Women: Facing Inequality In “Letters between John and Abigail Adams”, by John and Abigail Adams, Abigail begins by addressing to her husband her concerns regarding women being underestimated. She tells John, “Why then, not put it out of the power of the vicious and the Lawless to use us with cruelty and indignity with impunity” (Abigail 12). In this quote, it is a continuation of her many concerns for John to understand women are more capable of doing things than what the men have in mind. She feels that the women deserve to be equal to the men and they deserve more rights than what they had then. Abigail then begins to tell John, “Men of Sense in all Ages abhor those customs which treat us only as the vassals of your Sex” (12). With years of rebellions and protests made against many of these issues, women have come a long way from where they used to be. A big movement that was established was called the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This was the time where many protests were occurring so that these women would be allowed to receive the same rights men had. They mainly focused on the right to vote and hold an office which later, eventually passed. If women did not stand up for themselves then, women today would not be able to experience all of the freedom they have. Women today are able to receive the education they want and build their own career. However, they do not have the full equality due to men getting paid higher than women along with women getting paid higher than others based on their racial background. Will women ever get paid the same as men do? Or will women continue to be paid less than men? With more and more awareness being brought up about these issues, one day there will be equal rights for all women no matter what their race
Throughout Abigail Adams letter, uses of rhetorical strategies and devices are presented to advise and give her son advice. Being a part of the upper class and her husband being a U.S. diplomat and later becoming president, her strength of knowledge and authority is high. Because of how successful Adams' husband is, she hopes her son will follow in his footsteps. Various rhetorical strategies throughout Adam's essay will be used to identify hints and present advice to her son for future reference.
The third rhetorical device, Abigail Adams uses is logical repetition. Mrs. Adams was a logical woman and used this to drive the point that her son has great things that lie ahead of him. She mentions the word “great” a series of times to lift her son up. For example, she says that he has been endowed with “greater advantages” that he hasn't come to realize yet. The 19th amendment stated that no one will be denied the right to vote based on your sex. This changed everything for the women in the US.
