The poem "Fear" by G. Mcstrawl uses many different types of figurative language. This poem talks about the feelings of a mother and misery in losing her daughter. She is fearful of her daughter leaving her. The poem uses repeated metaphors, imagery, and symbols to show the emotion and feelings of the mother. The author uses the metaphor, " I don't want them to turn her into a swallow" multiple times.

In the narrative poem “ Orange ” Gary Soto he uses personalities and it helps the reader understand. Gary Soto uses “ Tiered like bleachers,” a smile. It helped me understand figurative language about the narrative. Also, the poem says “The first time I walked with a girl, I was twelve, Cold, and weighted down with two oranges in my Jacket, “ which describes the narrator’s Characterization, the reason he had two oranges in his pocket. Gary Soto uses indirect Characterization to use his narratives.

Novelist, Tim O’Brien writes short semi true stories about his and other’s experiences in the Vietnam war. O’Brien wanted to explain to his audience what happens in war and how it effects people after the fact. O’Brien really helps his audience acknowledge how much war really does change people. Tim’s dynamic use of symbolism, imagery, and figurative language emphasizes the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that people experience during and after the war. O’Brien begins by analyzing the thoughts of sorrow and loss overwhelm the Vietnam veterans upon their return back home.

Furthermore the use of figurative language grabbed the reader's attention while demonstrating the importance of the power of words. The poem was short with three verses yet it was one of the impactful poems of the book. The words used were dark but significant which ended up making the readers relate back to their own life and makes them dive into similar feelings they have had. Power was shown through deep, sharp and cutting verses about loneliness. This specific theme was important to the book because without it people wouldn't be able to truly relate back to the

One example from the book that supports this is: ¨One Little soldier boy left all alone he went and hanged himself and then there were none¨ (Green) This is the last line from the poem hanging in each of the guests rooms. A poem that foreshadows the deaths of each of the guests in one way or another. This quote relates to involving the reader in a story because this is the line of the poem that refers to the death of Vera. This was foreshadowed earlier in the book before her death by the hook in her room:

In the story, Toby Tyler, the author, James Otis, demonstrates his skill in using figurative language. To begin with, he describes Toby Tyler as having, “a face as speckled as any turkey’s egg”, in an example of simile, where he compares Toby’s face to a turkey’s egg.

His first example of his figurative language is a simile.   He writes “Like a drop of  rain, he sinks into thy depths with a bubbling groan”  He is comparing rain to how  someone can become depressed or have a series of negative emotions.  It is a great  way to compare rain to emotions because it shows how severe the depression was.

one of the many times he uses imagery throughout this story is when the narrator says, “on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows” (Pg 1). By using imagery to compare walking through the neighborhood as walking through a graveyard shows that it is completely silent and there is no activity in any of the houses. Most people wouldn't describe their neighborhood as a graveyard, this also develops the mood. Another time he uses imagery is when the narrator says, “The street was silent and long and empty, with only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk in mid-country” (1). This shows mood because the narrator describes him as a hawk in mid-country, that means that he is all alone in what he feels to be like a barren or abandoned place.

The effect of the figurative language is that the reader can tell how prevalent the hope and fear was, it was as real and as much as the physical money and food. This also creates an emotional effect, as the audience can relate to the hard times that Alexie faced.

An example of figurative language that she used was when the Scarred Man told her “now the truth is like a tightrope that you can’t walk forever”. In this statement he is telling Grace that she will eventually have to fall by that he mean that she will eventually know the truth about her mother's murderer and that it will hurt her just like falling from a tightrope. Afterward when she figured out that the Scarred Man was right about him not murdering her mother she said “The Scarred Man was right-the truth was like a tightrope and eventually I had to fall”. In this part of the story she is basically saying that she feels a lot of regret and pain for judging the Scarred man without knowing the truth by comparing it to a fall off a tightrope. Junior’s power is shown through Alexie’s use of figurative language. When Junior’s basketball team were doing very well he uses a hyperbole to express how he feels about it. “We just killed people, winning by double figures every time” (181). “Killing people” in this sense means that Junior’s team were winning many games and were much better than opposing teams.
