John Proctor In The Crucible

A courageous character is that of which shows bravery, one who is not deterred by danger or pain. There are many characters who exhibit courage throughout The Crucible. However, there is one character in particular who stands out the most throughout the play. John Proctor seems to be the most courageous because he does several things no other character would even think of doing. Several times throughout the play, Proctor speaks out in opposition to Reverend Parris.

John agrees to confess falsely .But he refuses to accuse anyone else of being a witch. The court insists that the confession must be made public. Proctor became filled with rage and tears it up. Proctor goes to the gallows and is hanged.

In Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible” there is one character who stands out from the rest, who catches your attention throughout the story, and his name is John Proctor. A tragic hero is a member of the community that has a tragic flaw that eventually will lead straight to a tragic fail. Through his good and bad deeds, his adultery, and his stuck up pride, would Mr. John Proctor be considered a tragic hero? John Proctor is a very prominent man in this community. He helps work the fields, he takes the load of people who can’t do it, and he is just all around a town favorite.

John Proctor, a character from the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is aggressive, caring, and brave. We can see that Proctor is aggressive because in act III he tells Mary Warren, “I’ll whip the Devil out of you!” This is not the first time we have seen Proctor threating to whip somebody we also see it later inside of act III when he threatens to whip the girls when they start lying inside of court. This demonstrates Proctor’s aggressiveness towards other people.

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth the evil things” (KJV, Matt. 12:35). What makes a good man? A good man is one who follows Christ in every way that he can. Is he perfect? No; the Bible states, “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (KJV, Eccles.

Although his wife Elizabeth forgave him, he judges himself as "a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct. " The affair between them caused the start of witchery and accusation due to Abigail being jealous of Elizabeth Proctor and her relationship with John. As accusations get worst and people are hanged, Proctor knows Abigail and the girls are lying and the only way to stop it is to confess and come clean of what happend with Abigail. He knows what he has to do but since he wants to protect his reputation he doesn't say anything. Abigail then goes on to accuse Elizabeth so she can be hanged and keep proctor to herself.

In order to classify someone as a martyr, one must first identify just what exactly a martyr is. By definition a martyr is someone who makes great sacrifices for a principle or cause that is larger than self-gain. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible; there are numerous characters who have the ability to be considered as a martyr. But alas, one character who is commonly referred as a tragic hero, stands out more than the others. John Proctor is one of the main protagonists in Miller’s play.

The Crucible Essay In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, John Proctor is facing the decision of living but ruining his friends’ reputation as well as his own, or dying and defending the remaining amount of his goodness. Proctor chooses the ladder and dies to protect his friends and himself to prove he still has some goodness and for forgiveness of his past sins. What makes his claim believable is the fact that John Proctor refuses to give Danforth the confession with the argument that he would like to defend his name, and his friend’s name aswell. As he states “They think to go like saints.

John Proctor is a respected farmer in the play The Crucible. The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials of 1692-1693. The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller.

This shows that John is a merciful being and desires forgiveness from his wife and God, therefore demonstrating traits of a good man. Furthermore, John has a heated argument with his wife, due to his encounter with Abigail, alone. Although, he thinks his wife will doubt him, she states on the contrary, “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John - only somewhat bewildered” (55).

He was given the choice to either confess to being apart of witchcraft and be spared or not confess and get hanged. He is allowed to talk this over with his wife and at first they decide it would be better to confess even though they know he didn’t do anything! At this point in the play John realizes that it is not the right thing to do. He says “ How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul now give me your name.”

Abigail wants to be with John so that she starts to make false accusations against Elizabeth in order to put her in jail. “The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’ house tonight, and without word nor warnin’, she falls to the floor. Like a struck beast, he says, and screamed a scream that a bull would weep to hear. And he goes to save her, and stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly he draw a needle out.”

The best character (The crucible) John proctor was the most admirable character in the play because he sacrifices himself for his for his children, also he was a good husband and because he was much known in the town he had a lot of problems and also a lot of things to do like, takes care of his children and a ranch that he has. In act 4 the author wrote “Because I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (page1232) Act4. That John mean in this seen is that he was regretful about lying, and because, of him a lot of people was hang he apprehend that lying is not good and he needed to pay for his act .

John is put on a trail and won’t confess to witchcraft, so he is hanged. The whole reason Abigail started all this witchcraft mess was so that she could get rid of Elizabeth and marry John, and John is the one who ends up getting killed. If Abigail and John never would have had an affair, then Abigail wouldn’t have wanted to marry him, and she wouldn’t have asked Tituba to do Voodoo, which is what gets the girls in trouble to start with. John and Abigail’s affair caused them to have a complicated relationship, which turned into Abigail doing Voodoo, which led to the girls getting caught and being accused of witchcraft. In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
