In this essay I looked over and analyzed several texts such as speeches, articles, stories, and poems which represents the American vision and what it really means to be an American. To me the American voice signifies the people who have at one point had ability to become something and actually be successful dispute their race, gender and poverty; In other words their background. To Me being an American is a privilege and a blessing, I live in country where I actually have the opportunity to shape my future the way I want it despite of my background unlike many 3rd world countries in this world. To me the best representations for the American voice signifies is a speech written by the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama which is from the 2004 Democratic National Convention and a poem written entitled "I, Too Sing America" by Langston Hughes Patrick Henry in his speech to the Virginia convention entitled "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death," the speaker describes how they (the people of the colonies) shall no longer tolerate the British and how they are in need of liberty or if not given, they shall take death as a substitute; thus "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death". Henry's purpose is to propose a change ; to be given liberty through the use of explanations and past remarks.

Common's 2016 song "Black America Again" featuring Stevie Wonder is an example of a song made in support of racial equality. It draws attention to the challenges Black people face in the pursuit of justice, including racial wage inequality, gentrification, voting suppression, and mass imprisonment.. Common uses rhetorical devices to persuade listeners to envision the Black American story he hopes to rewrite. Common's song "America Black Again" was released at a time of tensions and the Black Lives Matter movement. Common convinces his listeners of the Black America he has seen through rhetorical strategies including ethos, pathos, and logos.

Langston Hughes wrote Let America be America Again explaining that he was never an equal or free in America. He also didn’t just focus on blacks, he also wrote “I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek.” (Hughes 8). Hughes explained that nobody in America is treated right unless a wealthy white man.

American Dream Does the American Still hold the American dream? I believe that it is very possible for a citizen of America to live that tradition American Dream; paying bills without worries, giving their children a start to an even better life then they had and still save enough to live comfortably after they retire to live that happy free life. Hughes Essay Langston Hughes, wrote “Refugee in America”, “I, Too”, and “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”. Hughes lived from February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967 and was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. Hughes was also one of the earliest innovators of the literary art form, jazz poetry. My thesis for the connection of these three poems are that they all relate to oppression and the change that is to come one day.

Langston Hughes uses images of oppression to reveal a deeper truth about the way minorities have been treated in America. He uses his poems to bring into question some of Walt Whitman’s poems that indirectly state that all things are great, that all persons are one people in America, which Hughes claims is false because of all the racist views and oppression that people face from the people America. This oppression is then used to keep the minorities from Walt Whitman in his poem, “Song of Myself”, talks about the connection between all people, how we are family and are brothers and sisters who all share common bonds. There are two arguments being made in the poem, one by the first speaker and one by the second speaker. The argument being made by the first speaker is that American dream is their reality, everyone is treated with the utmost respect. This person is a patriot, a person who believes that what America (or any country) was and always will be a free country. This person is simple minded, this person doesn't see the whole picture, this person doesn't see that thousands are left poor and starving because they were equal to others and that they don't have the same freedom as others. In “Let America Be America Again” Langston Hughes uses an abundant amount of imagery, tone and has a specific style of writing to show how America never was the “America” people thought it was. Hughes uses a lot of imagery when he explains jobs of certain people, “I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the negro, servant to you all…”.

America is well known as the land of the free and the home opportunity. Although it is said everyone is equal in every way, that has not always been the case. Langston Hughes is a poet who tried to emphasize the idea of equality among all human beings. Hughes underlined the basis of the American Dream with what is and what should be in the societal era he lived in. In hindsight he believed his poems helped others realize the injustices that all minorities had to face during this era.

In my opinion they are two great poems that explain america and its society. the poems speak about american dreams. but have many differences like ones sad and the other is happy.

Hughes 's poem “Harlem” incorporates the use of similes to make a reader focus on the point Hughes is trying to make. In “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” Hughes shows how close he was to the rivers on a personal level. With those two main focuses highlighted throughout each poem, it creates an intriguing idea for a reader to comprehend. In these particular poems, Hughes’s use of an allusion, imagery, and symbolism in each poem paints a clear picture of what Hughes wants a reader to realize.
