He ended his presidency March 4,1801 where he was succeeded by Thomas Jefferson. John Adams was the first president who was in the Federalist Party, the party believed in independent thinking. The government also moved the capital from Philadelphia to Washington DC, so he was the first president to live in the White House. During his presidency there was a war between France and Great Britain going on. This was causing many problems for American merchants and intense partisanships around the world. His first year was America fighting in the Quasi- War. The Quasi- war was between United States of America and the French, it last from 1798 to 1800. This war was mainly because America didn't want to continue paying off their debt to France on land that they already own. This caused the French to get furious and so they retaliated by attacking American ships. Adams decided to fight back which later on they both calmed down and had the Treaty of Mortefontaine. This treaty ended all the fights in the Caribbean and also ended our relationship with the French American alliance. He took action and choose forty-two justices of the peace and sixteen circuit court justices for the District of Columbia, but his plan later failed after the documents were not delivered on time and new president Thomas Jefferson choose not to submit the completed documents. William Marbury one of the recipients that was chosen by John Adams, refuse to accept Jefferson’s decision and took matters into his own hands. The facts of the case were vividly sought out, Marbury was to be appointed as justice of peace and his paperwork was completed and ready to be submitted before he could take office.

He really wanted his children to have the best education possible, just like his father; he was very strict with his children and wanted the best for them no matter how hard it was or how hard he had to push his children. He kind of had a temper, most of the time when he got mad he would throw his wig on the ground and stomp on it, because he would get so frustrated. His death date was the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration independence.

His term as president was unfortunately marred with controversy. He supported and signed the contentious Sedition Act in 1798. Adams went on to build up the army and navy as result of an undeclared naval war (later called the Quasi-War) with France (1798–1800). The Sedition Act authorized the deportation or imprisonment of aliens viewed as “dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States.” The Act unfortunately went well past precluding a violent revolution.

A bad move on Jefferson's part was the Embargo act, which closed American ports to foreign trade, which hurt the economy (1807).
