Jonathan Zimmerman is saying that while many people believe as technology evolves and advances that it will make education better and better. Students claim there is nothing wrong with being on social media while doing school work is not detrimental to their education but instead claim they are simply, "mutitasking". Students now believe that everything in education can be done easier and more efficient through using their computers and cellular devices. But when it comes down to the facts, studies that have been conducted over and over again have shown that those who claim to be "mutitaskers" preform worse than the average person in just about every skill tested. Other studies show that just by reading something off a computer screen or a phone screen causes you to retain and comprehend less of what you are reading. All technology is created differently and has different functions, there is a lot of technology that cannot be argued whether it has advanced education. Because there is technology that is in all classrooms today that teachers now would not be able to teach with out. This technology adds a convenience to teaching that makes it more efficient. For example, with a chalk board once you ran out of room that was it, you would then have to spend time to erase the board before continuing with the lesson. But, now with the new technology of Smartboards you never have to worry about running out of space you can just extend the page and keep writing. “Doing Gender” by West and Zimmerman is similar to Butler’s “Performative Acts and Gender Constitution.” However, West and Zimmerman build upon the ideas that Butler puts forth. Butler focuses on gender as performance and how gender is made up by specific actions. While West and Zimmerman take the concept of performance and constitution and applies it to a new concept, the sex category and how sex categories and gender are intertwined in society. Sex categories and gender, according to West and Zimmerman, are different and interconnected.

Eventually, old traditions will be broken and change into new traditions that will eventually be broken again. Education was bound to intertwine with technology, as almost everything in the world is slowly become technological. Our educational system is failing us. The United States of America is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world but statistics are showing that our government/educational system is failing us; children/young adults of the nation. Being a student of a middle ranked school in Arizona, I personally have had a first-hand feel for how good and/or bad teaching affects students. Just in high school I have had teachers that would just assign websites as our lesson and even teachers that sit at their desk for the whole hour; don’t even go over the mindset, homework, and maybe only show one problem so that we’ll know what the homework will be like. In a 2011 study conducted by Wade Jacobsen and Renata Forste on “Academic and Social Outcomes of Electronic Media Use Among College Students,” they concluded from more than 1,000 undergraduates that 2.45 hours are spent on the internet, and an hour is usually spent watching television. High school students spend roughly about 2.3 hours on technology and media everyday, and as new media platforms come out, more time is spent on them. The temptations of answering someone or looking at who liked your picture on Instagram causes great disruptions in studying and workplaces. When a student’s final product is not up to the standards or is incomplete, it can severely affect their grades in school.
Many critics may argue and say that technology in education is dangerous. It can waste a students’ time by getting him or her sidetracked by distractions they find online. However when students avoid technology in education, they have to spend long hours, days, maybe even weeks searching for certain information in various different books. Students that really want to learn will force discipline upon themselves. Even if students didn’t use technology, anything could easily distract them when studying.
