. Serving in the military, being manly, and having a nickname “Old Hickory” made him relatable to the people. Andrew Jackson had become a U.S. Senate after he was a lawyer when he studied it. Andrew Jackson was also a Judge and a U.S. Representative. Andrew Jackson also help to spread democracy.

Andrew Jackson was the first "people’s president”. His humble frontier heritage and heroic title won support throughout the nation. Jackson was in touch with the common man and had respect for him. This for once, allowed the “people” to have a more dominant role in government, which is something that America prides itself upon today. However, this “people’s president” presidency was plagued with controversy.

He became president in 1869 and his second term ended 1877. Grant was a successful president because he signed the Civil Rights Act, Amnesty Act, and helped the 15th Amendment get ratified. The Fifteenth Amendment was ratified in 1869.

President James Anderson Garfield is my president. He was unique because in October 1862, he represented Ohio 's 19th Congressional District. Garfield became a member of the Radical Republicans. I’m presenting all the positives of the president, James Anderson Garfield during his presidency. He was the 20th president of the United States.

Garfield is an often overlooked president. As Vowell describes it, “The most famous thing ever said about President James A. Garfield is about how nobody has any idea who the hell he was” (Vowell 1578). Garfield, simply put, was a president that did his job in a rather non-controversial manner. This all changed the day of July 2, 1881 when Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau. Guiteau believed that God had commanded him to shoot the president.

Political Patronage is the act of exchanging jobs or other favors in exchange for political support. President James A. Garfield was elected, with his Stalwart vice president, Chester A. Arthur. James Garfield was an energetic and smart man, ready to dive into his duties as the new president of the United States of American. He would never get the chance though, as he was immediately ensnared in a conflict between his secretary of state, James G. Blaine, and Blaine's Stalwart nemesis, Senator Roscoe Conkling. In the midst of these arguments, an unhappy and mentally ill man named Charles J. Guiteau, who was also a Stalwart, shot President James Garfield in the back at a railroad station in Washington.
