Torn knee ligament
Causes:
Torn knee ligament occurs when at least one of the main ligaments inside the knee gets sprained and the condition gets to harsher so the ligament ruptures. Basically, there are four main ligaments; Medial collateral ligament(MCL), Lateral collateral ligament(LCL), Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) and Posterior cruciate ligament(PCL). All these ligaments have different functions.
- MCL is located between femur and tibia. It helps protect the knee joint from the outer side forces, and it controls the amount of movement of knee. For the MCL injury, it happens mostly during the sports, especially in soccer and in rugby when the players have to tackle each other. When they tackle, their legs are stretched and the outer

It helps to protect the knee joint from inner side forces, and it controls the amount of movement knee makes. Since legs protects the inner side of the knees, LCL injury is not common. However, same as the MCL injury, an LCL injury occurs when patients have to tackle without any protection.
- ACL is located inside the knee joint. It connects anterior tibia and posterior femur diagonally. It controls the backward and forward movements of the knee. Also, it regulates the tibia bone from moving in front of the femur. ACL injury usually happens when the people suddenly twist their knee in the opposite way after they jump and land. So, volleyball and basketball players are most likely to have this injury. Also, when the patient has ACL injury, most of them also has other injuries in different ligaments.
- And, PCL located inside the knee joint. It connects posterior tibia and anterior femur diagonally. It controls the backward and forward movements of the knee. ACL and PCL are diagonal to each other so they also known as cross ligaments. PCL injury is not a common knee injury since PCL is more secure than ACL. PCL injury mostly happens when the patients have car accidents in the situations where the knee hits a part in the car. It might be hard to notice the symptoms, but most of the patient of PCL injury experience limping or awkward
When injuries of this type and severity happen to the tibia and thalus the joint rarely returns to its normal function. As the blood supple to the surrounding cartilage is damaged leading to arthritis and the the bones never truly align correctly. Dave will have to be traction to try and straighten the ankle while under heavy medication for both pain and two relax the muscles. 4. Cole's meniscal injury caused a "locked " knee - he couldn't extend his leg fully.
The ACL crosses diagonally in the middle of the knee behind the patella and it connects the tibia to the femur. Its function is to prevent the tibia from sliding in front of the femur and to prevent overextension of the knee. The LCL connects the femur to the fibula and its function is to keep the lateral side of the knee stable. RG3’s injury is due to an ACL and LCL tear. The ACL was torn when his foot planted in the field and his knee cut into internal rotation.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament The ACL is a ligament in the outer leg next to the knee. Most anterior cruciate ligament tears require surgery, unless the orthopedic surgeon says otherwise. An ACL tear is the most common injury and in the knee. These injuries are happening more frequently in teenagers now. The ACL can be strengthened to help prevent it from tearing.
The cartilage can be damaged or worn by previous injury such as an elbow dislocation or fracture. Another reason for this injury to occur would be the deterioration of the joint cartilage due to aging. This injury typically affects the weight bearing joints. However osteoarthritis least affects the elbow joint because of its well matched joint surfaces, strong stabilizing ligaments and it can tolerate large forces without becoming unstable. Osteoarthritis is diagnosed based on the symptoms and x-rays of the elbow joints (which shows the arthritic changes).
There are two different options you have after a torn ligament in the knee has occurred, you can undergo surgery or let the ligament heal naturally. Some reasons that you may go the natural route are the following: Partial tears in the ligament, young children with open growth plates, stability is not an issue and not involved in any activities that rely on your ACL daily (Cluett 26). It may be the best option to stay away from surgery if you are not involved in heavy physical activities and take care and rest your leg on its own. How this is done is with rest, ice, compressing and elevation, which is commonly referred to as RICE (Zelman 2). You can rest byy using crutches and laying down to take the weight off the injured leg, and ice should be applied every two hours for twenty minutes at a time while awake.
The ACL is most often torn due to a twisting motion from sudden change in direction or pivoting that occurs on a locked knee. (Gianotti, Marshall, Hume & Bunt, 2009). According to Sports Medicine Australia 1 (n.d.), majority of ACL injuries occur in high demand sports including Australian football, netball, basketball and skiing. This can result in serious mobility consequences and pain for athletes, as well as cause emotional distress due to cost of treatment and time lost from sporting activity. There is little comprehensive Australian data regarding number of ACL injuries that occur each year due to insufficient reporting.
These injuries are from being hit or pushed directly to either side of the knee which will cause a sprain to which ever side has been hit. There
Understanding the cause of sports injury requires a precise description of the injury mechanism. Over two million anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur worldwide annually, and the greater prevalence for ACL injury in young female athletes is one of the major problems in sports medicine. The most common gender differences are reduced knee and hip flexion when landing, increased knee valgus, internal rotation of the femur and high quadriceps activity unbalanced by the hamstrings in female athletes (Renstrom 2013). The female ACL is smaller in length, cross-sectional area, and volume than the male ACL, even after adjusting for body anthropometry (Shultz 2010). The mechanical and molecular properties of the ACL are likely influenced not only by estrogen but also by the interaction of several sex hormones, secondary messengers, remodeling proteins, and mechanical stresses (Shultz 2010).
ACL tears can affect lots of people but with surgery you can come back from an injury better than before. ACL tears are a serious injury because they do not heal themselves so no matter what they will require surgery or rehab to make the knee more stable. Usually it tear by doing athletic stuff such as sports. When the ACL tears people will usually feel a pop of the muscle tearing. Tackling can tear your ACL if you get hit on the side of the knee.
The knee joint is one of the strongest and most important joints in the human body. It allows the lower leg to move relative to the thigh while supporting the body’s weight (Taylor, n.d.) as knee joint is one of the major weights bearing joint in the body. Knee joint plays an important role in our daily lives such as walking, running, sitting and standing. It allows physiological movement such as flexion and extension.
The most common knee injuries and torn ligaments are in football. Some of these injuries could end your college season of football, and you would not even get paid once you have to stop because of an
From 2010 to 2013 players in the NFL suffered 219 ACL tears. That is a very high number for only ACL tears. There is many other knee injuries that are possible to happen. People need to make sure they don’t go back to sports too early after the injury. The risk of reinjury is a lot higher if you return to early.
These knee injuries can affect a player's long term involvement in the sport. Football players also have a much higher chance of ankle sprains due to the surfaces of the fields they play on and cutting motions. Shoulder injuries are also common and the labrum (cartilage bumper surrounding the socket part of the shoulder) is particularly susceptible to injury, especially in offensive and defensive linemen. In addition, injuries to the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) or shoulder are seen in football players. Football players are very susceptible to receiving concussions.
My ACL Tear Journey At The Hospital A quick turn on a soccer field led me to the worst experience in my life. A while back in my sophomore year I tore my ACL while I was practicing for my first soccer game of the school year. I made a quick turn without positioning my feet correctly on the ground. I thought that I broke my knee, but I never knew that after that day I would have experienced the worst day a month after on February 15th.
Women have a higher chance of getting knee injury and men are more likely to get head and shoulder. Knee injuries are one of the most common injuries in skiing. Some knee injuries such as ligament damage can be caused by a minor fall to the skier. This can be treated by rest and ice. Another knee injuries such as Patella dislocation is just the the dislocation of the knee cap.
