Being the president, Jefferson had wanted the recently gained land to be explored to be aware of what it contained. As a result, the United States' government provide money to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark for exploration. This was known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition which had taken place from May 1804 to November 1805 when Lewis and Clark explored the territory. Stated by Heather LeBlanc, “Along the way they charted trails, mapped river and mountain ranges, collected samples and wrote descriptions of unfamiliar plants and animals, and recorded facts about the Native American tribes they encountered along their journey.” The discovery of these untapped resources allowed the Americans to make profit by selling them to other country’s that did not contain them.

Lewis and Clark were the exploring duo that made history in the exploration of America. With the help from their entourage, Sacagawea, and others they successful explored the land President Jefferson purchased known as the Louisiana Purchase. The territories of Louisiana offered more than just the new areas but a hope for ways around North America`s coast. Meriwether Lewis was an explorer and solider born August 18,1774 near Ivy, Virginia. He grew up on Locust Hill plantation neighboring Monticello where Jefferson lived.

LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 President Jefferson appointed his own private secretary Meriwether Lewis as Commander in charge to explore the unknown territory. Lewis then invited William Clark is former superior officer to be his Co-commander. They set out from Camp Dubois and were to explore the new territory, affirm the sovereignty of the US, find a water way to the Pacific, and establish trade with the Natives. Lewis and Clark commanded the Corps of Discovery which had 33 people, 26 being soldiers to include Sergeant Charles Floyd the only person to die on the expedition, one being Clark’s personal slave named York who would be given his freedom at the end of the expedition and one being Sacagawea

In 1803 the French sells the Louisiana territory to America, which nearly doubled the size of the land owned by the Unites States in America. The president at the time named Thomas Jefferson sends two explorers named Lewis and Clark to go check out the new land purchased in the Louisiana purchase. Lewis and Clark were mapping out the land and looking for a waterway connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, which would allow for better trade. They never found a water way but they did meet a woman named Sacagawea that was their saving grace. The Lewis and Clark expedition which took place between 1804 and 1806 is one of the most iconic events in American history. It was a journey of discovery, exploration, and scientific inquiry, and it helped to establish the United States claim to the Pacific Northwest. Led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the expedition was a remarkable achievement, and its impact on American society and culture. The expedition began in the spring of 1804 when Lewis and Clark along with a group of about forty men set out from St. Louis, Missouri on a mission to explore the western territories of the United States.

When I got the chance to research a famous deceased individual, I choose Sacagawea. From 1804-1806, the Corps of Discovery embarked on a journey that would take them through thick forests, across dangerously fast rivers, and up into the highest regions of the country. The most famous members, Lewis and Clark, led the expedition, along with the help of many others, including a Native American woman named Sacagawea. They scouted and mapped the area, taking notes and naming regions that would later be populated by thousands of pioneers that would immigrate into the area. Their efforts towards exploration proved successful and allowed the U.S. to gain detailed information of their newly acquired land. 1. Whiskey Rebellion: In western Pennsylvania, whiskey was very popular. In 1791, the federal government passed a tax on whiskey. The farmers refused to pay the tax, saying it was like the Stamp Act all over again. In 1794, people began to rebel/rioting and assaulting the tax collectors.

Members chosen for the expedition were sought after for skills that included hunting, blacksmithing, and gunsmithing, making United States Army soldiers a good option for crew who traveled by land, water and horseback, for nearly 8,000 miles over mountains, through plains and by rivers (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The success of the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to science, as they made important observations about the land of North America that lead to creation of maps with Captain Clark having the duty of mapping the landscape because of his experience: the result of maps made by Clark became one of the most important achievements of the western exploration. (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The scientific information collected on geography, meteorology, cultures, and animal life and plant life were greatly important to the nation (Corps of Discover, 2016). The trip also was partially useful in creating peaceful relations with the American Indians in territories of the Northwest, although not all tribes were accepting of the gestures, giving gifts was important to building peaceful relationships with the American Indians (The Corp of Discovery, 2016).

Thomas Jefferson’s Instructions to Meriwether Lewis discussed the appointment of Lewis as commander of the expedition, gave specific details of the purpose of the exploration, and provided directions for Lewis to follow when carrying out the trip. Thomas Jefferson carefully selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to be the commander of the Expedition and trusted that he would be able to perform the tasks assigned to him. Jefferson requested that an abundant amount of precise notes be taken and that they be protected at all costs. He was interested in learning about the people occupying the land, their culture, the ecosystems, and the land. Prior to the Purchase of the Louisiana Territory, Thomas Jefferson was desired to explore the area to see if there was an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean and claim that land for the United States. The main goals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was to map the region, collect information on new species, and to establish contact with the Native groups and make peace with them. In document 1, the map reveals that one goal of Lewis and Clark’s expedition was to find a waterway from the US to the Pacific Ocean. They did not find this route, but they did successfully navigate the Missouri River.
