John Proctor's Actions In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

In the book, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a man by the name of John proctor is met with a very hard life decision. He had been in prison for quite some time as to being accused of witchcraft. Proctor had also cheated on his wife, with the girl that has caused all of this witchcraft mess. He was struck with a rather hard decision at a quick moments time. Would he confess to sleeping with another woman to the town?

In The Crucible John Proctor started the play as a hypocrite who was unwilling to admit that he was not perfect. Once Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft, John was outraged because Abigail told John that her and her friends were dancing in the woods. Infuriated that Abigail would murder innocent people John tries to turn Danforth against Abigail. When Danforth does not see a legitimate reason to stop trusting Abigail John is forced to confess his affair with Abigail. But when Elizabeth is asked about John’s affair, Elizabeth acted like she did not know what Danforth was talking about.

What would you do to save the person you loved? In the tragic play, “The Crucible”, Arthur Miller tells the story of a group of girls who began to accuse people of witchery in a puritan community. The accusations began to spread from neighbor to neighbor. In the end witchery isn't the biggest issue in the town but adultery committed by a man named John Proctor. In John Proctor's final moments he confessed his sin to save his town and wife.

In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, John Proctor has been in many conflicts though the book like dealing with the court, his wife might die for being accused witchcraft, religious beliefs, and himself. Thought out the entire book it was about John vs Abigail. In act one John bumps into Abigail when he went to visits to Parris to talk about the rumors about witchcraft. Abigail start throwing herself onto John Proctor Abigail also start telling him how much she misses him and how she still want to be with him but John is married with Elizabeth. John rejects her be saying “I will cut off my hand before I'll even reach for you again” (Miller 22).

In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller preserving one’s reputation was important to many of the story’s characters. Three of the characters that found preserving their reputation important were John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren. John Proctor was a well respected man in Salem. The town’s people thought highly of him. When he was accused of witchery he denied it.

ohn Proctor is an aggressor who employs gaslighting. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in the 1950s as a way of pointing out the insanity of the Communist Red Scare. During the Red Scare the House Un-American Activities Committee, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, would predatorily target and accuse American citizens of being communists. In The Crucible, I argue that John Proctor could have prevented the widespread panic in Salem by confessing his crimes earlier, avoiding Abigail, and speaking out publicly against the allegations. John Proctor is to blame for every issue within The Crucible because he refused to accept accountability for his own behavior and instead placed the entire blame on Abigail when the text says”if she is

John Proctor could be considered a tragic hero in The Crucible. A tragic hero is a person who a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall. John is also a very respected man in Salem and he had a prominent role in his community. WIth every tragic hero they have a great flaw that can help with their downfall. Therefore we are lead to believe that John Proctor is a tragic hero.

The events in Salem can be attributed to many people, as the town became a hysteric place, with no room for judgement or reason. The people who were at the center of the blame are fairly obvious. The lust and jealousy that filled A. Williams made her a main instigator of the salem events, along with J. Proctor, as he was the one to cheat on his wife with her, starting this whole situation. The other main instigators are the Putnams, who quickly escalated the hysteria by having their daughter testify against people of the town and pushing others into accusations.

Is she to blame? In The Crucible there are several people that could be blamed for the unfortunate events that happened in Salem. However, as usual there is this one character that takes part in more than one incriminating situation. For instance, Abigail took part in an affair with John Proctor.

In some way’s Reverend Hale’s return to Salem was to save the accused starting with John Proctor. In Author Miller’s Crucible, Reverend Hale believes if he can get Mr. Proctor to confess others who are accused will follow in his footsteps. Hale uses Elizabeth, Mr. Proctors wife to accomplish the convincing. John brings the matter to Elizabeth before she gets the chance to bring up the subject of matter. Sickening with fear, but faith inside her Elizabeth tells John to as he wishes.

What does it mean to be a good person? Being a good person is reflecting certain qualities such as honesty, faithfulness, and trust. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor does not portray these qualities of a good man. Proctor was puritan living in Salem. As a puritan, he should have held showed these high morals, but that was certainly not the case.

In The Crucible, Arthur Miller develops John Proctor's conflict with guilt through metaphors and hyperboles, demonstrating how although guilt can destroy a person, taking action to face one’s guilt through sacrifice can help one change for the better by offering a chance at redemption.

Destroying a confession to the courts is unimaginable. However if that confession was fabricated to save face it would be thrown out of the courts. In the case of John Proctor in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, he takes matters of the courts into his own hands and does away with his fickle confession. Many wonder why he would throw away his one bargaining chip at receiving mercy. The reason why, as it always is when you come down to the nature of men, is he wanted to die.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller, was a play full of drama, romance and crime. John Proctor tearing up his confession to recover his sense of goodness is a believable act. The reason beginning he doesn’t want to tarnish the reputations of the good christian men and women that died before him. John Proctor is a sinful man; he committed adultery, he plows on sundays, and he only goes to church once a month. Proctor says “Since we built the church there were pewter candlesticks upon the altar; Francis Nurse made them, y’know, and a sweeter hand never touched the metal.

Proctors final act was honor. Proctors actions were noble, he was a very honorable man. His actions really helped him and his family name. In the passage of the book ¨The Crucible” John Proctor says ¨i have given you my soul, let me keep my family name.¨ This statement is very noble.
