Lady Macbeth's Strong Character In Act I Scene V

Aide Pompa ERWC Pd.4 Mr.Lombardi 2016 April 11 Lady Macbeth Lady MacBeth shows that female can be just as ambitious to manipulate her way into MacBeth’s head in a way to achieve power and a guilty conscience. In the opening of the play Lady MacBeth persuades MacBeth to kill King Duncan with her own self ambition. In Act 1 LAdy MacBeth reads the letter from the prophecy of the three witches. She wanted Macbeth to be crowned head so she can be queen and her conscience got the best of her. Lady MacBeth controlled MacBeth with manipulation into killing King Duncan.

Upon learning of the witches’ prophecies, the woman devised a plan which included Macbeth murdering Duncan to take his title (I, iv, 38-40). This scene demonstrates Lady Macbeth’s obvious malicious intent and her malevolent personality. After noticing her husband’s reluctance at executing her plan, she influences him so that Macbeth will conclusively murder Duncan. “ …Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem” (I, vii, 42-3). She continually criticizes him for refusing to kill Duncan, letting him know that what he was doing was considered a cowardly act.

Lady Macbeth’s thoughts and characteristics foreshadow dark events (especially King Duncan’s murder) in the play. The audience learns that King Duncan may die in the near future and that Lady Macbeth will quench her thirst for power when she becomes Macbeth’s queen. Lady Macbeth’s portrayal of her sadistic and covetous characteristics foreshadow dark events in the future of the play, including her demise.

It all starts off with her wanting to take order of what her husband needs to achieve. She claims to want to take her weakness away while being a woman as she speaks on the murder of Duncan. “Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty!” Lady Macbeth is bold and fierce in what she takes authority over. Macbeth follows along Lady Macbeths plan when declaring the murder of Duncan.

Setting off such a unique vibe, Lady Macbeth emits her urgency to gain the greatest amount of power she can. Throughout reading “Macbeth”, the audience discovers many poor qualities about Lady Macbeth. An accessory to the murder, Lady Macbeth, happens to have a greater responsibility for King Duncan’s death than Macbeth. Shockingly, Macbeth didn’t know how to respond to lady Macbeth’s idea to murder King Duncan.

Because Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s decision to murder Duncan, Both face the guilt of the power they abused portrays on the shadows that reflect on them as well as the natural consequences they will face. During the first half of the play, Lady Macbeth expresses her unnatural feelings and this is demonstrated through the corruption of power when she want’s to hire people to kill Duncan because she thinks that Macbeth is too scared. At first, when Lady Macbeth hinted “Their drenchèd natures lies as in a death”(1.7.78). This demonstrates that Lady Macbeth is characterizing corruption of power due to the fact that she want's to kill Duncan, therefore she can be queen of cawdor while Macbeth is king.

While reading her husband's letter, she determines on the course to be pursued, and nothing turns her from that course until the goal of her ambition is reached. When Lady Macbeth hears the Weird Sisters prediction about her husband's becoming king she resolves to persuade Macbeth to remove every obstacle until he becomes king. But Lady Macbeth, harsher as well as more ambitious than her husband, immediately considers the horrible idea of murdering her royal guest, which she urges upon Macbeth. Macbeth later on tells his wife that he has no intent of murdering King Duncan, Lady Macbeth, outraged, calls him a coward and questions his manhood “What beast was ’t, then, That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man.”

The show that Macbeth thought has terrify himself that he think in order to the prophecy come true he has to kill King Duncan. After Lady Macbeth has found out about the witches’ prophecy of Macbeth latter. Her strong desire and ambition of power has led Macbeth to assassinate Duncan by insulted him “wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem 'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting “I

Passage 1 The context of this scene is after Macbeth received his promotion to Thane of Cawdor and he sent a letter to his wife Lady Macbeth, who was at Macbeth’s castle. A messenger gave Lady Macbeth a letter written by Macbeth which described his promotion to Thane of Cawdor. This promotion is ultimately what this excerpt of passage is referring to along with Lady Macbeth’s desire for her husband to further advance up the ranks and seize the crown, which King Duncan currently holds. In this passage, which contains Lady Macbeth’s famous, “Unsex me speech,” Lady Macbeth shakes off her femininity in order to do the dirty work require to overthrow Duncan and install Macbeth as King.

Lady Macbeth: Victim or Monster Lady Macbeth is an extremely unusual character as she is by far, the most complex and domineering female role in all of Shakespeare’s plays. She first appears in the play, plotting the king’s murder but the audience last sees her sleepwalking and drowned in guilt. This suggests that Shakespeare portrays her as a character who cannot be classified as any of the two categories (as a victim or as a monster), but rather as an ambitious woman prepared to go any lengths to achieve what- she believes- she and her husband deserve, but could not handle the consequences of her actions in the end. Following the witches speech, thoughts begin to emerge in Macbeth mind about killing King Duncan to become the king. This desire that Macbeth has to become king overloads him and his wife Lady Macbeth. It was amazing to see Macbeth transform from a loyal soldier to a murderer with blood staining his hands. However, Macbeth wasn’t convinced to assassinate King Duncan and the witches knew it. They decided to come again to Macbeth and poison his thought with more falsehood.

Macbeth himself, is one of the reasons for the tragic events that occurs throughout Shakespeare 's play, Macbeth. Macbeth is known to be a dreadful hero with a troublesome flaw; his flaw, which is ambition, affects him to eventually make poor decisions guided by Lady Macbeth and the witches, and, he is manipulated to secrete his conscience which ultimately leads hims to a path of destruction and to his own death. For instance, when the witches come to tell him his three prophecies, he is Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and will be the king hereafter, his ambition leads him to think that to be king, he must murder Duncan. He says, “My thoughts, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function is smothered in surmise and nothing is, but what is not” (1.3.151-154). Here Macbeth realises that what the witches have told him are still a fantasy, yet he starts to think about murdering the king to become king himself.

Lady Macbeth has many faces and the given extract shows the truest of them all. Shakespeare makes Act1 Scene 5 a striking introduction to Lady Macbeth as her words fit with the theme of witchcraft-and supernatural- as well as deceit. Macbeth is a tragedy that was thought to be performed in 1606- an era when witchcraft was prevalent. Lady Macbeth is a dynamic character and Shakespeare makes this extract so striking by using elements of language, structure and mood. Using language, Shakespeare is able to make this extract so fascinating in terms of introducing Lady Macbeth.

Early in the play, Macbeth and his wife toss around the idea of killing Duncan in order to become the king of Scotland. Lady Macbeth is able to manipulate Macbeth into doing so, Macbeth begins to seem shaken and flustered because of the deed he has done to his cousin. Macbeth then becomes king as told in his prophecy by the three witches, and does what he can in his power to keep that title and begins to lose his path due to ill/rattled thoughts and actions that happen beginning with Duncan’s murder. Macbeth’s introduction in this play begins with his meeting with the three witches or weird sisters.
