I’m afraid that I haven’t much time left as the rope will be my end. There is so much I wish to tell you, but I will have to make do with my remaining time. I hope to make you understand why I chose such a horrid fate. But first, I must address my betrayal of your mother. To think your mother was sick and in need of my help while I was with another women. I know what you must think of me and I deserve every bit of hatred you have of me. I am no saint. It was at this moment I had lost my goodness.
After being accused of witchcraft, I was asked to sign a confession so that I would not have to die for my alleged crimes. The idea of signing a confession made me ask the question, what is John Proctor? If it were not for the incident with Abigail William the answer would be of course a man built on integrity and honesty. A man who would never lie about a

John Proctor did not sign the testimony because he wanted to protect his name. In my opinion he was excessively prideful and foolish. If it would have been me, I would have signed the testimony so that I could 've lived. He should have admitted that he was consorting with the devil instead of hanging, he would still be able to be with his family if he would have been smarter about his decisions. John Proctor was being selfish as well when he chose to die instead of sign the testimony.
What Makes Someone a Tragic Hero? What would you do if you were involved in hysteria? How would you try to stop it from hurting the people who are most important to you? Would you let your own secrets stop you from doing the right thing?
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is categorized as a dramatic tragedy, and all tragedies, by definition, have a tragic hero. So who is that hero? In this story, it would be John Proctor. According to Aristotle there are five characteristics of a tragic hero, he must have a flaw or error of judgement, he must cause his own downfall, he must recognize that he caused his own downfall, he must have pride, and his fate must be greater than he deserved. In this play, John Proctor has all of these characteristics.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. John Proctor was a man of great integrity and knew he did nothing wrong. He was given the choice to confess and lie or be hung. Being the honest and stubborn man that he was, he decided his name was more important than his life. John struggled both internally and with others while trying to fight for what he thought was right.
He jails and sentences many to death for refusing to ‘admit’ that they were witches. He encourages Proctor to sign the testimony even though he knows it is a lie shows how truly bad he is as he says ‘Come then, sign your testimony’ Protagonist: John Proctor he’s a protagonist is related to Proctor 's choice to take a high moral ground at the end and die rather than lying to save himself—this shows a change of character in Proctor. In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", John Proctor is our passive protagonist as he tries to save his wife and others that were accused of witchcraft. Unfortunately, his attempt was in vain and his evidence had backfired. His knowledge did not stop the witch trials because of his self-respect, and the children's high reputations, and Abigail's tactful nature. John Proctor valued his self-respect because it made him confident and helped him stand up for what he believed in. John proctor's name was synonymous with honor and integrity and was most respected in Salem.
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife told John to do what he thinks is best, disagreeing with the ideas proposed by Reverend Hale, to confess to the court. Reverend Hale’s
John Proctor, Deputy Governor Danforth, and Abigail Williams were worried about their reputation in town, and they were willing to commit many sins and harm others to prevent this from happening. To begin with, John Proctor was seen as a good citizen. He was well-respected among his neighbors and other people in Salem because of his upright morals. He had an affair with his old servant, Abigail Williams. He tried to keep this hidden from the people to keep his good name.
Dear Diary, Last night I was almost caught by Uncle Parris when the girls and I were out “dancing” in the woods. We weren’t really dancing though, I was trying to make a wish come true. I wished that my beloved John Proctor would love me and that we could spend the rest of eternity together. Deep down inside I also hoped that maybe this whole scene, that they call witchery, might have John pay more attention to me and notice that I am the right woman for him.
Whilst trying to prove Abigail and the other girls were pretending, John confesses, “I have known her [Abigail], sir” (3.110). The fact that he is willing to confess such a heavy sin for this purpose is a huge deal. He willingly, albeit reluctantly, soils his name and reputation to bring the truth to light. In the end, Proctor refuses to give a false confession that would condemn the others who were falsely accused. He decided what he felt was right and refused to stray from it.
John Proctor is a farmer that lives on the outermost part of Salem, MA. John had an affair with Abigail Williams and his wife found out and now does not fully trust him but John still loves his wife. Proctor is widely respected in the Salem community. However, he has a secret that threatens his reputation. He cheated on his wife Elizebeth Proctor with Abigail Williams. As a result, he has a strong internal conflict regarding his integrity. Proctor is a benevolent man at heart, however he has sinned according to puritan law.
John Proctor's main flaw was his excessive pride which sealed his fate. I myself felt his death transformed Salem’s ways of thinking and increased their own knowledge. Proctor's life completely started going downhill when Abigail accused John’s loved ones who then were sent to jail, or executed. John Proctor was a man of goodness and pride which cleansed his soul after he suffered a tragic death, and became a symbol of purity and greatness for others to
The first impressive characteristic of John Proctor is his bravery. Speaking out against the “afflicted” girls in the way he did could cause serious question of him as a person. From the court’s standpoint John could be seen as directly opposing the court, which would have him jailed, or could even have him be accused of witchcraft. Also, he would have had to have known that Abigail Williams would have immediately accused him of being a witch once he spoke out against them. However, that did not stop him from delivering the truth to the court.
